This is a delightful book from beginning to end from story to illustrations. It is a book full of charm that is perfect for early readers. It is full of the Anne Shirley charm featuring when she arrives to stay with Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. We get to know the creative and imaginative mind of Anne. We also learn about the wonderful characters in Avonlea as they interact with our redheaded Anne. The writer has done a wonderful job adapting this story for younger readers. The illustrations are divine and full of color perfect for the story. I recommend it for all readers whether you are a young reader or a fan of Anne and her world.

RATING: 5 STARS
2018; Tundra Books/Penguin Random House Canada

Anne Arrives is the first in a series of chapter books about Anne of Green Gables. This book focuses on the beginning of Anne of Green Gables when she arrives to Green Gables and meets Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert. This is a great book for getting children read for the original novels. Or perfect for fans like us! The illustrations are whimsical and as if one of the characters from the books decided to do the illustrations. I am looking forward to the others and more of Halpin's illustrations in other books.

Anne Shirley is one of my favorite fictional characters of all time, and I loved how they turned the classic into a series of chapter books. This book is somewhere between a chapter book and a picture book because it is small in the number of pages and covers only the very first part of the classic. Nevertheless, this is a book that I will add to my bookshelf because of how aesthetically pleasing it looks.

The author did a lovely job of trimming down the chapters to create an abridged version. Young readers of beginners of English would find this book easy to read and understand. Moreover, the illustrations are gorgeous. Abigail Halpin did a fantastic job in bringing Anne and her family at Green Gables to life. Anne’s expressions in each artwork are on point and exactly as I had envisioned when I first read the novel. The artist also used beautiful colors to bring the story to life, and my favorite ones were where Anne rides with Matthew Cuthbert, and we see the beautiful blossoms in the background.

Overall, “Anne Arrives” is an adorable children’s chapter book and an excellent start to the chapter book series of our favorite classic. I loved how they executed the first book, and I hope they do this for other classics like Charles Dickens’s works.

This book is absolutely gorgeous. I am a huge fan of Anne of Green Gables, so I was eager to read it. I love that it has been adapted for younger readers who will hopefully fall in love with the character of Anne and later move on to LM Montgomery's version.

There’s not much one can add to the beloved story of Anne of Green Gables, but George does it witness beautiful illustrations.

Anne of Green Gables has been around for over 110 years now. Considering L. M. Montgomery's death year of 1942, with the original copyright date of the text, that puts this classic Canadian story in the public domain. It's lovely that everyone can enjoy it for free or inexpensively. Except that it also means everyone and anyone can appropriate any parts of the story or characters for their own use. Anne Arrives is an example of taking Montgomery's beautiful writing and simplifying it down so far that it looses all meaning.

Illustration
The strongest part of Anne Arrives is easily the illustrations by Abigail Halpin. I love the prominent freckles, orange-red hair and petite look of Anne. If nothing else there are some lovely spreads to enjoy if you need a quick dose of Anne's adorable look.

Writing
It's really unfortunate to me that Kallie George has taken Montgomery's gorgeous, classic prose and dumbed it down to five or six sentences per chapter. Anne Arrives tells the story of the first six chapters of the original novel. All the dialogue is in a simple basic, 'See Spot Run' style. I realize that is because this is a book for early readers. However, perhaps it's worth noting that Anne is not really a story that early readers can fully benefit from.
If I pretend I have no knowledge of the Anne story, when I read the opening pages it feels like a very sexist story. It heavily implies that girls can't do chores, can't help on a farm and aren't able bodied enough to be of help to Matthew. Now, obviously time frame is relevant for context and the nuance of the story. As well as it being a small town and an older time period. All of this is lost in this simplified version of the story. I'm not convinced that this is the Anne we want children to first experience and it certainly doesn't feel like the Anne I know and love. My family is from PEI. My Nana (Grandmother) grew up in a farmhouse just a few kilometers away from Montgomery's family home and so Anne was a huge part of my childhood, even though I didn't live there.

Overall
As much as I love Anne I just don't feel that there is any justice or substance to this format and it has no appeal to me. I believe it is worth the delay for any little girl (or boy) so that they can experience an authentic and true Anne Shirley. This beloved classic story is too lovely to put into less sentences than are likely on the first page of the original book.

Please note: I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. This is an honest and unbiased review.

This is a gorgeous book to introduce beginning readers to Anne Shirley and the magic prose of L. M. Montgomery. George beautifully summarizes the early chapters of Anne of Green Gables and Halpin provides oh-s0 inviting illustrations to pair with the text. I will definitely be using this book for teaching purposes and can't wait for the next instalment in this series.

This is such a lovely retelling of a very popular classic story. "Anne of Green Gables" is a timeless work of children's literature that has won over the hearts of its readers for over 100 years. "Anne Arrives" brings new life to this story with beautiful illustrations and wording that is easy for young readers to understand and enjoy. This is an all around charming book that I highly recommend to young readers as well as Anne with an "e" fans of all ages.

'Anne Arrives: Inspired by Anne of Green Gables' adapted by Kallie George with illustrations by Abigail Halpin is the first book in a new early reader series, and I found it as charming as the book it's based on.

