First I want to let you know that this book is the second book in the Code of Honor series, but it can also be read as a standalone. I want to say that although I have always loved reading Irene Hannon's books, This series is shaping out to be my ultimate favorite that she has written. I love the characters, especially reading about the close relationship that the "Treehouse gang" shared and how they would bug and tease each other, but the second one of them needed help or just needed someone to talk to, they would drop everything (if possible) and come over. I have to say though that my favorite part of the story was when both Kristin and Luke patched up their almost-estranged relationship with their parents and that even though, the world was spinning around them, God still helped them both to find a bit of peace in a storm of turmoil. Overall, although there is blood mentioned when discussing the murder of Kristin's clerk, there is nothing graphic or gory about this book and I give it 5 out of 5 stars*****.

As children Kristin Dane and her best friends promised years ago to make the world a better place, now the owner of a fair trade store, Kristin is doing just that. She meets Detective Luke Carter at Trish and Colin's wedding. When her assistant is murdered, and a customer is also found dead, Luke is assigned to her case.

The investigation leads them to Syria, and matters of national security.

Intense and full of action, this is a book that is hard to put down. Luke is a widower, not looking to find love again. But as he and Kristin work on the case he finds himself drawn to her.

Kristin is determined to get to the bottom of the crimes connected to her fair trade shop. Her faith is strong, and she loves her job, making a living helping others. I loved her friendship with Jack and Colin, they are like protective brothers, and love to tease Luke about her, while also welcoming him into their group.

This book had a good balance of action, suspense, and great character building, it was fast paced, yet the characters were so well developed. The stakes were high and it had me on the edge of my seat, guessing until the end. Highly recommend for fans of mystery, and high stakes action and suspense!

Hooked from the first page and the grip didn’t let go! Man, sad to see this book end. The plot and different elements of the story are so well developed, unique and well written. I love the romantic tension between the characters. It lightens the rather heavy story a bit. The suspense with the different elements of the story (both the regular storyline and the romantic thread) are well thought out. I did predict one element but it wasn’t a problem and I didn’t feel like it detracted from the story. Overall this story is amazing. I love Irene Hannon’s books and she has quickly become one of my favorite authors. Can’t wait to read other books by Ms Hannon.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. This has in no way influenced my review. All thoughts are my own.

Another good read by Irene Hannon, Hidden Peril kept me hooked til the end. It was a little predictable—I suspected the evil person early on—but it was still a great story line with a hint of romance that I like. Recommended.

Great suspense!

Irene Hannon never disappoints! There is always plenty of suspense and fast action to keep you turning the pages. The romance also progresses at a believable pace without being over the top. I also enjoy how she includes some of the main characters from previous series.

I really enjoyed the characters of Kristin and Luke in this story. They both have past hurts they are dealing with. When they are brought together by unimaginable circumstances, they realize what true priorities really matter. I highly recommend this book!

This book shows Irene Hannon at her best. I LOVE her suspense novels. The plot is intricate and detailed and ranges from St. Louis to Syria. The events and situations have the ring of authenticity. The action and the danger don't stop until the very end.
I really liked Kristin Dane. She is a woman I'd want to be friends with. She has a free trade shop and is trying to make the world a better place. She is brave and courageous, willing to help even when it could be dangerous. She has two very faithful, supportive friends who look out for her. Yet she still has room for an enigmatic cop that is new in town. She was relatable and likeable. I've read too many novels where that wasn't the case.

I would highly recommend this novel. While it can be read as a stand-alone book, treat yourself and read book one in the series first and then go on to read other Hannon series. Hannon is one of my favorite authors and she never disappoints.
Thank you to Revell for providing me with a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to leave a positive review. All opinions are my own.

Book 2: Hidden Peril

"Hidden Peril," book #2 in Irene Hannon's Men of Valor series is another fast-paced, intense read! First of all, be sure to read book #1 in this series, "Dangerous Illusions," first as you are introduced to the main character Kristin and her childhood friends in that and they all play roles in this one. Kristin loves her shop and the role that she plays with helping the world, this is part of the pact that she and friends made years back. However, when Kristin's employee is shot and killed in the shop and then a customer is killed, Kristin begins to believe that there is something sinister going on. Detective Luke Carter is new to the area's force, but not new to the job as he has experience in the field and recognizes signs that there is much more to the initial picture that is presented and he feels that Kristin may be in danger herself. This causes him even more concern as he realizes that he is losing his heart to this woman.

