If you were a fan of Anne growing up, this is a handy book to have around for bedtime. It's the perfect book to get your little one into the Anne story. While it may be simple, I think kids will love it. Especially if it begins the conversation with a parent about how much they love the Anne books by LM Montgomery.

How many goodnight books does one child need? Apparently a lot more if you ask the publishers of children's picture books. I'm not convinced that is true but here is another one nonetheless.

I grew up on Anne of Green Gables. My Nana lived in PEI (born and raised) and so Anne Shirley was a key part of my life and understanding her (as she lived far away from me). She sent me all the books at an early age and I got to visit PEI a few years ago; including a trip to the Anne house and Avonlea 'town'. What I discovered from my time revisiting Anne both in PEI and with this book is that Anne lives in a more innocent time than we do today. Her carefree nature is not as easy for me to accept in our current world of danger. Goodnight Anne with it's soft pastel colours and faded edges only enhanced that for me.

Geneviève Godbout has given us gorgeous illustrations in Goodnight Anne that feel like they might be drawn while on a cloud in a sweet dream. This is a lovely precedent to give a child right before bed; and so I love the feel of Goodnight Anne. But the writing of Kallie George is nothing new or special. There are references to Anne 'moments' that small children will not know and probably just brush off. This book is really a book for adults. Those who love Anne and just want more of her innocent nature. And while I'm sure that may make for a lovely moment between a parent and a child; I'm not convinced that this goodnight book is any better than the rest.

Perhaps if your child goes on to read Anne of Green Gables when they are older and remembers this goodnight book it could become a special thing. But otherwise this is just a trip down memory lane for the adults in a child's life. I would prefer to read engaging and insightful books to children that are a little less soft and more reflective of having courage, doing anything you want and finding your special place in the world. That said, if you're just looking to read about saying goodnight in a soft and feminine way then this one might be for you.

Please note: I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. This is an honest and unbiased review.

'Goodnight, Anne' written by Kallie George with illustrations by Genevieve Godbout is a bedtime storybook based on the book Anne of Green Gables. Younger readers may not be familiar with that book, but it still works as a gentle goodnight.

It's bedtime at Green Gables and Marilla is trying to get Anne Shirley to bed, but first Anne must say goodnight to the people and places she knows. So there are goodnights to Matthew and Diana. The snow queen and the Lake of Shining Waters are the fanciful things Anne Shirley likes. Marilla finally gets her to settle down, but not without a final goodnight from Anne.

The text is based on the first book, and readers familiar with the book will find a smile as they remember Matthew's kindness or Rachel Lynde's nosiness. The reason I chose to review this were the illustrations by Genevieve Godbout, who has become a favorite illustrator of mine over a short period of time. The illustrations are gentle and beautiful. I love the theme of butterflies that runs through the book, and I think Anne's spirit animal is a butterfly that flies erratically around.

I really love reading any book that revolves around Anne. This was such a nice story, another that I read with my daughter and found her enjoying. It is a great book to extend through a few bedtimes and great for both young and old readers.

What a wonderful revisit to the story of Anne of Green Gables or a younger listening audience. Beautiful illustrations, using some of the original verbiages from the books. Anne says goodnight to all her friends in Avonlea. Taking us to her favorite spots on the island she loves so dearly. Goodnight Anne.

Definitely for fans of Anne of Green Gables; I'm not sure parents who have not read the books of the Lucy Maud Montgomery would buy this title. The illustrations are BEAUTIFUL and dreamy and exactly as they should be. Each of the important characters of the first book are present. Though I would have liked a little more of Anne's voice, this is a perfectly serviceable good night book for the children of fans.

Typical of our favorite little chatterbox, Anne Shirley can't go to sleep until she says goodnight to everyone and thing she loves. The reader then gets a quick introduction to the important characters and things in Anne's life. She begins by saying goodnight and thanking Matthew, who is shy and sweet, for the special dress with puffed sleeves.

Each goodnight has reference to something in the novel and/or the character's traits. As an example, Gilbert is told goodnight but chastised for calling her Carrots. She goes through many of the characters including Diana her best friends, Miss Stacy her teacher, Mrs. Lynde the nosy neighbor, Bonny the geranium growing on the sill, and of course Matthew, Marilla, and Gilbert. Anne's sense of adventure and love is captured beautifully as she begins saying goodnight to things in the area where she lives.

When Marilla reminds Anne again that it's time to go to sleep, Anne says goodnight to Marilla with a reference to Marilla being sensible and strict, but it is made with love.

The illustrations are soft and flow beautifully with the text.

My Thoughts

What Concerned Me: For those not familiar with Anne of Green Gables, the story might not have quite the same meaning.

What I Liked Most: This is a sweet story, that brings back memories of many of the characters. The artwork, rendered in pastels and colored pencils, is a beautiful asset to the text.

Hopefully, this touching book will draw young readers to explore the classic story that has meant so much to many around the world.

