Whimsical and intriguing... the best way I can describe comic book artist, Luke Pearson's illustrated "mini novel". Upon receiving this ARC, I discovered the series started in 2010 with Hildafolk (book 1) and it will soon become a Netflix series.
The artwork is endearing, and adds to the charm of this unique world of giants, elves, and quirky woodland creatures. Hilda is a nature-loving explorer that does whatever it takes to protect life in the valley... even when it means embarking on tricky quests. When she becomes ensnarled in a conflict with the elves, she refuses to accept their decision to force her into the city. I loved Hilda's feistiness. She's brave and wants to solve the problem: How can all these different species live together in harmony? I believe it was Pearson's intention for this to spark deeper conversations about empathy, community and indigenous people. Hilda realizes she has been ignorant about who she is sharing the valley with, and strives to make it right.
I think this series has a place in school libraries... kids who enjoy fantasy- but have not built up the stamina for a 200+ page novel, will enjoy this compact book that doesn't skimp on heart. Its quirky voice makes it fun to read, and there is a nice balance between quippy banter and suspense.
Why did I love Wood Man so much?? His crotchety demeanour made me laugh out loud- I wanted to hear more from him! Glad he is an established character as Hilda's neighbour. When Hilda shows up unannounced to borrow a book from him, you really get the sense he is the epitome of a hermit.
"Have you finished?"
"Finished what?"
"Reading. Talking. Being in my house."
It makes me want to start from the beginning so I can see how this unusual friendship has evolved.
The reason for the deduction of a star was because my attention wandered somewhere in the middle. Part of me wonders if this was simply because some of the magic was lost in reading it digitally.
