This is a nice introduction to realism in art. It will be even more effective if read with other art books, and then students can take turns identifying styles in art, either on a field trip to an art museum or in an art book/on a computer.

This short book is part of a series on art movements. Although it is written for children, adults can learn from this book as well. Realism is defined, its influences are explored, important artists are mentioned and there are a number of reproductions, all of which are identified at the back of the book. The illustrations are appealing and this short work is a wonderful way for budding artists to learn some art history.
Thanks for this one NetGalley and the publisher.

A well illustrated primer for the very young to realist art – that from Victorian times that disengaged with the high-brow subject and showed real, earthy working types – but even the very young will recognise this as a very repetitive text. I think the impetus to try it yourself could have been stronger too. Three stars, but mostly for the chosen examples and layout.

FIve stars. An impressive, engaging, and educational book for young children—budding artists or not. Basic concepts of the Realism genre are discussed in easy-to-understand language—subject matter (daily life, peasants and simple folk rather than the elites) and color (earthy and often drab tones). Also discussed are a few famous artists of this genre. Many sample works are featured. The back of the book contains an index of paintings shown along with a glossary of several words that might be difficult for an early reader to understand. These words were featured in blue, bold text in the earlier part of the book. A valuable resource.
