ALL OF THE STARS!

OH MY GOD YOU GUYS!

Thank you Netgalley and Berkley for providing me with an ARC!

So much love! So addicting! This was my first Samantha Young book, and now I’m dying to read all of her other ones! This is super fun enemies-to friends with benefits-to lovers trope and I had such a great time devouring it.

It’s about this career driven woman named Ava, who meets this ridiculously hot Scottish man at the airport and then they’re forced to sit next to each other, bickering the entire way through. I loved the banter and the witty dialogue. These two hate each other but their is still a strong sexual chemistry. They’re both attracted to the other but since they hate one another’s personality, it just makes sense to bang it out with no plan of feelings ever getting involved right? When Caleb ends up in Boston for a short business meeting, they decide once wasn’t enough and they take up a sexual relationship, but then they start to actually like each other and then decide to becoming friends. Slowly they begin to open up to one another and fall for each other, fighting it the whole way through. Both have broken pasts and they are terrified of history repeating itself.

Such a fun plot! The enemies to lovers trope is my favorite and I can’t stress enough how WEL it is done here. These two truly fall in love and it’s beautiful to watch. Caleb is beyond hot, especially if you love alpha males. He was Sam Hueghan in my brain and I had a great time with him. (They even compare him to Outlander!) I will say though I wish the groveling at the end was a bit more. I would loved to see more of them as an actual couple, but the location of where he showed up was great and the epilogue was very sweet.

I really loved Ava! I thought she was a strong protagonist and had a lot of depth to her. Her backstory was so sad and I felt so bad for her! I loved her friendship with Harper and the subplot of what was going on with Harper was crazy. So much angst! But a great message of strength.

The ANGST! made my heart hurt! I didn’t see some things coming and was on the edge of my seat a good portion of the second half.

I really hope we get another one because like Caleb said, Jamie needs to find his Ava! And I want to see more of these two! Really great story and I can’t wait to read more of Samantha Young’s book!
*races to pick up On Dublin Street*

Be sure to grab this one as soon as it goes on sale! You don’t want to miss out on Caleb and Ava’s love story!

FIGHT OR FLIGHT is the kind of book that reels you in with an initial feel of light, fun and hateful banter. However, it is not long before this becomes a pretty intense read and whilst I wasn’t expecting that, I was so into the characters and the story, that I welcomed it. This is a book that builds and builds and I am here for all the story development, for ever. In fact, I didn’t want it to end.

Caleb Scot is a vision to behold but an utter, rude jerk of Glaswegian persuasion and being seated next to him on two flights and a number of queues, tests Ava beyond her capabilities. His arrogance seems unparalleled and his inability to emote drives Ava to distraction. Yet, there’s definitely a bubbling of something underneath.

“Seriously. Some omnipresent being is playing with us. No two people can keep bumping into each other like this without the help of some twisted Fate.”

As the story moves to Boston, the characters pan out to include some meddling work friends, family and most importantly one of the side characters I adored, Harper. There’s a depth to this story telling that makes it possible to tell part of Harper’s story without feeling like a distraction from the main event. These elements are what made it a great book.

As I grew to know Caleb and Ava better, I fell in love with both of them for themselves and I cheered for them together. I wanted more than their arrangement and I wanted them both to see their potential as individuals and as a couple. These two had chemistry in buckets, exploding buckets of gunpowder. As Ava began to see the real Caleb, the revelations were pretty, damn good.

“...that sardonic smirk, his fierceness, his surprising gentleness, his honesty. He didn’t say a lot, but it made you pay attention when he did, and moreover, most everything he said made sense. There was a blunt kindness to Caleb that I appreciated and respected.”

FIGHT OR FLIGHT made me read at 2am to finish, it grew to such an intense package, I needed the end and yet didn’t want it. This book deserves every star it earned along the way and Samantha Young was on fire writing this one. It is a perfect stand alone contemporary romance.

I voluntarily read an early copy of this book.

Fight or Flight.... That is a very good question and below all will be answered!

