I loved this first installment of the Mayfield Family series and can't wait to read more. I've read quite a bit from Josi S. Kilpack now and am never disappointed. Her books are well researched and well written, and the romance is always sweet. I highly recommend all of her work, but especially Promises and Primroses. 4 stars

I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange of an honest review.

A solid historical fiction. Veers into romance, but with a complicated storyline and developed characters, so it's not a super predictable romantic storyline.

Period Romance, clean; series starter, but stand alone read
Lovely heartfelt period romance. Peter and Julia's fall was gradual, sweet, and very beautiful. Honest hearts, hurts, worries, concerns, and two sweet girls along with a mother and Uncle who have a past made for a compelling, sweet read. Peter had to work through his past, his decision to not love again, as he fought his attraction for Julia. Amelia and Uncle Elliot, overcoming their misunderstandings to help remove yet another stumbling block for the young couple. As the roadblocks, emotions and hurts are healed, a lovely fall, two lovely romances come together. Strong characters, gorgeous setting, and well-deserved HEA made for a perfect read.

****I received a free copy of this book. My review and my responses are my own and honest, as always.****

I cannot believe I didn’t post a review of this book when I first read it.

It’s been a few months and what I remember was that I enjoyed it. Most of all I enjoyed the unexpected twist of two plots and two sets of main character and their stories intertwining.

I suppose I will simply have to read it again. I anticipate that as being a pleasant experience.

Hearts and history come together in this book as we are introduced to a new family and cast of characters from Kilpack! This is book one in a series and I already can’t wait for the next one. Proper Romance books are always a win-win for me!

This is book one and the beginning of Mayfield Family Series. and it looks like this will be a long one since we've been given heads up that Uncle Elliott has seven nieces and nephews he plans to marry off.

In this story however we have not just our main story of Peter and Julia but that of Uncle Elliott and Julia's mother, Amelia. I honestly loved both equally. All the characters were well written and very entertaining.

For an interesting, fun, sweet and clean romance lovers, this is a must read.

Josi S. Kilpack has written an enjoyable and engaging historical regency romance story in her novel Promises and Primroses. Written from the perspective of four different characters, this novel has a strong theme of budding, reuniting, and improving relationships. Kilpack knows her history for the Regency time period and does an excellent job of including this in her stories, as well as bringing to life her fabulous characters. The first in the Mayfield Family series, this is a fun and sweet romance that readers will be sure to love. Readers who have enjoyed Kilpack’s previous novels will surely adore this one as well.

This is a wonderful historical romance from Josi Kilpack! And a promise of a wonderful new regency romance series.
I loved the premise of the book. Lord Elliot Mayfield has dedicated his entire life to recover and improve the Mayfield wealth and to take care of his nephews and nieces. He’s ashamed of how the Mayfield name is associated to scandal because of his brother’s and sisters behavior. And he worries this new generation is headed toward the same end. That’s why he devices a marriage campain for his nephews and nieces in which in order to inherit they have to secure themselves a good match.
This book is about Peter’s story, Elliot’s eldest nephew and the only one married -and now widowed with two daughters- and the only one who has a straight and decent life yet... Peter is grieving and hasn’t overcome yet his wife’s passing. But he’s not interested in a new wife, he just needs a new governess...
And Julia Hollinghead is the perfect match for this job, except that she seems too young, and too pretty... Julie love’s being a governess, and she loves children, so this seems like the perfect job for her. And Peter seems to need a bit of help in more ways than one. Peter also dedicates his energy to dog breeding, and Julia seems to know about that too!
But things will not be easy for them, as Amelia, Julia’s mother, discovers Julia works for Elliot’s nephew. And Elliot is just the man who broke her heart and she can’t ever forgive...
I won’t give away more of the plot. I’ll just say it’s really engaging and it kept me hooked until the end!
The characters have a depth that I love, and there’s so much to learn behind their interactions.
I loved that Julia was strongminded and knew what she wanted. And she didn't let her mother rule her life.
The romance between them was really sweet.
And Amelia was hard to like at first, I felt like I wanted to shake her! ... but thankfuly she’ll get her redemption as well. Lord Elliot was one of my favorite characters, he’s a wonderful man.
This a story I vividly recommend! Sweet and clean, even funny at times!
Very enjoyable and satisfying! And I’m really looking forward to reading more of the Mayfield family and their possible matches.
A must read! Five stars!

REVIEW:

When Elliott tells Peter of his idea to help better his nieces and nephews, Peter isn’t 100% sold on it. He shrugs off the idea of himself needing help. He isn’t looking to get married and is already a respectable member of society. When Peter hires Julia to be a governess to his two daughters’ things seem to be going well. Well enough until Julia’s mother Amelia starts to make her opinions known. Peter is confident and headstrong. He likes to do things his own way, but it isn’t always the correct way to do things. That’s something he learns more than once in this story.

