I’m not quite sure what to make of this book. The refrain running through it is “Is this fiction?” and to be honest I’m not sure whether the author wants us to think it is or isn’t. There’s a website associated with the book on which readers are invited to become part of the action by choosing certain developments by uploading their views and becoming part of the movement – called Ovid House. The book is fiction only if we allow it to remain so. Or we can turn the fiction into a new world in which every citizen will be able to vote in the House of Representatives. (It’s an American book). In the novel Eric Rane is the author of a book about a new America in which the citizens walk to the capital petitioning for an amendment to the constitution making every single one of them a member of the House of Representatives. The novel follows a group of characters working to turn the Ovid House movement into reality, and Eric reluctantly becomes the figurehead. As an exploration of grassroots political movements and the ability of ordinary people to effect political change, I felt the book had some interesting things to say. But I remain confused about whether the author’s intention is for the book to become a blueprint for people power. I look forward to reading more reviews to perhaps clarify my thoughts.