I'm not going to start this review with a synopsis of the book because hey! that's what the author spends hours writing the blurb for so instead i'm going to give you my thoughts and feelings about this book instead. I'm such a complete sucker for an arrogant alpha male hero, that's a little bit broken, and unknowingly to him, he needs a woman that is beautiful and independent, caring but also strong enough to handle all of his crap as well as her own. Caleb Scott and I quote is a "Blonde Scottish Viking" that fits into that category and is one very sexy but broken alpha male. At the start of this book I was totally on the fence about him as he is one arrogant and mean S O B to Ava but by the end of the book I so wanted to divorce my husband, declare my undying love for him and have his babies! Caleb just ticked all of my boxes on the kind of man I love to read about, he is tall, ruggedly handsome, scottish and down right bloody moody but also he's a god in the bedroom which all of us girls can only ever hope to find. Yes his character is flawed but I liked that part about him and it bought out a little sense of realism about him.
Ava Breevort on the other hand is a woman with many hidden layers. She is beautiful, smart and dresses like she is a privileged socialite. She seems kinda shallow at first until her background is revealed and explains why her self image is so very important to her. I liked her right from the start and there was just something about her that drew me to her character and made me think that there had got to be something more to her personality than just being what she wanted everyone else to see on the surface.
We are all at times guilty of judging others by their appearance and Caleb is just as guilty as Ava for doing that on first meeting each other. She thinks him rude and arrogant and he thinks she is stuck up and a pampered princess, but looks aren't always what they seem and can be all deceiving.
They are a brilliant mix of opposites attract or enemies to lovers, and they have that magnetic pull between them that neither of them can deny. The love/hate emotions they have going on between them turns into a fiery lust and passion that made for some very steamy reading indeed. Samantha Young has such a talent for writing such gripping romance with plenty of drama and torment thrown in to bring agony to both her characters and her readers alike. I was absolutely held captive by this book and it's wonderful characters as the writing was just so good, and the story was so beautifully plotted with a few twists and surprises added to the mix to shake things up a bit and bring more angst to this already heart pounding story. This has got to be my #1 favourite romance of 2018 as I really don't think anything else can come close to how much I loved this story. So now to answer the aforementioned question above which is definitely to FIGHT, for love and for all you hold dear.
I'd give this book a bazillion stars if I could but alas as only 5 are available here's to 5 Amazing stars! +++++

Oh, how I love Samantha Young’s writing! So full of heart, filled with passion, and touches you so deeply.

Fight or Flight is filled with emotion! It’s witty, fun, heartbreaking, and heartwarming. I smirked and laughed and cried. It’s wonderful! Caleb and Ava’s journey is heartfelt, it’s one of emotional turmoil, of slowly breaking down barriers, of allowing yourself to love and be loved, of acceptance and trust. My heart was racing from the moment I began reading it until the end. I couldn’t put it down. And the beautiful relationship and bond between Ava and Harper added so much to the story. These three beautiful characters will capture your heart and not let go.

This book had me grinning, laughing, angry and crying. Now that, makes a great book! You have done it again, Samantha!!! I really wasn’t sure what to expect with this one and was pleasantly surprised with it! An angry Scot and a well mannered woman with such chemistry was sure to be explosive! This book had me from the very first page. I just love reading the Scottish accent and slang. It makes the book even more interesting. Caleb and Ava are complete strangers who literally bump into one another. From that very first encounter had you on your toes. This was such an enjoyable read that you definitely don’t want to miss!

I love a good enemies to lovers story. There is something about that love/hate relationship that makes me giddy. When Ava Breevort meets Caleb Scott at an airport, there is no love lost between them. Of course, they end up on the same flight sitting right next to each other. Ava has never met anyone as rude and grouchy as Caleb. He may be a bit of a bastard, but he's gorgeous, rugged, and Scottish. With all the animosity floating around them, there is a ton of chemistry, too. This lands them in bed together during an unexpected and extended layover.

Ava is sure she'll never see Caleb again and she is fine with that. Even though it was the best sex of her life, she can't stand the guy. Fate has other plans. These two are thrust into each others lives time and time again. Though they can't seem to get along, they also can't seem to stay away from each other. There really is a very thin line between love and hate....

Ava was a heroine I really did enjoy reading about. She had this really put together outside, but she had a lot going on underneath that. I loved seeing her growth and watching her come out of her shell a bit and realize everything didn't have to be perfect all the time. She could just be herself. Then there is Caleb... Like Ava, I had a bit of a love hate relationship with this man. There were parts that I truly did love his character and I think for the most part, he's a great guy. But, there were also parts where things he said and did made me really upset and I'm surprised Ava was as forgiving as she was. I'm not sure I would have been. Still, by the end, I was very happy with  how the story turned out!

