This thriller is rich in detail and chock full of characters that are quirky and unforgettable. The mystery itself is slower moving than modern audiences expect but patience is a virtue with this pure Georgette Heyer brew, the ending is delicious!

Thank you NetGalley and SOURCEBOOKS Landmark for my copy of this book! This was my second murder mystery by Heyer, both books being very similar in style. Heyer has a classic and singular way of describing characters, which makes her stories thoroughly enjoyable. The mystery though is not thrilling and is somewhat predictable and far fetched at the same time. The characterization and character development are flawless as in all her other books, but the crime disappoints the reader. I’d recommend this book to other golden age mystery fans because of the authors ability to write down her characters, but don’t expect an intricate and complex crime to solve.

FABULOUS! I just absolutely love this book and love the way Georgette Heyer builds the suspension and twists. Far more enjoyable as a crime book than any written by Agatha Christie, a true joy to read!

Entertaining, light-hearted mystery set in a country house with a cast of very likeable characters. It has thriller elements, reminiscent of Edgar Wallace, and some slight affinities with some of the less complicated early Margery Allingham novels.

Readers who enjoy traditional 1930’s British crime with a conventional framework will love this- criminal gangs, ghostly goings-on, mysterious strangers, all feature. The dialogue is good and the writing moves the story along at a nice pace.

3.5 stars.

Footsteps in the Dark

Thank you NetGalley for this advance copy to read in exchange for an honest review.
Four English family members, three siblings, and the elder sister's husband acquire a remote property in the village of Framley. An elderly aunt joins the family at this country house.
The main house was once a monastery with a chapel some distance from the house. An ancient cemetery adjoins the chapel. The main house is called The Priory. The family settles in despite rumors the property is haunted by a frightening spirit called The Monk due to its wearing a long black robe and full cowl.
The two men in the family dismiss the idea of a ghost. They do not believe in the supernatural despite the ghost frightening some members of the family. They believe someone is behind these scare tactics with the object of making them leave the property. A harrowing search brings them close to death and fuels their suspicions about their eccentric neighbors. An engrossing read as they try to find this dangerous killer who's killed once..

I have read almost all of Heyer's regency novels but I have to admit to having been unaware that she had written thrillers (me bad!) - I love Heyer's novels AND I love golden age crime novels, a match made in book heaven as far as I was concerned when I saw it on NetGalley.

Footsteps in the Dark is a great read; full of mysterious ghostly sightings, things that go bump in the night, local folk doing strange things and London types trying to be country folk. And then there's the murder!

Will definitely be reading more of Heyer's thrillers, was so pleased to find out that this is the first of at least seven or eight other titles.

Georgette Heyer is more remembered for her romance novels, but she did write a few mystery books and they are all wonderful, plenty of twists and turns, a murder and of course some romance.
I really enjoyed her mysteries and put them into the category of the golden age type.
This one was not one of her better ones, but it is very good and the characters are just fun, in an old world way. I love all her mystery books and I am so glad that they are becoming available again. If you enjoy the golden age era, you will like this one.

Although better known for her Regency and Georgian historical novels, Georgette Heyer did also write a dozen of so detective novels, Footsteps in the Dark being one. I like her mysteries because of the characters and the unexpected romance that tends to pop up in the middle, rather than because of the puzzle.

In this, I enjoyed the characters, the touch of romance, and the creepy mystery.
