Hilda lives in the woods with her mom. She has a cozy little life, but is surprised when she meets some not-so-mythical creatures and learns lessons about home, friendship, and nature. This absolutely became a favorite series and one of the best books of 2020 because the stories and illustrations are so charming and...woodsy, it's like taking a fairytale hike. I dislike that this is advertised as "based on the Netflix series" when Hilda was around first, it should be the other way around, but essentially this is somewhat of a "retelling" of the original comics and what became the first two episodes of the Netflix show. I still need to get the other copies to make comparisons, but overall, I read this without watching the show or having read Luke Pearson before and I fell in love!

Note: I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley. I was not compensated in any other fashion for the review and the opinions reflected below are entirely my own. Special thanks to the publisher and author for providing the copy.

"Meet Hilda: explorer, adventurer, avid sketchbook-keeper and friend to almost every creature in the valley! Join our beloved heroine as she encounters her very first troll, negotiates peace with some very persnickety elves, and reunites two lovelorn ancient giants"
Set in a Forrest with trolls, and giants. Loved the Netflix tie in! awesome little quick read.

I am unfamiliar with the Netflix series, but Pearson made me fall in love with Hilda and her magical world.

This fantastic chapter book closely follows the Hilda graphic novels, opening up the story to be read in a different way. The reading level is perfect for those who are beginning to gain confidence with their reading, but for whom middle grade novels are still too much. As a librarian and parent, I *love* to have more quality books to offer kids in this K-2 reading range, especially if the material is as compelling as Hilda! The spunky heroine has appeal for boys and girls, and the message of trying to understand others' motives and perspectives is well done.

I had read the comics (love them!) and seen an early screening of the first two episodes of the TV show (so cute!) so this book was pretty repetitive for me personally, but it will be a great jumping on point for new fans.

This is a cute middle grade story.

Hilda and her mom are going to be kicked out of their house by the invisible elves that live in front of it. The elves can become visible if you sign a form to see them (the elves love forms). Hilda must travel to see the elf Prime Minister and elf king to save her home.

Hilda learns a lot about her homeland throughout the story. It is a land with elves and giants shaped like mountains. There are also trolls that can be scared off by bells. But Hilda realizes that the land doesn’t belong to her and her mom, since they built on top of someone else’s home.

This series is becoming a Netflix show, and I’m curious to watch it. This is the start of a book series that will be continuing next year. I look forward to following Hilda’s story.

Hilda is such an inspiring adventurer! Cute early-middle grade story. the story is fast-paced and engaging, and there are lots of fabulous nods to all kinds of folk creatures. Quick, sweet read.

Graphic novel, female protagonist who is clever and brave, adventure and laughs...what more could you want?
This was my first exposure to Hilda, even though Luke Pearson created Hilda back in 2010. There have been several Hilda comic books since then, and the series is going to be a Netflix show this fall! Hilda and the Hidden People is actually a graphic novelization based on the Netflix series that's based on the original comic books...
Anyway, Hilda's awesome - I mean, she escapes from a troll in the second chapter. She isn't messing around, people. And she has all kinds of fabulous adventures. If your girls (kids) love graphic novels, they'll love this, and if they're not sure, this is a great place to start. This one's actually extra fun, too, because it's for a slightly younger crowd - perfect for your 7-10 year olds. Two thumbs up!

I absolutely adore Hilda and her world and could not be more excited about the Netflix adaptation of the graphic novels and these transitional chapter book tie-ins!! I was nervous about this chapter book adaptation because the graphic novels are so vivid and wonderful, but this book does justice to its source material. It's very descriptive and the illustrations add some of the imagination that is readily available in the GN format. I love it. It would make for a great chapter book to read aloud as a family. I'm excited for more!

Hilda has been seen in graphic novels and now in a Netflix show, so her story is also appearing in tie-in chapter books. In this first title, Hilda is a curious blue-haired girl who decides to go out into the countryside and sketch pictures of rocks. But she spends the day hiking around and drawing different rock formations. Then she comes across one that she is sure is actually a troll turned to stone in the sunlight. On her way home, she comes across the footprints of a giant. There are already forest giants that Hilda knows about, but this track is much larger than anything they could make. She and her mother also have problems with elves. It seems that their house is in the territory of the elves who have now ordered the humans to leave, or else. Mom is determined to move to the town of Trolberg away from all the odd happenings and Hilda is just as determined to stay in the wild place she loves.

