As the author states in the preface, after Gandhi’s death, all of his personal papers and letters were collected by Pyarelal Nayar, his personal secretary at that time, from the ashram in Sevagram, and taken to Delhi.

For thirty years, Nayar attempted to write a biography on the life of Gandhi. Upon his death in 1982, his sister, Dr. Sushila Nayar, tried unsuccessfully to complete the project. After her death, in 2000, the thousands of documents became available to researchers for the first time, transferred to the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library.

This may be the most comprehensive book ever written on Gandhi’s life, covering the period following his return to India after living for decades in South Africa. After literally years of research, Guha has published this amazing all-encompassing story of one of the greatest men of the modern era. Nothing in this book is sugar-coated, the author presents Gandhi as a man as well as a visionary. It is also an historical account of India’s independence, which is both tragic, and emotional. Prepare to be deeply moved; you will not look at the world in the same manner after reading this. An excellent work of literature, I most highly recommend this book.