Samantha Young's writing was fantastic as always. I don't think this author knows how to write a bad book. I've enjoyed every book of hers I've read, and I've read about them all. Fight or Flight was completely addicting and fun, but it was also emotional and sexy. Overall, this was a great read. Recommend for anyone who loves contemporary romance and a good enemies to lovers story.

I am always up for a good hate-to-love romance, and Young gave me just that.

Who?

• Ava - An control freak, type A Boston-based interior designer, who had stepped out of the dating pool after a long-term relationship ended in betrayal.

• Caleb - A gruff Scottish CFO, who just says "no" to commitment after being badly burned in his last relationship.

What?

While traveling from Arizona to Boston, every encounter between Ava and Caleb ended in confrontation, until ire gave way to desire, and they enjoyed, what they thought, would be one night of passion. When the universe brought them together once again, they agreed to a no-strings-attached physical relationship, which quickly turned into something more, but would Caleb and Ava be able to put their past behind them, and embark on a future together? Would it be fight or flight?

Why?

There are so many things to love about this book!

Ava was a fabulous heroine. She was smart and sassy, and appeared to be a perfectionist, but under that glossy veneer was someone damaged by her past. Once the details of her upbringing and her broken engagement came to light, I understood Ava a lot better, and was really proud of the progress she made over the course of this book.

Caleb was the perfect grumpy hero. I have no idea why I love the grumpy one's so much. Maybe it's because when they are sweet and tender, it seems so much more meaningful. It's a side of themselves they only reveal to those who earn it, and that was the case with Caleb. Like Ava, he suffered some great losses. It was pretty heartbreaking, when he finally confessed about his past, and quite understandable why it was difficult for him to trust another woman. Though, I must admit, he made me nutty quite a few times during this book, however, right when my frustration peaked, it would ebb, because he would do something sweet to offset my irritation.

Ava and Caleb together were sparks and fireworks, like every time. Their interactions were marked by fun and witty banter, as well as lots of heat. But there were some really quite and beautiful moments too. Slowly, they each peeled aways the layers, and were able to see what was below the surface, and it terrified them as their hearts cracked open bit by bit. The way they reacted caused me some heartache, but this is a true romance book, so don't worry, Young made it up to me in some big ways.

I am sort of hoping this is the beginning of a series, because there were two characters, who I would love to see more of. Harper, Ava's bestie, was a stellar friend, and she had quite a storyline in this book. I would love to learn more about the past, which was eluded to, and see her get her HEA. I was also intrigued by Caleb's brother. He was an artist with a little darkness residing inside him from his own loss, and there is definitely a book there.

Overall: A fabulous hate-to-love romance, which was fun, sexy, and packed with feels.

Is this second chance romance? Enemies to lovers? Sexy alpha male romance? Obnoxious, sexy Scot with a beard sizzling romance? How about all the above, and more. Let’s not forget the angst, the heartache, and one stubborn as all hell character who meets a fiery interior designer under untimely circumstances in an airport, and although they instantly hate each other, the chemistry between them is undeniable. When it’s apparent that they’re going to be living in the same city, the stakes are very much raised. No matter how much they try to remain casual, feelings always seem to get in the way, and when love is unrequited and emotions start ruling, drastic measures must be taken. Wonderful writing, fab story with in-depth characters. I was hooked from start to finish. I received an advanced copy of this book from the author via NetGalley. This is my honest review.

DNF @ 11%. I just can not get into this book and I am really not in the mood to make myself try. I really dislike both the lead characters so far and the male lead's Scottish accent is driving me insane. A couple of main words (like "to" and "didn't") are spelled out differently to show the accent and I'm just not feeling it. I think you need to do most of the dialogue like that or none at all.

This book was sooo good and the perfect bit of escapism I needed as the weather gets more autumnal.

Ava and Caleb are similar in some regards as neither are looking for a relationship, but when they meet on a flight they can’t ignore the sizzle of attraction between them.
Both characters are well portrayed and the emotions and reactions seem both honest and real, sometimes romance novels can orchestrate drama and arguments, that lack a truth and a honesty. This felt like a very real romance.