Amelia just wants Julia to say close to home, find a suitable husband and have children. However Julia has other plans. She wants more out of her life and more importantly, she wants to have some space from her semi-controlling but well-meaning mother; which is why she is looking for a new governess position. Julia loves her new position within the Mayfield household. And she adores Peters’ little girls and they adore her as well. How long can Julia's happiness last with her mother's interference?

Amelia is familiar with some members of the Mayfield family; especially Elliott Mayfield. Still recalling the pain from all those years ago and determined to not let history repeat itself when it comes to her daughter, Amelia attempts to take matters into her own hands. But can she judge the present clearly when she is still held firmly in the past?

I loved Julia. She is smart, independent (especially for the time period) and not afraid to be herself and say what she wants. Julia and Peter make a rather cute couple. I was rooting for them all the way. Amelia was the most frustrating character. There were several times I wanted to shake her and tell her stop being so ridiculous! Having this story told in multiple POV’s made it all the more entertaining to read. This was the first time I had read a book by Josi Kilpack and it will not be the last. The story was well written and it had a good steady pace to it. I very much enjoyed reading this book. Promises and Primroses made me fall back in love with historical romance all over again. It is a sweet story with traces of humor and warmth throughout. One that I hope you check out soon if you haven’t already.

RATING: 5 out of 5.

This was my first experience with a "proper romance." I've never read a romance before, but I thought I'd give it a try, especially since this genre has a HUGE following.

It was a sweet story. Because I'm not well-versed in this genre, I might be misunderstanding the recommended structure of the story. I felt that because of the shifting POV, there was no real mystery of everyone's behaviors. I would've liked a little more mystery there. For example, maybe hide why the mother doesn't like Elliot a little longer. Make the reader wonder what's happening instead of them being in-the-know before the characters. For me, that loses some of the magic.

Other than that, it was sweet, like I mentioned earlier. I liked seeing the evolution of the characters, and they did seem realistic.

Although, I have to say that if a man gave me 45 minutes notice for a dinner party I was expected to attend, even though he knew about it for DAYS beforehand, hello, red flag. That would kill my soul and probably any budding relationship. Ha! But that says more about me than anything else.

I actually have another book from this author on my bookshelf, and I look forward to reading more of her work.

I really enjoyed this book by one of my favorite authors. I loved the changing point of views and multiple story lines running at once. I feel thoroughly invested in these family members and hope that novels are written about the other nieces and nephews (particularly those who have made the biggest messes). Can't wait for more!

Loved it! The characters. The story line. Everything. 😊
Ms. Kilpack is a very talented author. I love reading her Proper Romances-this one did not disappoint!

I have mixed feelings about this story. I didn't have to force myself to finish it, but it also wasn't one I had to force myself to put down. I did feel like the ending picked up quite a bit.

The author switched POV between 4 main characters. For me, it made the story feel really disjointed, and I never really got attached to the characters. I do like a story told from a couple of different POV, but usually only 2 MAYBE 3. I also didn't really care for Amelia. Even when the story was told from her POV, I felt like she was being totally childish. If she had truly loved her husband like she said she did, she would have gotten over the hurt from the past. I think I would have liked the book a lot better if the story had focused on Julia and Peter and then had Amelia and Elliot with their own novella between books 1 and 2.

Having said all that, I will probably read the other books in the series when they come out. I will just be more likely to get them from the library than I will be to buy them.

Thanks to Net Galley and Shadow Mountain for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

I loved the premise of this book. What a great start to a series. I enjoyed seeing the characters evolve as thier relationship grew. I love the idea of a devious Uncle trying to find a way to ensure his nieces and nephews find a good partner in life.

Peter is a widower, and father of two daughters, he is also the heir of his uncle, Lord Elliott Mayfield. Lord Mayfield didn't want his nieces and nephews to repeat his martial mistakes so in order to claim his inheritance, Peter must make a good match.

Peter has no intention of marrying again, and has no need to to claim his inheritance portion, and has little to do with society. But he does need some help with his daughters, and would like to hire a nanny.

Julia Hollingsworth likes being a nanny, her new boss is handsome and a good involved father with his daughters. But her mother warns her against having affections for Peter, and disapproves of Julia working for him.

Julia is a hardworking and kind young woman, she has been through society and was unsuccessful in finding a husband, she just wants to make her own way in the world and is happy to do so. She was close to her father and knows about raising dogs, which is one of Peter's passions. Julia loves the girls and does her best to nurture and care for them in ways that recognizes their differences and talents. Leah and Marjorie adore her in return. Julia is competent and is proud of her independence.

Peter finds Julia entirely too beautiful and not strict enough, he can't seem to stop thinking about her. Meanwhile Julia can't figure out why her mother seems to be sabotaging her new job at every opportunity that she gets. Peter is an honorable man. He and Julia work together to care for the girls and his many dogs that he raises.

A bit slow to start, but it quickly picked up. I really enjoyed the story, as well as the many well done characters, great dialog, and adorable children. There is drama, and past secrets that threaten Julia and Peter's chance at a future, and overall a very enjoyable read.

