This was a great summer read! I got completely pulled into the story and I finished it in a day.

I really loved Sarah as a protagonist; I’m a sucker for a story with a female scientist, and Sarah is a high-ranking researcher for NASA who weaves her knowledge of astronomy into how she processes everything in her day-to-day life. Sarah’s way of thinking was engaging, and the story touched on her struggles as a woman in a STEM field; she feel underestimated based on her gender. Later on in the story, she also struggles with potential problems in her career due to the controversy and news coverage regarding her husband.

Overall, Sarah’s identity as a scientist worked really well, but there were a few passages that fell really flat for me. Meserve has a few lapses where really common knowledge seems to be presented as Sarah’s specialized knowledge from her work at NASA. For example, I don’t think any readers needed the protagonist to explain to us that moonlight is simply reflected sunlight. Conversely, passages such as the one that worked into the story the difference between a constellation vs. an asterism felt a lot more valuable and natural.

I do have to say that the mystery in this novel felt just a bit too heavy-handed on the foreshadowing and predictable to me. I was able to put the pieces together faster than the protagonist; however, this didn’t seem to be as much as a detriment to the story as it could have been. Meserve was able to get me invested enough in the characters that I felt content to watch Sarah work through the mystery after the conclusion felt relatively obvious.

This was fun, fast-paced story which blended mystery, suspense, and just a touch of romance. A great beach read for this summer.

Fun, fast paced mystery. If I hadn’t started this book so late in the day I would have read it in one sitting. This author is easy to read...the dialogue flows and feels so real. As is always true in any book that I enjoy I had the opportunity to learn something new and this time it was learning a bit more about our planets and the stars. About 65% of the way in I figured out the mystery; or at least I figured out much of it. I wonder if that was planned by the author as part of the reader’s journey. I’m not a big mystery genre reader. For those who are I am curious as to when you think a reader should be able to piece it together and solve the mystery? I felt I knew what I needed to know a bit too early in this book and therefore the last third of the book wasn’t as engaging as the rest. However I truly enjoyed the writing and have already downloaded one of the authors earlier books.

Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with an early release of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I found myself reading this book in one night as my interest level was peaked by the suspense of Ben the missing husband and the information about astronomy coming from the wife Sara a astronomy professor. Sara comes home late from a 3 day scientific conference only to find her teenage son alone in the house and her husband Ben missing. The next day there is still no response to her texts to Ben and the police become involved. A lot of things led up to evidence that either Ben, Sara or both are hiding something? Who killed a young woman that Ben was doing business with? Why did Ben take out a big life insurance policy and forward 1 million dollars into Sara's bank account? As the FBI and the police investigate everything about Sara and her son she is in a race against time to prove that Ben is alive and innocent. A very interesting novel with a good ending.

THE SPACE BETWEEN by Dete Meserve is fast-paced, suspenseful story with lots of twists and turns that kept me riveted from beginning to end. Astronomer Sarah Mayfield returns home from a career-defining business trip to find that her husband Ben appears to be missing. Nothing seems to add up as she and son Zack try to piece together the disturbing evidence being revealed as the investigation into his disappearance proceeds. As with her scientific endeavors, Sarah realizes that things may not be as they seem and she must look beyond the obvious if she wants to learn what happened to Ben. She begins to question who she can really trust to help her. The vivid descriptions of the beauty and mystery of the stars and the space between them created the perfect backdrop to this intriguing story. I could not put this book down! I highly recommend THE SPACE BETWEEN and look forward to reading more from Dete Meserve. Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the chance to read an early copy.

"Things aren't always exactly as they appear to be." This quote from the novel should be kept in mind by everyone who is reading this. It is a wonderful book filled with intrigue, mystery, suspense, tension and romance.
Many questions may come to mind as one reads it, but there are no answers until the end.
A married couple growing apart eventually become reconciled as they confront together all the bewildering happenings they meet. The plot may seem confusing at times, but it is never uninteresting.
Another line from the book tells, solutions are usually there in plain sight but we fail to see them. So many times that is the way it is in life. So let's keep our eyes open!
Excellent book! Well written!

I received this book from #netgalley for an honest review. Dete Meserve is a great writer and this book is just more proof! When Sarah comes home from out of town from her job, after making a big scientific discovery, she also discovers her husband is missing.
Not only is Ben missing but he is also presumed dead and Sarah is the main suspect! Of course nothing is what it seems, and at every turn there seems to be more odds stacked up against her. Their son Zach , who also holds a few secrets of his own, is no help either in the whereabouts of Ben. What is the real truth and who is the real culprit?
I like the way this story was written with the tie in of astronomy and romance, with lots of suspense!
A quick enjoyable read for everyone!

SCINTILLATING!!

The Space Between by Dete Meserve is scintillating!! The author paints the entire story with the most beautiful imagery that will mesmerize you from cover to cover. The characters are complex and realistic. The plot is dynamic! This is a microscopic look at one couple’s life (one family’s life) and the space between them. What do you really know about your spouse? What if circumstantial evidence led him to be the lead suspect in a murder suspect in the death of woman he was involved in through business? There are so many deep insights included within the pages that make you start paying attention to things that are hidden in plain sight, things aren’t always as they seem and the space between. Great Beach Read! I was provided an ARC of this book by Lake Union Publishing and NetGalley. The opinions expressed here are completely my own and without influence. I also have preordered a copy of this book for my own personal collection.