Kristin and Luke met at Trish and Colin's wedding, right at this start of this book and I loved how this interaction set the stage for what was to come, as well as building upon the bond between the three characters, and how the new people in their lives are being worked into these friendships as well. I cannot wait for book #3 to see even more of this! There are so many pieces to this story, so many layers, as Kristin is dealing with unresolved issues from her childhood involving her family, and although it takes a terrifying incident to see changes in these relationships, it was very well-written and I love that even after so many years, there can be a change as evidenced with Kristin and her parents. Luke had suffered so much heartache and he has been living his life, not feeling ready to love again or capable, but yet there comes a time, a time that is God's timing and His will that he is ready for a relationship and he was able to meet Kristin and then have much more contact with her due to the case. It is scary how real life this book is, as there are terrorist attacks and plans that we hear so much about and that is the world that we currently live in. However, this should not cause our faith to be shattered or to live in fear, and not follow our hearts; these characters are all such inspiring examples of this and this is a wonderful romantic suspense book that should not be missed!

Dangerous Illusions is one of my favorite novels from Irene Hannon, but the sequel. Hidden Perils. just took over my #1 spot! This book could be read as a stand-alone, but I enjoy following the same characters from the author’s other stories. Hidden Perils focuses on Kristen Danes, owner of a small import shop who stumbles head first into the middle of a murder with ties to a terrorism. The suspense in this book leads the reader on a chase for justice as Luke Danes tries to keep Kristen safe. But trouble finds Kristen with every turn of the page. The over-the-top intense ending makes this my #1 must-read for suspense fans.

This is the second in the series and readers will not be disappointed. Filled with lots of action, suspense and intrigue, readers will be caught up in the story from beginning to end. Kristin is a very compassionate character always thinking of others. Luke, the new guy on the police force has a variety of skills that add to the story. Anyone who loves suspense will enjoy this book. Highly recommended!

Hidden Peril is an edge of your seat suspense l. Great plot, characters and writing. This author never fails to deliver an excellent book. I highly recommend to fans of suspense. I received an arc from Netgalley and this is my unbiased review.

Whew! This is one intense suspense novel. Kristen is instantly endearing, as is widowed detective Luke. And let's just say he is VERY swoon-worthy. Liked this Code of Honor book better than the first, maybe because of the background shared about the Treehouse Gang (Colin, Kristen, Rick) in book 1. Interested to read Rick's story, whenever it releases. Learned a few more tidbits about him in Hidden Peril that will likely make him a rather compelling protagonist.

Irene Hannon is back with the 2nd book in this series. I typically love this genre and this author. However, I just couldn't get into this one. It seemed trite and forced. I hate to give this a negative review but I just did not like this book.

Hidden Peril by Irene Hannon

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Story Notes

Irene Hannon brings her readers a story that will have you reading carefully but swiftly as you try to piece together the clues of a murder/mystery that involves terrorism, artifact trafficking, and woman who will do whatever it takes to help catch the murderer.