This book is like Goodnight Moon only with an Anne of Green Gables theme. Parents/grandparents who loved Anne of Green Gables growing up may enjoy reading this book to their children at bedtime! It's a very sweet book.

This picture book captures the whimsical nature of the original book and of the character Anne Shirley as she says good night to all the people and places we love in Anne of Green Gables. Both the text and illustrations were excellent. I'm not sure young readers unfamiliar with the main story will understand all the references, but lovers of the series will love this one. I received an advance reading copy through NetGalley with an unbiased review expected.

Similar to Goodnight Moon, Anne (Shirley) wishes goodnight to everyone, and a few things, she knows and loves. Lovely illustrations, beautiful colors, and a charming story based off the Anne of Green Gables books.

My only drawback is that it is not rhyming, which I don't mind in above itself, but the way it is written would have lent itself very well to that format. It would throw me off that it wasn't rhyming, which was a pity.

"Goodnight, Anne" sparked nostalgia of one of my most cherished childhood books - "Anne of Green Gables" by L.M. Montgomery. As I read this story to my 4 year old daughter it brought to mind all of the characters and settings from this classic book. What I liked most about this book was that Anne was praying for all of the people in her life in the same way I have taught my own children to pray each night. Not only does she pray for her caretakers (Matthew and Marilla), her friend, teacher, and her favorite things but she also includes people that have upset her in the past like Gilbert and Mrs. Rachel Lynde. I think praying like this sets a good message for children that there are many types of prayer such as prayers of thankfulness and prayers of forgiveness. This series is a wonderful way to introduce little ones to the world of Avonlea before they are able to experience the chapter books on their own. This is the second book that I've read in the series with my daughter and already she has an invested interest in discovering what might happen next to Anne. Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of this book.

Same author as the new 'Anne of Green Gables' inspired "Anne Arrives" (a book for slightly older readers than this picture book) . . . beautiful, magical and soft illustrations and a great addition to 'bedtime' collections and storytimes.

I was expecting this to be a continuation of the early chapter book retelling of Anne of Green Gables that I started last week. However, I was nicely surprised that it’s a bedtime story. It has Anne saying goodnight to the various characters both human and not. It has great artwork and maintains the spirit of Green Gables, if not the story.

This is the perfect introduction to Anne of Green Gables for little readers in the form of a good night book. Anne has to say good night to her favorite things like Marilla, Matthew and my favorite The Lake of Shining Waters. The illustrations are just lovely and will catch the eye of any little reader.

A new perfect bedtime story to add to your collection: Goodnight Anne by Kallie George and Genevieve Godbout. I have already preordered this book and cannot wait to give it to my little red head for Christmas.

A lovely little tale filled with all the important characters in Anne’s life with the most wistful and dreamy illustrations you can imagine. Genevieve Godbout brings Anne’s world to life. She perfectly captures all the people and things so important to Anne and her life at Green Gables. Not only is the story lovely and sweet and perfect for lulling your little one into a happy dream-filled sleep, the illustrations perfectly match to tone of the story and will only help to whisk your child off to dreamland. Goodnight Anne is a fantastic fist peek into the world Lucy Maud Montgomery created so many years ago through her Anne of Green Gables stories. I’m sure she would be happy to know Kallie George was taking her stories and making them accessible to even younger readers, so parents can pass along their love for the series in an age appropriate way. Kallie George is sure to inspire the next generation of Anne fans and will keep the work of Lucy Maud Montgomery alive and fresh for the next generation.

A sweet goodnight book inspired by Anne of Green Gables. Before going to bed, an ever spunky and creative Anne must say goodnight to all her friends and things she loves in life, including Matthew and Marilla, Diana, Gilbert and even the Lake of Shining Waters. A great introduction to Anne for little readers!

The best part of this book is the illustrations. I think the book would be much more meaningful to an adult who loves Anne of Green Gables than as an introduction to her for young children but it is a sweet picture book nonetheless.

I had never understood the appeal of Goodnight, Moon. That is, until I read this Anne of Green Gables inspired version. Not only are the illustrations lovely, but the words will warm the hearts of anyone who considers Anne Shirley a kindred spirit.

I absolutely loved this book. It is a perfect bedtime story featuring that beloved red-head, Anne Shirley. Anne tells Marilla that she can not go to sleep until she says goodnight to all the things she loves. As she says goodnight, she gives a peak into the stories that many have read and loved over the years. She includes: Matthew and Marilla her new family members, Diana her best friend, Miss Stacy her teacher, Gilbert the boy who gives her grief at school, and the area she lives in. The text is beautiful and poetic.

This charming book is a perfect introduction to Canadian author L.M. Montgomery's famous series. The illustrations are beautiful and rich and draw you into the story. They are vintage type illustration that I have come to expect from illustrator Geneviève Godbout. This is an amazing bedtime story that I will read to my granddaughter over and over. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book to read.