If you are looking for historical romance, then check out this book because it combines all of the things I enjoy - dogs, romance, independent women (despite the times), and secrets.

I really love Julia. She is independent, knows what she wants, and isn't afraid to do what she wants after all it is her life! Her mother is her biggest stumbling block and many times I wanted to tell Amelia that she needed to get over the past and stop harboring a grudge. Yes, things didn't go your way but don't let it interfere with Julia's life.

Then there is Peter - very concerned with doing the right thing but putting himself last when he should put himself first since if he is happy then everyone is happy!

We can't forget Elliott - the bachelor uncle that just wants to see his nieces and nephews happy and married so he has set up some challenges for them and if they make an appropriate match they inherit something or will be gifted something special. Of course, Elliott never expects to meet his soul mate. I think these challenges are some peeks into future books and making this a series.

I was intrigued with the dog breeding because while I know has been happening for centuries, I never thought much about the topic until I read this book. I thought it was genius that Peter left Marjorie name one of his Dams (female) and she chose to name her Bumbleberry. There were many touching moments with the dogs throughout the book and even one tearjerker moment.

Overall I really enjoyed the flow of the book, the characters (good and bad), and the potential for future books with cameos by Elliott, Peter, Julia, and more.

I was so excited to find out that Josi Kilpack is undertaking a new historical romance series. Promises and Primroses is the first one in the series and it sounded so good I could hardly wait to read it!

Elliott Mayfield has spent his life trying to secure his family's fortunes and futures. He has decided to offer incentives to his nephews and nieces who improve themselves and make a respectable match, starting with his widowed nephew Peter. When he broaches the idea to Peter, however, he is turned down flat.

Peter is busy enough trying to distance himself from scandals that his family has brought upon him, take care of his estate, and care for his two young daughters. Marriage is the furthest thing from his mind. What he needs is a governess. When he goes to choose one at an agency, Julia Hollingsworth seems like the perfect fit. But she is young and beautiful and might prove to be a distraction. Through a series of events, Julia ends up being the governess and Peter must find a way to keep his feelings in check. He's happy enough with his life as it is. Or is he?

Julia loves being a governess and finds the perfect position with Peter Mayfield's family. Unfortunately her mother has a painful history with the Mayfield family and will do anything to force her daughter to resign her position and come home. But will a mother sacrifice her daughter's happiness over past hurt? Or can they all heal enough to truly let love bind up a broken heart?

I really loved Peter and Julia. There were so many cute moments from their first meeting to their first realization that they have a connection beyond employer/employee. They both had things to work through as they slowly came to be friends and then more. I loved how tender Peter could be and how much joy he found with Julia. Their romance has such a sweet push and pull to it, that readers will be spellbound. There was also a secondary romance as well, sort of a bonus, that I loved seeing resolved.

Another bonus is that Ms. Kilpack treats the readers to a well-imagined town and estate that helps the characters come alive and serve as an engaging backdrop to the romance. The strict society rules of the day are also observed and expertly woven into the story. For me, those things are essential to a good historical romance and Ms. Kilpack does not disappoint.

I loved the characters in this historical romance - there was a lot of emotion written here and it was so lovely. Julia was such a wonderful character and I loved Peter's children and dogs and the entire set-up. It was just such a fun and delightful read.

Peter Mayfield is determined to keep himself and his daughters far from any hint of a scandal. He’s grown up in the shadow of one and does not wish the same for his girls. Thus, when he conducts interviews while searching for a governess, he steers clear of the young and pretty Julia Hollingsworth. When circumstances bring the two back together, and Julia’s gentle ways with his daughters—and his dogs—moves Peter.

Josi S. Kilpack writes what I consider middle-upper class regency—just a step down from he nobility. Her characters have large homes but also need a trade to support themselves. They still attend and host dinner parties, they have a wide circle of peers, and they have employees (just not tenants).

Julia’s tenderheartedness toward the girls and the puppies, as well as her desire to bring as little pain to Peter as possible, make her an extremely likable character. And Peter’s desire to live an upright life—to the point of foregoing what he wants most—is commendable. The two are a good fit for each other, but Julia’s mom has another agenda.

A pleasant and pleasurable story that looks at the simple and natural process of love burgeoning from admiration and the future that opens up when forgiveness is extended, Promises and Primroses is another winner from Kilpack.

This is a book I finished with a sigh and satisfied smile. Isn't that the best feeling? The premise of the book and series with Lord Elliot's marriage campaign is unique and intriguing, and I'm looking forward to the books that are sure to follow. This first book focused not only on the oldest nephew, Peter, but also explored the history of Lord Elliot's past relationship with Peter's governess's mother. The four-person point of view wasn't overwhelming at all, but seamlessly woven together in a lovely balance as each character worked through their issues. I especially loved Julia and her selfless service for Peter and his children, even though she doesn't have a need for employment. The slowly blossoming romance between her and Peter was oh-so-good and despite the conflicting family dynamics, they are able to find their way to a happily-ever after. Such a wonderful Regency romance with depth and the promise of more to come!
