This short read starts out simple enough. Paul Baron is wrestling with his role as a judge for the World Book of Records. Going from place to place and having to judge each potential world breaking human or animal record and frequently having to tell people that they didn’t quite make a record is slowly breaking Paul. He wishes that people were satisfied with being average.
One day, Paul finds in his inbox a new entrant for a record. Someone is trying to get his attention by killing people they deem to be lowlifes and asking to be recognized in the World Book of Records. Paul takes this message to the police and they initially don’t take it seriously. But when bodies start turning up at the locations the emails indicate, its clear there is a serious problem.
When Paul doesn’t put the writer in the book, the writer threatens Paul.
I found this short story to be quite interesting. It did turn dark at times, but I enjoyed the outcome for Paul.