In a time where terrorist acts are carried out on a daily basis, its hard to write a story that is relevant and exciting without using a cliche plot. Irene Hannon takes what could be an eye-roll inducing idea and infuses it with courage and heart that comes not from a military or police force but from a woman who seeks the good of others before herself. Kristin Dane is the only female member of the “Treehouse Gang”, a tri-set of friends which has moved beyond childhood “rescue” adventures to adult careers focused on helping others in the real world. Having grown up the only child of high-powered attorneys, Kristin was often left alone with her nanny, that is until she met Colin Flynn and Rick Jordan. With two guys who made it their business to ensure Kristin made it through school with at least two friends, she has gotten used to being smothered by their protection. But she’s also managed to make her mark on the world with a stint in the Peace Corp, a trip to Ethiopia and, her latest venture, a shop that features items made by people around the world that are seeking to end violence and death in war-torn countries. Kristin opens her shop with great joy each morning, thrilled that she is doing what God has called her to do – support those in need. But her joy turns to shocked sorrow when she arrives at her shop to find her friend and employee, Susan, dead behind the register counter. Not knowing who or why anyone would do this, Kristin immediately contacts the police, heartbroken that her friend’s life was cut short. The case fall into the lap of Detective Luke Carter, a man who met Kristin at Colin’s wedding the weekend before. Reeling a bit at knowing the shop owner given the short time he has been in town, Luke is curious as to why this crime would happen in such a nice area. As he begins to work the case, Luke will find that there is much more going on here than just a random killing. When he is called to consult on another similar killing, Luke discovers a connection to Kristin’s shop, WorldCraft, that would give whoever is responsible a good reason to kill. Kristin is still recovering from the shock of finding Susan and putting her shop back together when Luke comes to her with the news that one of her most frequent customers has been killed as well. Together they discover that someone is using products in her shop to funnel money into the coffers of terrorist groups. Hoping to trap whoever is responsible, they set up a new display of items and keep a careful eye out for who makes a purchase. But even with the help of the FBI, the trail of the purchased items goes cold after they are secretly exchanged in a crowd. Luke is happy to have Kristin out of danger now but is frustrated with his inability to catch the culprit. But things are just heating up, as they will come to find out, and who is really behind all the killings and stolen artifacts will be the most surprising discovery of all. Kristin will be given the chance to show her faith and courage as she comes face-to-face with a monster who intents to hurt as many others as possible before he dies. Luke’s faith will also be put to the test as he places Kristin’s safety in the hands of the One who holds all things. Their story is one you will not want to miss and will keep you up waaaaaayyyyy to late reading to the very last page. There were many things about this story that I loved but several of them would give away the resolution so I will just mention my favorite parts generally to keep from spoiling this wonderful story. First, there was the suspense of the story: I loved the way that Ms. Hannon gave enough details about the artifacts trafficking without making it boring. And the way the trap was set up and carried out had me holding my breath, one minute hoping something big would happen and the next hoping that this would not be the end of the story. And the finale of the book could not have been more gripping. The initial fear that rocked Kristin was palpable, but it was her courage in the situation that really had me cheering for her. I’m not at all sure that I could be willing the make the sacrifice she had determined to make for the sake of others, but I hope that I would be willing. I also enjoyed the romance between Kristin and Luke. They were both trying to be professional and keep the case as uncomplicated as possible and I was glad to see that their efforts were rewarded by the end of the story. I know how important it is to ensure that criminal cases are air tight with no hint of indiscretion, so I was pleased to see that Ms. Hannon made that clear and closed the necessary pieces of the cases before they moved beyond friendship. I loved the interaction with the other two members of the “Treehouse Gang”, Colin and Rick, as they made sure that Luke was doing everything right with Kristin. Being the brothers she never had proved a bit annoying to her but also made her feel loved and protected on all sides. One last thing I’ll mention was the way that the main character’s faith was very real and well woven into the fabric of the story. From their conversations to their personal thoughts, there was no doubt that their faith in Christ was central to their lives. It also gave a true legitimacy to the courage that Kristin displays at the crisis of the story, making the outcome even better. I will certainly be recommending this story and series to others as a great read that will be very much enjoyed. While it ties into the first book and leaves open a few pieces of conversation to be picked up by the third book, this story can be enjoyed as a stand alone. However, why wouldn’t you want to read the whole series of wonderful books?? I look forward to the third book in this series with great anticipation as I’m curious to hear Rick’s story and get more information on his shadowed background.

Is book two in the Code of Honor series. It could also be called the Treehouse Gang series. In book one, we experienced Colin and Trish’s story. Book two is Kristin’s story. She owns a story that sells products that support workers in third world countries. She is one of the more likeable female characters I have read. After a few deaths that appear related she becomes involved in helping the police find the murderer.

You immediately like Luke’s character when we meet him at the wedding. Hannon creates some special scenes with Luke. I truly enjoyed the entire scene at the wedding. And the scene at the end when he realizes what Kristin is willing to do. Luke’s sister and nephews add additional scenes that enhance the story.

Hannon created a wonderful balance between a suspenseful plot line and endearing characters that drew you in.

I have read all of her suspense books so I was over the moon when Nick and Mack were helping Luke. Nick’s story with his wife and the raggedy add doll were memorable. I highly recommend that series too.
So excited to read Rick’s story next. It cannot come soon enough.

If you are looking for an awesome writer. I highly recommend her.

