Rosie's Glasses
by Dave Whamond
Kids Can Press
Children's Fiction

I received this ebook in an exchange for an honest review. I thank Netgalley, the author and publisher.

Rosie wakes up in a bad mood. She is not happy for some reason.

Part of the book is done in black and white, giving it a grayish gloomy feeling. Rosie has a black cloud over her head.

Different things happen at school and Rosie is still unhappy.

ON the walk home Rosie sees a lovely colorful butterfly. She follows it and finds a pair of glasses.

When she tries them on she discovers that what she sees through the lenses is colorful, vivid and pretty.

Are the glasses magical??

People are smiling and Rosie is too, with the glasses on.

This book was done in all illustrations and no words.

I reviewed this book for Kids Can Press. Pictures only, this book shows how your attitude can change your mood. Would be great to show kids in a small group and then discuss to develop a strategy that may help them with their metacognition and self-talk.

I read this with my youngest. The graphic contrast was fun to see as a young girl goes from having a horrible day to seeing everything through rose-colored glasses, then finally realizes she doesn't actually need the glasses to see the good things around her. A fun read and a chance to chat with my little one about our attitude and perception.

There are not many stories that say so much in so few words – or in this case, in none at all. This wordless picture book truly gives meaning to the phrase “a picture is worth a thousand words”.

Rosie wakes up one morning with a dark cloud above her head, which follows her everywhere she goes. She sees the world in joyless shades of grey… that is, until she finds an unusual pair of glasses, which allow her to see everything in colour. Finally she’s able to appreciate the wonder all around her.

There are so many details that you could easily miss on the first or second “read”, such as the sad little hamster in the school classroom and the fact that Rosie actually sees a colourful butterfly before she puts the glasses on, suggesting that the glasses are in fact a metaphor for a more positive frame of mind.

The intentionally dull (yet nevertheless stunning!) illustrations evoke feelings of sadness, which turn to joy with beautiful explosions of colour as Rosie allows happiness into her life. The ending is hugely satisfying, but I won’t give that away!

This book was so lovely. It was bright, and happy and optimistic (as I'm sure most of you guessed from the title).
I loved the view through Rosie's Glasses. It reminded me of being a child, and how on a good day everything seemed so bright and magical.

This book is a true picture book, using only the illustrations to tell the story. It starts with Rosie walking around in her day and life with a gray cloud above her head, seeing everything in black and white. Until one day she sees a colorful butterfly and finds these colorful glasses, when she puts them she sees a whole new colorful world. This is a great book with very detailed and beautiful illustrations.

How much greener the grass is, with this rose-tinted glasses.

This is a wonderful, wordless book that says so much.

I think I've known sadness since very young. From the age of four I've lost people close to me, and it affected me so much. I could never understand why other children always seemed so happy.

Rosie is a depressed and sad little girl. She cannot control the state of her room. and her parents seem disconnected. Her parents are burnt out and ignore her - something many children in the modern world experience with busy parents.

This book highlights that it's not just Rosie and her family that experiences the blues - it's everyone.

This comic reminds me of Pink Floyd's "The Wall" - where children line up for school like a slaughterhouse. This is much deeper and much darker than all the children books I've ever read, but not so dark that it was disturb children.

I love that the depressing and melancholic part of the book is in back and white, while the wonderful part begins in colour.

But one day, Rosy finds glasses - coloured glasses, surrounded by butterflies - and so she begins to see the world in rose-tinted glasses.

I absolutely love how her glasses are used! And so, Rosy becomes happy! And so, Rosie gets a job - a job to make others happy. And so, her room from the beginning changes.

The etire book is a message of our depressed, sad selves and how we could be so much different if only we introduced some positivity and step-by-step improvement.

And then - well then she loses her glasses! But she realises why she ever needed them. I think that the glasses many represent anything - drugs, anti-depressants, obsessive gaming or anything that makes us happy. We just need to realise we don't need it once we've used it as a crutch we need to move on and be happy ourselves

The illustrations are cute, quickly and so appealing.

And I love the ending! This is a profound book for all ages. It teaches you that you just don't need glasses to see the good in things, because they actually exist.

Conclusion
I love picture books without words. Why? Well, it allows you to be the co-author of the story and it see it as you wish to. And that's what I've seen with a lot of reviews of this book - everyone takes a different branch of the same message to heart. Definitely recommended for everyone - not only children.

No words, and yet you quickly get that this is not a good day, as Rosie wakes up with a cloud over her head and it all goes downhill from there.

But, then, she finds some rose colored glasses, and her view of the world changes. What was one gray,

is now bright and colorful. Birds sing, people smile, there are musicians.

But the good news is the world does not revert back, when she loses the glasses. It is still bright and sunny, when her dog and family join her in the park.

Kids should have fun looking at before an after pictures of her black and white world and her rosie world.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.

