I received an ARC of this novel from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Intense novel about family, friendship, and integrity. Sad, but satisfying ending.

I love Viveca Sten's book and I love the Sandhamn series.
This instalment's as good as the other and was a very interesting and enjoyable read.
I loved the descriptions of the celebrations of Midsummer, the evolution of the characters, and the general atmosphere of the book.
Highly recommended!
Many thanks to AmazonCrossing and Netgalley for this ARC

This was an enjoyable read; filled with mystery and suspense. The storyline kept the reader turning the pages to discover what happens next. This is a book that I would recommend to all.

This is the newest in the Nora Linde series, set in Sweden on the Sahmamn archipelago. Stein does a wonderful job exploring the Midsommer Night murder of Victor, a young Swedish man of wealthy background. Suspects include his best friend, his girlfriend, and any of the myriad revelers on the island.
The novel is very captivating, and evokes the Swedish island atmosphere.

I like the way Viveca changed each of the key points in the story. She had Nora and Jonas progressing love affair take a back seat when Wilma said she hated Nora. Thomas had three to four people involved in the death of Victor and it was an emotional field day in finding all the key points in solving the case. Everything was playing into this case and nothing was the actual answer to solving it. It was the end of school and everyone was drinking and partying to the max. The drug pushers were there on the Island and all the underage people were drinking and following their older siblings around on different boats. Nora and her boys were not partaking in the festivities at all, but ended up picking up some underage girls as a service to her ex's mother. Wilma ended up lost and refused to call her father, Jonas. There's a whole lot of action that I didn't explain so you can read this story and find out about Nora's ex at the end of the story. I'm in overload now thinking about it, I gave it 5 stars because of Viveca's writing. What's her next book going to be.

Midsummer holiday on Sandhamn Island attracts young people from Stockholm and the nearby islands to drink and party. It is every parent’s nightmare when fourteen year old Wilma fails to return home after meeting up with her friends. Wilma’s father Jonas searches frantically while his girlfriend Nora contacts her friend DI Thomas Andreason for help.

While walking his dog, a resident of Sandhamn discovers the body of one of the young revelers. While the crime scene is explored and the victim is examined, Viveca Sten manages to build the suspense by gradually revealing the identity of the victim. With the imminent departure of the Midsummer celebrants, it is a race against time to find witnesses and discover clues to the murderer’s identity. A break comes when a young girl who was found wandering under the influence of drugs and alcohol is tied to a group that had been partying and is now missing one of their members.

Drugs, disagreements among friends, broken relationships and Sten’s use of misdirection provides an entertaining entry in the growing list of Scandinavian thrillers. This is the fifth book in the Sandhamn murder series. While it can be read as a stand-alone, it puts Viveca Sten on my must-read list of Scandinavian authors.

This is a crazy, great novel that follows the police investigation of a murder on a resort island on the Midsummer night when teens flock to over indulge and trouble brews. The hard work of the police plays against teens with their stories of the night to hide-stories of drunkenness, of love gone wrong, of humiliation and of embarrassment. The stories they harbor tell the tale of a night gone wrong, horribly wrong and of parents granting too much leeway and freedom to young teens.

Jonas, a divorced father, has custody of his 14 year old daughter for the Midsummer holiday. Apparently, all of the teens are partying, Daddy, she begs, and she gets him to agree to let her go out with a 1 AM curfew. But 1 AM passes, and Wilma does not return. Her phone is off, and her father is frantic. There are quite a few wealthy and seemingly very spoiled teens out, drinking, and partying, but everything changes when one is found dead the next day. Is it murder? Are drugs involved? Another great Nordic noir novel from Viveca Sten, excellently translated by Marlaine Delargy.

Midsummer's Eve on Sandhamn annually attracts all kinds of visitors who celebrate the longest day of the year by drinking and carousing. The event is endured by inhabitants and police.

Nora Linde's life is complicated when her new boyfriend's daughter doesn't come home after a night of celebrating. In addition to that worry, she is asked to take in two teenage girls who were found lost and confused after a night of drinking.

When the body of the young man is discovered, Thomas Andreasson and his partner Margit are called in to investigate.

I've enjoyed all of Viveca Sten's previous books, and although this one is not bad, for some reason I wasn't as engaged with the plot.

Both Nora and Thomas are interesting, intelligent, and compassionate characters, and I was happy to see a little take-down of the mother-in-law and to see ex-husband Henrik behave reasonably.

Read in July; blog review scheduled for Aug. 20.

I read book one in this series and then discovered this was book 5. Not a problem, though, as it stood by itself. Moved more quickly than the first book, too, though at first the multiple points of view were tough to follow. But overall I really enjoyed it.