As a huge of Christian fiction suspense, this one did not disappoint.
Kristin Dane has a shop that sells items from around the world and gives back to them. Included in the items are candles made by monks in Syria. Kristin is oblivious to the ISIS plot that involves her shop, and puts her life in danger.
When her assistant is killed behind the counter in the shop, and then, also, a local customer in her home, a connection is found with items sold n her shop--the candles from Syria. Kristin begins helping Detective Luke Carter, whom she had recently met at a wedding of one of her best friends.
To add a little spice to the story, a romantic interest begins to develop between Kristin and Luke.
Irene Hannon did a wonderful job (as always) weaving this story together. You won't want to put it down.
I received a complimentary copy from Revell and Netgalley and was under no obligation to leave a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Wow--fantastic book! VERY difficult to put down once you start reading...carve a few hours out of your schedule and start reading! Book 2 in the Code of Honor series but would be easily read as a stand-alone book. I was well into the book before I realized that I had read book 1 in the series and started recognizing familiar characters. Several new characters are introduced as well as the focus of this book is on Kristin. Action-packed, suspenseful, but also very realistic--although I hope never to face the situations Kristin faced in the book! Well worth the time to read!!!

Again, a thrilling read from one of my must read authors! Hidden Peril is packed with breathless action, intense intrigue, and relatable characters.

As teenagers, Kristin Dane and her two best friends took a vow to make the world a better place. Twenty years later, she's fulfilling that pledge through her fair trade shop that features products from around the world. All is well until, one by one, people connected to the shop begin dying.

Detective Luke Carter, new to the St. Louis PD, wants to know why. Before he can answer that question, however, the FBI weighs in and Kristin suddenly finds herself in the middle of international intrigue--and in the sights of the ruthless mastermind behind an ingenious and deadly, scheme. Can this cold-blooded killer be stopped before more people die . . . including Kristin?

Another good book by Ms. Hannon. I can't class this as an edge of your seat suspense book but it did have a good mystery. I will admit that I had figured out who was the bad guy as least half way through the book. I won't say more about that because I don't want to add any spoilers.

I really liked how her best friends were two guys. When the story opens she is best woman at one of their weddings. The guys are the family she never had as a child. When she is in trouble they are there for her immediately looking out for her. They also are ready to give Luke the "talk" about not hurting Kristin. Luke is still getting over his wife's death three years ago to have any interest in another woman. Then he meets Kristin at the wedding. He can't quit thinking about her. Then he is assigned the case of the murder in her shop. As the story unfolds, their feelings for each other evolve into something besides case related.

I would recommend this book to anyone who like mystery and romance.

I was given this book by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated in any way.

Kristin Dane is running a successful business, WorldCraft, a store that sells fair trade items. Kristin is unaware of the fact that her business could be linked to terror cells. Detective Luke Carter is called to investigate a crime at WorldCraft, which appears to be a robbery gone wrong. He is still grieving the loss of his wife a few years ago, but he can’t deny that he has feelings for Kristin. He may need to risk his heart, and life, to keep the one he loves safe.

This is the second book in Hannon’s “Code of Honor” series. It does seem to work as a standalone. However, it did take me a bit longer to get into this book than some others by Hannon. Perhaps that’s because I didn’t read the prior book. Relevant issues are addressed, such as terror cells. Scenes are descriptive, and it’s apparent that a great deal of research went into this story. The pace is steady throughout.

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy from NetGalley, but I wasn’t required to leave a positive review.

This is the second book in the Code of Honor series by Irene Hannon. This story follows Kristin Dane who pledged as a young girl to do her part to make the world a better place. Years later, she now owns and operates a shop that offers fair trade goods from around the world. There are a few people associated with the shop that end up dying and it is up to the police to determine why. Enter Detective Luke Carter, who is new to the St. Louis PD. They are in a race against time to figure out what the connection is between Kristin and her shop and the bodies that keep turning up. Kristin ends up being in the middle of an international mystery and potential terroristic plot.

This book was a great read. It was fast paced, suspenseful and kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end. I read a lot of mysteries and was able to figure out who one of the major players was in the plot BUT it didn’t detract from the plot and I was still engaged in the story and wanted to know how it was play out at the end. This was a solid second story to the series and am looking forward to the next release in the series.
