A story of self-finding, Catharsis is about a young black man named Michael and his attempt to escape his present life in America in search of his inner self. This book was kind of strange to get used to. Michael's inner mind became the point of view for the novel and often it read as of a young boy was narrating it instead of an adult man. However, I think this sort of narration was a part of the writers purpose to further evoke the evolution of the main character because towards the end of the novel the style was less juvenile and more assertive and self-assured. Michael's journey examined so many different areas from love to his purpose in life and these subjects are typically not expressed too well for Black Men. Especially in regards to their interactions with other people of color. However, I believe the author has started a great dialogue in these realms and I would love to see more novels dedicated to men's mental health such as this one..