My only niggle and it’s a tiny one is that I know he’s Scottish but i would have preferred if he didn’t talk in an accent all the time, I found the word ‘tae’ especially annoying.

Brilliant book, great for cheering up a grey afternoon. Thanks to Netgalley and InkSlinger for this ARC in exchange for a honest review .

Liked, didn't love this one. I never really understood the draw to Caleb, the love interest (other than the physical). However, the rapport was entertaining and I liked Ava's devotion to her friend Harper. I would definitely be interested in reading another book from this author.

“And P.S. You win when you realize that anyone can hurt you, even those you never expect it from. Once you know that … you’ll never be knocked off your feet long enough to lose.”

'Fight Or Flight' is a fabulous contemporary romance novel by Samantha Young.

The universe is conspiring against Ava Breevort. As if flying back to Phoenix to bury a childhood friend wasn’t bad enough, a cloud of volcanic ash traveling from overseas has delayed her flight home to Boston. Her last-ditch attempt to salvage her trip is thwarted by an angry Scotsman, Caleb Scott, steals the last first-class seat right out from under her. However, as they journey home Ava and Caleb’s antagonism somehow lands them in bed together.

It was just meant to be one night, but then Caleb shows up on her doorstep and proposes that they continue their physical relationship while he’s stranded in Boston. Knowing there’s no chance she might fall for him since she barely likes him and his time in her life is temporary, Ava agrees.

However, as she gets to know Caleb, she realises she may have just made a big mistake because Caleb Scott isn’t quite as unlikable after all. But when Caleb’s stay in Boston becomes permanent, Ava needs to decide whether to fight her growing feelings for him or risk getting her heart broken by attempting a relationship with a man who is just as much against relationships as she was.

A miracle had happened. I found myself feeling something for a guy. Actually, maybe, wanting to try out something real with him. And he just happened to be the most brutally honest, commitment-phobic man I’d ever met.

I have read and loved every single book Samantha Young has written, and I was dying to get my hands on 'Fight Or Flight'. Surprisingly it took me a bit to get into this book and I even began to worry that I wasn’t going to like it, although I think that was purely because at the beginning of the novel Caleb Scott is a very unlikable character and – quite frankly – a straight up asshole, so it took me a while to warm up to home and really get into the story.
Thankfully worry did not last long as you soon begin to see more from the Scotsman than just his defensive and arrogant façade, and before long I was just as in love with 'Fight Or Flight' and its characters as I have been with every other one of Samantha Young’s books.

I absolutely loved the arc these characters travelled, particular the arc their relationship traversed, as you see them go from enemies, to ‘enemies with benefits’, to ‘friends with benefits’ and into a fully-fledged romance as they each fought to overcome past wounds and betrayals.

“We’ve both made it clear that this is just a physical relationship, and after last night I am more convinced than ever that you’re not one of these women who tells you she’s happy with it just being sex but is angling for more. I get that now. Which means when we talked about being friends, we both meant that too. We can handle it. So I made up my mind that you’re my friend, Ava. And I’m worried about my friend.”

One of my favourite things about Samantha Young’s writing is her ability to create realistic and multi-dimensional characters. I loved that she didn’t just write Caleb and Ava as having ‘commitment issues’ to add drama, but really explored the way betrayal can affect someone and showed, incredibly realistically, their journey with recovery. From having them initially avoid anything that could possible risk them getting hurt, to accepting the things that occurred in their pasts, and eventually getting to the point where they were ready to move on with their lives.

“We’re all afraid of something, sweetheart. It’s up to us whether we stay and fight that fear … or whether we run and hide from it. I’m glad you’re not going to hide anymore. You have to promise not to hide anymore.”
“I promise.”

So often these sorts of themes are used in a book as nothing more than a basic attempt at creating depth and extra drama in a character’s life, and it was so refreshing to see an author take the time to fully flesh out the characters and give them a realistic development arc where falling in love wasn’t some magic cure-all, but was instead a way for them to realise what they really wanted in life and give them the confidence to go after it.