Luke Pearson's illustrations capture the wide-eyed inquisitive nature of Hilda. Her artistic tendencies come through in her chic clothing (skirt, tights, boots, beret), as well as in her choice of leisure-time fun. The world Hilda lives in contains normal things like a home and a mother, but also odd creatures like giants, a wooden men, and trolls. She seems to take all her adventures in stride rather well. As she says, "What a noteworthy day." The color palette used for the book contrasts warm golden tones for the daylight and indoor scenes with blues and grays to capture the dreariness of rainy nights. The difference in the two settings emphasizes the cosyness one can bask in at such times.

I had never heard of Hilda before, but after reading this I’m excited to recommend it to my students and see the Netflix series! I loved how detailed and well thought out the illustrations were in the book, and the overall feel that we were taken back to a time and place entirely different that we will ever know. Hilda was easy to root for, and I loved her feistiness! Thank you, NetGalley for the ARC!

This was so freakin cute! First of all, I would die for Twig. Also, i want a deer fox and I want one now. But I guess that's beside the point. This was a really cute story mostly about how humans kinda suck. At least that's what I took from it. Highly recommend to adults that like MG books. And to basically all kids and tweens. Hilda is fun, and brave, and kind. I seriously cannot wait for the Netflix show!

The anticipation for the release of Hilda on Netflix is palpable and as a deeply devoted Hilda fan family, we are loving the new installment of this chapter book that deepens the story and adventures.

I originally thought this might be a new Hilda book and was REALLY excited, but it's a redo of the current GN/Picture books that are already available. I'm not sure if more art is going to be added, but this newest version of the series really suffers without it. Check out the original books first. Those were all 4-5 star reads for me.

I have been following Hilda's adventures for some time and was unsurprisingly happy to join her again.

It never cease to amaze me how eager she so to simply jump into a new adventure and with how much kindness she takes on challenges. It is always a pleasure to recommend her stories to young girl who simply aren't girly and want to have a character to look up too.

Just the absolute best. I love the Hilda comics. Retelling in this way is such a fun connection to bridge the gap between comics fans and traditional prose readers. This book is so fun and Hilda is such an inspiring adventurer!

Hilda lives with her mom and her pet Twig. With the threat of eviction from mysterious beings, she embarks on and adventure filled with wondrous creatures and imparts a simple message about belonging and contentment.
The story has its moments, but when I shared this to my 3rd grade-daughter, it didn’t keep her interest. The artwork is lovely, but the story doesn’t quite deliver.

Hilda is a nice quirky character that's fun to read about. She loves living in the woods but that is about to change.

Flying Eye Books and Net Galley let me read this book for review (thank you). It will be published September 4th.

These graphic novels are fun to read because of the great graphics and odd looking characters. Add Hilda and her idiosyncrasies and how could you not have fun reading it?

Hilda discovers their house is in the middle of an elf village. Humans can't see them so they are being asked to move. Hilda works on changing that directive and meets two Ancient giants along the way.

All appears to be going well until the end. Looks like Hilda will have to make a change anyway...

A whimsical story about an adventurous
and curious young girl, Hilda and the Hidden People features an assortment of magical creature and a surprising amount of paperwork.

When Hilda and her mother are faced with tiny eviction notices and beseiged by even smaller projectiles, Hilda, afraid of having to move away from her childhood home, signs a contract with an elf and discovers a previously-invisible world of creatures all around her. Determined to stop the eviction, Hilda's strengths come from her desire to learn about the world. She uses that knowledge to see things from a different perspective, and even as her mother prepares to move to the nearby city, Hilda refuses to give up. With a determination that borders on stubbornness, Hilda teams up with an elf in order to save her home.

Hilda and the Hidden People moves along at a lightning pace, with new characters and creatures in almost every chapter. The setting and characters give the story an almost folklorish feel, as does the artwork, and the result is a quirky, fun, and silly story about a girl who never gives up and is always ready learn and see the world in a new way.