I love the epigraph at the beginning of this book.... "Silently one by one, In the meadows of heaven, Blossomed the lovely stars, The forget-me-nots of the angels. ---Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. What happens when you think you know the person you're married to but then something takes place and questions arise and doubts set in? This is a fantastic book with mystery and suspense. I was pulled into this story like a meteor into the gravity of earth and didn't want to escape. I love the character of Sarah and her determination to find out what happened to her husband, Ben. What the police and FBI were saying about him was nothing like the man she knows. He surely wouldn't have done the thing they are saying he did . She knows what the evidence right in front of her says but it's just not making sense. Sarah's logic comes from her astronomical expertise. "Most things are not as they appear." "So many of the most remarkable discoveries are made when we look past the obvious, when we find ways around being blinded by light, and when we discover new ways to see in the dark." I really appreciate the research and how Dete Meserve incorporated astrology into this story. I learned so much. I am fascinated by what's in the sky and beyond what we know so having that as an aspect in the story was great. This is a fantastic read and I highly recommend this book. It's worth 5 stars and the galaxy they're in! TY Lake Union for the opportunity to read this wonderful book and to Dete Meserve for sharing it with us!

I love a mystery where you cannot predict the outcome and this book did that! There were so many surprises along with the suspense of what happened to Ben that I did not want to put this book down because I NEEDED to know how it was going to end! One of the things I enjoyed the most was that the two main characters, married couple Sarah and Ben, were relatable- married for 15 years, they had lost the spark that brought them together in the first place. By all appearances, they appeared to have the perfect life, but while they were both successful in their careers, they not only were struggling with their marriage, but they were also having issues, behaviorally, with their son, Zack. I also enjoyed how the author sprinkled in flashbacks to how Sarah and Ben met so you could get a sense of who they used to be as a couple. I received an ARC via NetGalley - my opinions are my own.

Wow! This book grabbed me from the very first page. I was walking around the house reading it when ever I could. I really liked Sarah and Ben’s characters. I had a couple suspicions along the way but they didn’t pan out. Great book! I highly recommend this if you like a good thriller/mystery and throw in a second chance.
I obtained the book through NetGalley and this review is in my own words.

The Space Between by Dete Meserve is an outstanding, out-of-this-world work of art! This book starts off with a bang and never slows down. Main character, Sarah, is an astronomer who returns home from a conference to find that her husband is missing and that security system footage of their home has been erased. Working with a colleague, she is able to recover snippets of footage that lead her to wonder just what kind of dealings her husband was involved in. This book will keep the reader guessing as to each character’s motivation and intentions. This one is not to be missed!

If you want a book that will keep you up all night, because you can't put it down then this book is for you. A suspenseful, sitting on the edge of your seat is definitely how I would describe this wonderful book about a woman who comes home from a business trip only to find her husband missing. With the discussion of divorce before she left on her trip, did her husband decide to leave on his own or was there something much deeper going on? I was hanging on to every page up til the last page! I highly recommend this book! This is my first book by this author, but it definitely won't be my last!!!

Significant clues are often hidden "in plain sight." Astronomer Sarah returns from a business trip where she presented an important scientific discovery, only to discover her teenager home alone and her ambitious restauranteur husband missing. What follows is some evidence tampering on her part -- intentional and unintentional -- as she seeks to find her husband and find out whether he actually is guilty of the murder he's been accused of committing.
The suspense builds, with intruders, secret codes, and plenty of evidence that Sarah herself is not blameless when it comes to problems in her marriage to Ben. Who can be trusted?
A well-crafted thriller; I didn't want to stop reading! (Netgalley review)

I don’t usually binge read, but found myself having to reprimand myself, to not neglect other responsibilities, and tear myself away . The Space Between by Dete Meserve is a very good book, from start to finish. A gripping mystery, that had me trying to put the pieces together. But the beauty of the accompanying story of Sarah’s astronomy background, grounded her and the panic that she felt, unbelieving that her husband Ben could be dead or was a murderer. It allowed her to process events in a clinical way, showing much more stability than the investigators in the case. It also shared with the reader, the mystery and beauty of the unknown, that is our universe.
I enjoyed the various players, Zach the typical kid, Aaron, her computer genius co worker, her bossy sister Rachael, Kate the TV reporter, who all contributed to the weave of the story.
It’s probably the best mystery that I have read for awhile, had me turning pages into the wee hours. My thanks to Net Galley, Lake Union Publishers, for the opportunity to review this wonderful novel. I hope my review reflects how much I enjoyed it.

This was an excellent read that captured my attention immediately and never let me go until the end. There was obviously a lot of research put into this book by the author as some of the astronomy information was not something most of us know or have heard of. I love reading books that not only have a good story, but also impart information I wasn't aware of before.

The characters were so full of life, well rounded and real that if one had spoken to me I wouldn't have been surprised. Even though Sarah felt her marriage with Ben was troubled, she never quit believing in him and trying to figure out what happened. I wanted to cheer for her!

This is a wonderful, suspenseful and captivating thrill ride of a story and I'd recommend it wholeheartedly.

WOW this book was so good! It is a mystery and if you think it is one of those books that you will have figured out in chapter 5,6 or 7 you are wrong. I of course started reading this at bedtime, my husband rolled over and asked if I planned to get any sleep that night because it was already 3 a.m. I couldn’t stop reading because I needed to find out what was next. This book had mystery, suspense a good bit about space, and a strong female lead. This honestly was one of the best books I’ve read this year.