Told with easy fonts, less words, and lots of pictures, this book follows the early days of Anne arriving at Avonlea. She meets Marilla and Matthew and has an incident with a nosy neighbor.

All the familiar elements are here and with the abridgment, nothing feels really forgotten. The illustrations are a real nice addition, and this would be a good gift for a young reader to introduce them to a classic series.

A perfectly lovely chapter book that is a perfect representation of the Anne of Green Gables series. This first book is the story of Anne's arrival at Green Gables and her first run-in with Mrs. Lynde. And the illustrations are ADORABLE. I would readily recommend these to young readers.

This is a really cute illustrated version of one of my childhood favorites, Anne of Green Gables. The illustrations are cute but I don't think they fully capture the essence of Anne Shirley of the Green Gables setting.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

It's been a pretty long time since I've read these books, but I still have a soft spot in my heart for that awesome redhead. I think there's been a bit of an Anne revival lately - movies, shows, and books - and what can I say? I'm totally here for it. This lovely little book is one of my favorites. Even though it's just the very beginning of Anne's story - literally, Anne's arrival at Matthew and Marilla's house - it's a fabulous, early reader introduction to Anne.

I have read this with my daughter who is four and we both loved it! There are cute pictures and the text is simple but true to Anne. I think it is a great way to start young readers on Anne of Green Gables.

I just finished reading Anne Arrives and can not recommend this book enough! This is a easy reader version of the initial chapters of the children's class, Anne of Green Gables. Anne Arrives begins with Anne getting off the train and not being the gender desired, just as the novel begins. While the vocabulary and language is easier than the original book, it is by no means boring or repetitive that some easy reader books can become.

The illustrations are simply magnificent! They compliment the story and help with the comprehension of the text. The illustrations that are in the book are detailed and show emotions and era details, such as dress and decor.

This is the book you want to buy to expose your children or grandchildren to the wonderment of Anne of Green Gables. While it certainly can be read aloud over and over, it would be a great book for those second and third graders who love great stories. Every teacher should include this in their own classroom library for sharing.

This book is a solid five stars! A perfect gift for the grandchildren!

Thank you to #NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced reader copy of this wonderful book!

What an absolutely darling book! I loved everything about it. From the stunning artwork, to the chapter book style retelling of such a well known children's classic. I was nervous going in, because I often feel like classics should be left untouched, but I honestly fell in love with this book. The illustrations alone are enough to make me want to buy it. Water color illustrations filled to the brim with vibrant colors, and beautiful details! I simply couldn't stop admiring the pages!

I can't wait to see what else this author has to offer. I hope she continues on with the Anne of Green Gables story.

I have received a much appreciated digital copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Basic Plot: Mrs. Lynde is surprised when she sees her neighbour, Matthew Cuthbert, going to town. She discovers from Marilla that the Cuthberts are adopting a boy. Except, when Matthew gets to the train station, there's only a girl. He brings her home, because what else can he do?

WHAT’S COOL…
1) The illustrations by Abigail Halpin are absolutely delightful. I adore them! I like how she captured Anne herself. She looks like Anne! I particularly like some of the illustrations that have just Anne in them. Like when she's looking (sadly) out the window at the cherry blossom tree (the Snow Queen). Such a beautiful two-page spread!

2) This would make a wonderful introduction to Anne of Green Gables, especially for children who are ready for Chapter Books. This book is rather like a Chapter Book, in fact.

3) Oh, I teared up at the scene where Matthew comes to speak to Anne in the bedroom. (When she's in big trouble with Marilla.)

WHAT’S NOT COOL…
1) The title is a little weird. Why not Anne Comes to Green Gables, or something like that?

2) I know I raved about the illustrations. But it can be a hard thing to capture characters we love in drawings. Matthew and Marilla were a little off for me. Matthew's long grey hair and brown beard were a little weird. And Marilla... Ah well, just personal opinion here. No major criticism.

FINAL THOUGHTS
My rating is 4 Stars (out of 5) – I don't often review picture books, but when I saw this one was about Anne of Green Gables, I was inspired to request it. It'd be a wonderful introduction to the world of Anne! I'd recommend it for Grade 2-3. And really, for any fan of Anne of ANY age.

ANNE ARRIVES
By Kallie George
Illustrated By Abigal Halpin

This is a delightful children's edition of the classic Anne of Green Gables. I had never read this growing up and found it to be lovely. The illustrations are beautiful. I wish I had grandchildren who I could read this too. That might be pushing things too fast because my two son's are not old enough to get married.

When this book is published I will purchase many copies and give them out as gifts to the many wonderful teachers both my son's had. I will give one to the preschool teachers and to both of my son's Kindergarten teacher. I will also gift one to my son's first and second grade teacher. They both shared the same wonderful staff at our school district.

Thank you to Net Galley, Kallie George, Abigal Halpin and Tundra Publishing for providing me with my digital copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Lovely adaptation of the classic novel that stays true to the spirit and joy of the original and adds some beautifully lyrical illustrations. Good for readers not ready for the vocab/length of the original novel.

A sweet introduction to Anne of Green Gables for young readers. I like that it captured Anne's personality and outlook on life, while keeping the text simple. Obviously, I think that the original Anne is a must read but this is an accessible entry into an absolute classic. I also have to add that the artwork is absolutely beautiful!