“Caleb, don’t you see? You changed me. You made me brave enough to fight against what I was most afraid of and admit that I’m in love with you. I wish I could make you feel brave too. But that’s not going to happen apparently.” I swiped at my tears but refused to break eye contact. He needed to understand the reality of what he was doing to us. “Just because you’ve decided I’m not worth the risk doesn’t mean that I’m not willing to take it again. So, I have to thank you for that. Because it might take weeks, months, but I will fight to get over you. I will fight to find someone who loves me and wants to make a future with me. I will move on.”

While there are some heavier moments, 'Fight Or Flight' does have many light-hearted and fun moments, particular as Caleb and Ava’s antagonism begins to merge into a more playful teasing.

“I hope it falls off,” I muttered.
“What?”
I gave him a blinding smile. “I hope they fall all over you.”
“You said, ‘I hope it falls off.’”
“Did I?” I shrugged innocently. “Slip of the tongue.”
“Aye, if I remember correctly you’re good at that too.”
I glowered at him, scowling harder as I felt the seat shake with his laughter.
Bastard. Scot.

'Fight Or Flight' is a fun and sexy contemporary romance and I hope we get to see more about Ava and Caleb and the rest of the characters Samantha has created for this spectacular story.

I loved this romance with age 30-something characters, people established in their careers, and hurt from past loves and betrayals. Ava and Caleb start out as almost enemies, become casual lovers and then there is a rocky road to the HEA. The journey was just as good as the destination. I liked Ava's friend Haley, and Caleb's brother, Quinn. Possible couple? Samantha Young has only matured and gotten better as a writer. I'll always read her.

I’ll be honest, it took me a bit to get into this book. I had a hard time with Caleb. I love a good alpha jerk but, he took it to the extreme. He had to work hard to win me over but, he quickly succeeded. Ava didn’t have to put in as much work however it still took a bit for me to warm up to her too. Once I did though it was like fanning a flame and I could not put this book down. I had to know what was going to happen next because so much happened in this book I knew with every turn of the page I would get sucked further into this amazing story.

This is one of the few books this year that held scenes that just punched me in the gut and strangled me with emotions. My chest ached, my throat closed off, and I physically ached for these characters. When a book evokes that powerful of emotions within you, you know it’s one that will stick with you forever. The second I finished I immediately went back to bookmarked pages just to see if I would get the same reaction the second time I read it. It didn’t come as a surprise to me that I did. What did come as a surprise is that a book with such a fun cover and a blurb that sounded more like a romantic comedy could pack this kind of punch. Kudos to Samantha Young for being able to take me by surprise and keep me glued to my kindle.

There is so much going on in this book that were I to mention it all this review would be pages long. All you need to know is that this book has all the feels, it leaves you feeling both satisfied and craving more. These characters are some of the best I’ve read and you’d be doing yourself a disservice by not reading their story.

This book was fun! It was also a rollercoaster of emotions. It went from lighthearted and sexy to really angsty. It let the reader know pretty early on that Ava has a heavy background but it's not until later that the reader discovers Caleb also has a heavy background. The two are rude and snobby at the beginning so it takes some time to warm up to them but I did. I began to like their personalities because they worked well together. It was solely about sex at first but it grew to be much more complicated and interesting as the pages turned. Their banter was lovely and whenever they were in a room together, it was very intense and hot. Some of the background elements seemed like they were created just so there could be some very angsty scenes and it was a bit overdone sometimes. While I enjoyed that Caleb was Scottish, it took me some time to get used to how the author wrote in his Scottish accent. She also could have been more creative in his last name (Scott...come on. He's Scottish and his last name is Scott) as well as his brother's (Jamie). She was obviously influenced by Outlander, which was mentioned at least once in the book.
This is my first Samantha Young book and can easily see myself reading more of her stuff. This is kind of a beach read and not to be taken seriously for sure but I would recommend it for anyone looking for a quick and romantic read.

