A Curve in the Road by Julianne MacLean

Brief Summary: Abbey is a successful surgeon married to another doctor with a teenage son when she is hit by a drunk driver. This accident changes her life by bringing secrets out and causing her nightmares. This is my first novel by Julianne MacLean and it is hard to review without spoilers.

Highlights: This is an engaging, quick, and easy read that I finished in two days. It is especially hard to put down before the secrets come out. At times it was very predictable and reminded me of a Lifetime Movie. Other times, I was surprised by the twists and turns. I also really liked the dog Winston! This is a great book for dog-lovers!

What makes this book unique? For me, I couldn’t remember another novel about this kind of complicated grief that left me feeling hopeful for the main character in the end.

Explanation of Rating: 4/5: I was easily sucked in and enjoyed the book. I will absolutely be looking to read more by this author!

I just spent yesterday reading A Curve in the Road. I felt like I was on an emotional roller coaster. Our main character, Abbie is hurt in a car accident. Her husband dies. Secrets are uncovered. Abbie has been betrayed. So many twists and turns in this story.

Not only a curve in the road, this book throws one curve after another at you from the beginning to the end. This story will grab you from the first page and hold on tight until the end. This book is full of emotional surprises ... and it is a realistic trip through Abbie MacIntyre's life via the book's pages. You will wonder how much more Abbie can take, but the twists and turns keep coming.

An easy read but not boring. I love having the opportunity to read a good book without bad language and sex scenes. Just a good story!

Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for my honest opinions. I will definitely be buying all of Julianne MacLean's books!

A CURVE IN THE ROAD by Julianne MacLean. I have been a fan of Ms. MacLean for a while, and have enjoyed many of her tales. This one, however, didn't quite live up to the others. It tells the story of a woman involved in an accident, her husband passes and she then discovers his infidelity. There was great promise for this story but I found the story to move a bit too slow and my emotions were never truly invested. It was just an ok read for me, but I am still a fan and look forward to future books by Ms. MacLean. (received ARC from NetGalley for honest review)

A Curve in the Road was a superb novel about grief, betrayal, courage and love.

As Abbie gets into a tragic accident that surprisingly involves her own husband, Alan, driving under the influence and nearly killing her, his death uncovers secrets that lead to the realization that she didn’t have the perfect marriage like she thought she did.

While Abbie is trying to deal with the grief over losing Alan and wondering why he was driving drunk, a characteristic so unlike her devoted and loving husband, a mysterious woman calls his cell phone in which Abbie’s answers and sees this woman at Alan’s funeral.

Abbie goes on to find out why this woman, Paula, shows up into her life suddenly and uncovers the truth about her husband who led a double life resulting from a troubled childhood that made him vulnerable in times of potential loss.

While Abbie is wrestling between feelings of grief, anger, hurt and worry, she experiences hallucinations and is diagnosed with narcolepsy because of the accident.

This book brilliantly brought together the lives of Abbie, the handsome and interested veterinarian, Nathan, her son, Zack and her by weaving the presence of Winston, the ever-loving golden retriever who brings together all these people’s lives. Winston’s intuitive actions as many pet-owners can vouch for, helps Abbie wake up from her hallucinations and empathizes her emotions from her narcoleptic episodes. He silently is the loyal friend who helps guide Abbie through the roller coaster of emotions and stabilizes her new life as a widow.

The author placed enough detail that satisfied reading fix and I loved how Abbie didn’t have to feel like she completely forgave her cheating late husband. Because she is human, forgiveness can take a long time to prevail and I liked that Abbie wasn’t made out to be this perfect person that she calmly presented in the face of an ordeal.

A realistic story that although you may not have ever faced in your life, Maclean has seen to it that you felt the anguish, realization and happiness that Abbie endured in an effective manner.

Wow! The story starts with a big twist and then continues to make you think about the consequences of actions. Abbie is an amazing woman. I don't want to reveal too many details in the review as I think it may take away from your reactions to the story. Abbie unexpectedly has her life change in a single moment. The story takes us on her journey as she deals with unexpected loss, grief and change. The book carries us through a roller coaster of emotions and leaves us on a positive note. The overall message felt hopeful and reaffirms that we can not only survive but overcome life's unexpected events. As with other stories by Julianne MacLean, I always leave with a sense of feeling good. I received an advance copy in return for an honest review.

“A Curve in the Road” by Julianne MacLean was an emotional read! I won’t reveal anything more than you learn from the synopsis, because I don’t want to spoil any surprises for other readers. The main character in the book Abbie was going through the real emotional roller-coaster and it was easy for me to become engaged in her story from the first page. I literally couldn’t put the book down, I just needed to know how she would handle difficult situations life put her in. Abbie was a very likable character, I cheered her on and hoped for the best HEA for her. The ending felt satisfying and wasn’t overly sentimental. The novel was filled with tragic events and hard decisions, but it was also full of supportive, compassionate people and human goodness.

I haven’t read any other book by Julianne MacLean before this one, but I enjoyed it so much, that I am definitely going to check out her other novels. I think that this author is very skilled in showing an emotional whirlwind that happens after an unexpected event or a tragedy.

If you are looking for an engaging read that will affect you emotionally, look no further. Also if you are going through a rough patch it can help you feel that you are not alone.

I received “A Curve in the Road” from the publisher via NetGalley. I would like to thank the author and the publisher for providing me with the advance reader copy of the book.

I really wanted to love this book and thought that I would., but it flip-flopped between being too slow and too unbelievable for me to truly enjoy it. And to be truly honest, the only character that I truly liked, enjoyed, and was invested in was Winston - her dog! Wait, that's not true, I also liked Nathan!

I'm not sure if it was the writing style that didn't always flow right for me, the slim chances of the events even occurring (yes, I realize this is fiction), or the over-done focus on her son. I almost stopped reading when the accident occurred, just because I'm such a crazy dog person and it tore me apart. I'm glad I didn't give up there, but something about it just wasn't right for me.

However, I have noticed that this novel has many more positive reviews than negative, so based on the whole premise of the novel, I would still recommend it.

I loved this book. Even though the blurb/advertisement for the story gives the major plot line you can't help wondering what can happen next to Abbie and her seventeen year old son, Zack. I found Abbie's concern for both Zack and her dog Winston was heartbreaking and who would have thought a dog could be the character that could change the direction of the book so quickly. I think that's what drew me to the cast. This is the first book by Julianne MacLean I've read but it will not be the last. She is Canadian and this book is set in Nova Scotia. Loved watching the year of growth in this family and hope that Zack can get a book of his own in the future. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.

A CURVE IN THE ROAD by Julianne MacLean is an incredible emotional journey. This is my first book by Ms. MacLean but I will be looking for others! I stayed up until 5am this morning to finish the book, I just couldn't put it down! Absolutely one of the best stories I've read this year!

I flew through the beginnings of the book thinking there was going to be more mystery involved, but was just as pleased to find a solid contemporary fiction about betrayal, love and forgiveness. All of the characters in this book tugged a piece of your heart when turning pages. I will continue to seek out this authors work.