4 stars

Midsummer’s Eve is a wild night on Sandhamn. Visitors come from all the other islands to party and gave a good time. Mostly it’s young people, kids really, that arrive on boats and act outrageously – and get very drunk. Wilma, Jonas Skold’s fourteen-year old daughter is determined to take part in the celebrations. She wants to meet up with some friends and stealing two bottles of wine from the refrigerator, she begs her rather lenient father to stay out until 2 a.m. She has a major crush on one of the boys.

During the evening Wilma becomes very drunk and is separated from her friends. She wanders helplessly drunk around the beach looking for her friends. Meanwhile a couple of other girls in her group get lost as well. One is found by the police, the other come to the police liaison building looking for her friend. They are reunited. Nora Linde takes them in. Meanwhile Wilma has long missed her deadline for being home and Jonas and Nora are very worried.

A young boy’s body in found on the beach. He has been bludgeoned to death. He is Victor Ekengreen, another one of the group. Thomas Andreasson is called over to lead the murder investigation. His partner, Margit follows later.

When the interviews begin, the police strongly suspect Tobbe, Victor’s best friend. Slowly the truth is almost dragged out of the teenagers. When Wilma is finally found, Jonas waits almost three days to question her. She reluctantly tells her story. Jonas realizes that she may be a witness to what happened with Victor. He calls Thomas to report it.

This book takes the reader on many paths: the teenagers’ stories, teenage angst, competition, drug and alcohol abuse, lying to one’s parents, and the high price of revenge.

This is a good book. I have read all of Viveca Sten’s novels, and I like this one right up there with the others. Nora is a great character, as is Thomas. Ms. Sten’s books are well written, plotted and translated.
The island of Sandhamn sounds beautiful. I feel like I am on vacation every time I read one of Ms. Sten’s books.

I want to thank NetGalley and AmazonCrossing for forwarding to me a copy of this good book to read, enjoy and review.

This is the first of the "Sandhamm Murders" books I have read. I enjoyed the mystery and the way the events affected the relationship between Nora Linde and her new boyfriend, however there were elements to the story which took I felt were unconvincing. It was interesting enough to make me want to try other books in the series though. If you could give half stars I would have rated this 3 & 1/2.

Solid addition to the Sandhamn series, interesting shift to the lives of teens and the influence of alcohol and drugs on the celebration of Midsummer and life in the archipelago.

Thank you NetGalley and Amazon Crossing for the eARC.
I have read all of the Nora Linde books and enjoyed them a lot. But this book is probably my least favorite.
On Sandhamn Nora and her new boyfriend Jonas are getting ready for Midsummer's Eve, probably the biggest party of the year for Sweden. Jonas' daughter is meeting friends and talks her dad into letting her stay out till 1:00 a.m. When she doesn't show up, Jonas and Nora spend all night frantically looking for her. In the meantime the body of a teenager
is found, and it looks like murder. Thomas, a police officer and Nora's best friend, starts an arduous search for the killer...could it be his girlfriend or one of his friends?
It was difficult for me to feel anything for the teenage characters, they all seemed spoiled brats and their parents way too lenient, thinking spending money on their privileged kids was the easy way out.
The ending did leave me wanting to read the next in the series, as I like Nora a lot and want very much for her to be happy.

When several teenagers go missing in a vacation town, with one eventually turning up dead, it’s up to Detective Thomas and his fellow police officers to piece together what happened. Viveca Sten crafts an interesting crime drama where the pieces don’t fall into place until the very end.

It took me about ten chapters until I felt truly pulled in (they’re short chapters) but once I was, I couldn’t put it down. The pacing was quick, switching from character to character and scene to scene, and I enjoyed the buildup to who was dead. A lot of authors don’t allow for that. This way you actually get to know the other characters and build a level of connection to them so when it’s revealed that their loved one is dead, there’s more weight and substance there.

I have one minor gripe and it may be more a pet peeve than anything negative. There are very few things, in real life and in books, that annoy me more than people jumping to conclusions. Watching the police and the victim’s father do just that, I couldn’t help but get a little detached from the story. I ultimately got my satisfying ending though so I didn’t let it bother me too much.

Overall an enjoyable summer read, and I have to give props to the translator as well. I don’t speak Swedish so I can’t compare the English to the original, but everything felt cohesive and of the same voice throughout the story.

Crime becomes personal for Nora Linde when her boyfriend’ daughter is one of several young women who disappear from Midsummers Eve celebrations. With one person dead, it’s clear there’s no time to waste. Sten is one of Nordic Noirs rising stars and this book cements her place in the genre