Ava is gorgeous -- blonde with a perfect build and a beautiful face, she puts a lot of effort into her looks not to impress others, but to impress herself. Ava's skirt suits and perfectly-applied makeup make her feel good inside and out, and if anyone else appreciates the view then that's good for them. Ava has no problem being single; she has her best friend, Harper, a six-figure salary for a job she loves, and a meticulously designed expensive apartment in Boston. Caleb, on the other hand, is 6+ feet of blond Scottish muscle with the stubble and tattoos to go along with it. No one would guess he's the CFO of a major tech company, especially considering how impolite he is, but it turns out he's got the brains and the brawn. When Ava and Caleb run into each other at the airport, literally, it's hate at first sight. Caleb is rude, obnoxious, and wouldn't know what "chivalry" meant if it knocked him in the head. Against all odds, though, the two keep crossing paths until it seems that fate must really want them to try to hash out their differences. And they find just the way to do it -- friends with benefits. Both Ava and Caleb have complicated pasts, so it's easy for the two of them to lose themselves in a no-strings-attached setup. But when the line between casual fling and true friendship starts to blur, it only gets more difficult for both to ignore their true feelings. With one of them making the same mistakes over again and the other not able to put the past where it belongs to take a chance on love, it seems like this unlikely duo is bound for heartbreak.

Thoughts: It's not a surprise that I finished this book in a day. It was a cute, fun read, for the most part. I enjoyed Ava's character, even though she has an unhealthy way of dealing with life's stressors. Earth to Ava: Throwing yourself into york is not the answer! Caleb, however, is a total jerk at the beginning of the book. And the middle of the book. And a little bit at the end, except for the epilogue. It's like the guy just can't help himself. He knows exactly the wrong thing to say and when to say it to cause the most damage. And lest we forget he has no concept of the words "please" and "thank you". Ava may be able to look past it, but not this former waitress. And how he talks to Ava sometimes just drove me nuts. I ended up enjoying their dynamic by the end, but it really took some time for Caleb to win me over. How Ava could let some of his shenanigans go is beyond me. But, alas, it was still an enjoyable, light read with witty banter, strong chemistry, and a somewhat unique storyline to pull it all together.

JANEANE

I love bit of rom-com. I love everything I have read by Samantha Young. Samantha Young gives me a rom-com? Woo hoo!

And one with a Hot Scot? Swoon!

Right from the get go, I was hooked on Fight Or Flight. Oh, the antaganism between Caleb and Ava, what amazing foreplay! As much as Caleb made me made on Ava's behalf, I couldn't help but love the man 😍😍😍

I lost count of how many times I laughed out loud at his OTT rudeness.

However, what I wasn't expecting was so much emotion. Yes, this is a romcom, however the story delved into some highly emotional events, and I am not going to lie, I did shed a tear or few at times.

We have some ab fab secondary characters. Ava's best friend Harper is the kind of besty we all need in our lives. She needs a story of her own

And I hope that we get more of Caleb's siblings stories - especially Jamie (another hot scot called Jamie? let me at him!)

I thoroughly enjoyed Fight Or Flight, and I can't wait to see what Ms Young brings us next.

BIANCA

Awwww that was soooo adorably hilarious!!

I just adored everything about Ava and Caleb from the very first moment!

You start reading and you just love those two. Caleb is so over-the-top rude to Ava. He thinks she's this little rich girl with her expensive designer clothes. And of course Ava insults him right back. I laughed all through the beginning of the book.

But the book has some not so funny moments too. We go back in time a few times. Back to teenager Ava and her two best friends. And there are some other exciting and even scary moments along the way.

But mostly it's about Ava and Caleb and how they're dealing with not wanting anything serious, but at the same time, they can't stay away from each other. I just loved their foreplay fighting!

Getting those two to their happily ever after will not be easy! ☺

We also get to know some more people. Like Ava's bestie Harper - I really hope we'll get her book too ... and Leo and Caleb's siblings - especially JAMIE!

SAM, PLEASE GIVE ME ALLLL THESE BOOKS!

(If we don't get at least Harper's book, I would have to complain that we heard a tiny little bit too much about her life in this book!)

And while I'm complaining about things. I think the mega-rom-com-ness from the beginning gets a bit lost along the way. I would've loved some more of that sprinkled along the story. BUT ... the story was amazing the way it was... I just missed the fun a little bit ... The book was maybe a bit too long, with all their back and forth ...

Still - amazing book. I even shed some tears! ☺

I loved Ava & Caleb and I need more from that world!

And I soooo need to see this on Netflix or the big screen!

With Sam Heughan and ... I would say a young Reese Witherspoon maybe. ☺

It was an engaging story but there were elements of their relationship that bordered on abusive that made me uncomfortable. There was that tinge there that didn't make it hard to imagine that he'd lose his temper one time and hit her.