Rosie's life is dull and colorless until she finds a pair of glasses. When she puts them on, her world comes alive with color and joy and excitement. Suddenly, her world and everyone around her is brimming with life. What a wonderful pair of glasses, right? But when she loses them, she still sees the joy in her life.

A great example of how a wordless picture book can deliver a simple, yet strong message: Life may be full of ups and downs, but it is how we approach life that can make all the difference. So, put your happy glasses on and embrace the day!

Rosie’s glasses is a sweet wordless book about what happens when you look at things through different lenses. I really love the theme and illustrations and will be adding it to my library must buy list!

I loved the lack of color and then burst of color. It would be great for a read aloud with discussions.

Rosie’s Glasses is a delightful, wordless book about changing the way we see the world. Children will love looking closely at the pictures to infer what is happening and how each person is feeling. The shift from black and white to vivid colors is both fun and insightful, and the little twist at the end will create positive conversations about perspective, attitude, and mindset. I would love to add this book to my classroom library, and look forward to sharing it with students, parents, and teachers.

Wordless picture book about Rosie who lives in a world that is black and white. She is sad and just kind of goes through her day until she sees a colorful butterfly that leads her to a pair of glasses. The glasses let her see the world in color and she mood completely changes. But then she loses her glasses and she finds something else to bring her joy.
It is a little confusing at first what the story is about and I think kids will certainly need a discussion about the message. Rosie is sad and having a bad day, so that is why everything is black and white. The glasses allow her to see the good and the world becomes colorful, but then she learns that its not just the glasses, there are many things that can help her see the beauty and good in the world.

This wordless picture book ignites a thousand+ words. Rosie's day begins with a cloud of doom over her head and it escalates as her day progresses. She is unable to find the proper clothes for school, her little brother annoys her at the breakfast table, a fast moving car splashes a tidal wave of water all over her as she heads off to school and it starts to rain big time. Oh my!! These misfortunes blacken her mood even more.

The school day finally ends and on her way home she makes an amazing discovery. She finds a random pair of red-rimmed glasses which she puts on. When she does her drab, black and white world disappears and the world she sees from behind those magical glasses is vibrant, colourful and full of happiness. Her black cloud dissipates and Rosie engages with the love and laughter expressed by those around her.

This wonderful book is a catalyst for discussion and because it is wordless imaginations are stoked and endless possibilities reign. The message is positive and uplifting ... how you view your days ( and your life) are often a personal choice and changes can be made, so please choose happy alternatives. I love the whole vibe of the book. The illustrations are detailed, emotional and packed with heart. I fell in love with the cover immediately and was so pleased that a wordless book could generate so many words by readers of all ages. I highly recommend it.

Interest K-3

Have you ever had one of those days when everything seemed to go wrong and you were just blah? Well that's how Rosie's day started off. From the minute she wakes up all throughout the school day Rosie just has a black cloud over her head. As she is walking home from school she finds an unusual pair of glasses and when she puts them on the whole world brightens. The rest of her day is sunny and the next day is fantastic! That is until she accidentally drops the glasses in the river. Can Rosie continue her good day? Were the glasses magic or can she keep her day sunny?

This is a precious wordless picture book! The illustrations are fantastic. I love the lesson that it teaches about your perspective on life. Do not miss this adorable picture book!

This wordless children's book is so fun! Everyone has those days when nothing seems to be going right and it's just a crabby day, but after Rosie finds a pair of glasses, her perspective changes and she can see the color and beauty in her everyday surroundings that were annoying, gray, and dull earlier in the day!

This wonderfully illustrated picture book proves that the saying; "A picture is worth a thousand words" is true.

Dave Whamond starts out using black and white drawings to depict how sad Rosie is and to show that she sees the world through a veil of that sadness. Once Rosie finds a pair of seemingly magical glasses, colors start to show up in her world and her sadness lifts.

I do not want to spoil the twist or the ending, so I will not mention anymore of the storyline. Remember, all this is being depicted through pictures alone, there is not a single word of storyline in this entire book.

While this is a children's book, I believe it would also be a beneficial gift to anyone suffering from depression and/or any other mental illness. In fact, it would be beneficial to just about 100% of the population to read.

I rate ROSIE'S GLASSES as 5 out of 5 Stars.

This is a cute children's story about a little girl who is having a sad, gray day until she finds a pair of glasses that allow her to see things more colorfully. There are no words, just pictures, and it's illustrated very nicely, so it's appropriate for early readers and not-yet-readers.

Thanks to Kids Can Press for this picture book! I’ve never done a wordless picture book before so this was quite a new experience. I think this book would be great for kids of all ages, especially because it is wordless.

My galley of this book is wordless, and I hope the final copy stays that way. Rosie sees the world in black and white. It’s all dreary and hopeless, until she stumbles across a special pair of glasses that turn her world in to bright colors. A well done story that needs no words to convey its meaning.
