The title got my attention. It was funny and entertaining. I think it is a really good book for introduction.

This is an ok introduction to atheism. As the title suggests, this is geared for younger readers as a basic crash course on nonbelief. As someone who had a very religious upbringing, moving to nonbelief in my twenties, I was curious to see what advise Mr. Hitchcock would offer young doubters and whether I would give this book to any adolescent that I know.

The book covers all the general atheist bases: all fossils are transitional, evolution isn't a "theory" in the common vernacular sense, you can't prove a negative, etc. The work conveys these idea in a generally competent manner for the target demographic.

As for the cons, I don't like talking down to children, which this book seemed to do a bit. It also used some a bit outdated references, like talking about MTV, that seemed like the author was grasping at straws to be "cool" or "hip." Some of the mock conversations seem a bit weak as well. And it has some weak arguments like the always popular "Mohammed was a pedophile" argument.

Overall, I thought the book was alright, although it does have issues. It would probably work best if paired with a knowledgeable figure to actually discuss the issues that it raises.

Disbelief 101: A Young Person's Guide to Atheism by S. C. Hitchcock is a book I requested from NetGalley and the review is voluntary.
I found this book to be excellent in teaching how not to be indoctrinated not only in regards to religion but political views and commercial views by using logic and reasoning. It shows how to not look for "divine voices" but facts and logic to make choices.
I too was a deeply devoted as a young girl and then started questioning things. Being a logic and science person, nothing was adding up. My parents were always big church goers until I took a stand then they quit going too. Were they only going because that's what they thought they were suppose to do? I had studied the bible and it had too many inconsistencies. I studied other religions, same there. The author seemed to have the same experience. This is an interesting and well thought out book. Made for young adults and teens but anymore with doubts, this is your book.

This book was thought provoking and entertaining. The only fault I have with this is that the title makes it seem like it is only for young people, but I found it enjoyable and I am 40!
