This is the 2nd book I have read by this author that I have not loved. It is a good book but I just had a hard time getting into it. I think it is the subject matter. It also seemed slowed starting! It was very clean and had nothing I didn’t approve of.

I am really and truly going to go against the flow here. But this was a dnf for me. I wanted to love this one for many reasons, the location (basically my backyard), being Canadian I grab HF whenever I get the opportunity and this one sounded great. It's about the war of 1812 and unfortunately, once the talk of atoms and chemicals began I lost interest. I felt it was out of character (sorry to sound blunt) and disrupted the flow.

Jennifer Moore does a terrific job of transporting me back in into history. I have not studied the war of 1812 much and certainly not from the perspective of the Canadians. This really drew me in. I enjoyed the strong characters and their perspectives on the war. There are some really terrific secondary characters too. Abigale and Emmet have strong convictions and don’t choose the easy road. I enjoyed watching them overcome obstacles and grow as individuals and in their relationship.

I am very much in the minority when it comes to My Dearest Enemy. Most readers loved the time they spent with this book but I struggled beginning to end with the novel.

The characters struck me as cliched and their romance formulaic. Nothing about this story jumped from the page and I ultimately didn't care much for the story.

This was not only a beautiful blend of fact and fiction, but also a good reflection of the feelings on both sides of the conflict.
The author used clever ways of transitioning between chapters and topics. She was able to balance between the heavy, the chemistry and the light making the story all those things, yet not too much.
Near the end when the two characters separate I was unclear about the split. The author did a great job of showing the respective characters inner thoughts, but they never really expressed them to each other. I was left feeling odd about the whole exchange and confused on why they hadn't actually communicated with each other. Their, I'm staying and you're leaving and there's no middle ground, was disconcerting.
I appreciated the conversation between Emmett and his sister that cleared up his lack of understanding of her being needed and wanted. It gave a good resolution to the characters she'd created, but I feel like the conflict could have still been there and the split still happened but with a little more communication to not leave the reader confused and at odds with the story.
The rest of romance and the conflict the war created was just the right about of sweetness and adventure.

My Dearest Enemy by Jennifer Moore
Actual rating 2.5 stars

I thought for sure when I began reading this book it would become an all time favorite. This however was the not case. While this book was ok it was nothing extraordinary or amazing. The characters were ok but they were not original, instead they were very cliche. Not to mention that I had some issues with the overall plot.

My biggest issue with this book may seem rather odd but I thought the fact that a young woman was left alone by herself while her male family members were off to war did not sit well with me. During this time in history a young woman would never be left alone by herself. If her male family members were to leave the woman would be taken to live with relatives and neighbors would take care of the farm. My other issue was how fast the two main characters fell in love. If a random soldier appeared in my barn while I was by myself I can guarantee you I would not take time to notice how attractive he is. Also the fact that they are from opposing side and fell in love was a unbelievable. While I am not saying falling in love with someone from a different background is impossible the way that relationship blossomed seemed a little far fetched. The characters of this novel were your typical romance characters. Abigail was a strong independent woman with ambitions and goals that were advanced for her time. The Captain was the handsome, loyal male character who broods over doing the morally right thing.

Overall this book just was not for me. I thought the plot was average and the characters were cliche. With that being said I think for the right group this book may be perfect.

I absolutely thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It was full of suspense and danger and kindness and romance.

Abigail Tidwell lived on a farm in Ontario, Canada. Her brother, Isaac, and her father were at war against the cursed Americans. She was weary of the war and wanted her brother and father to come home but she continued to take care of the needs of the farm alone. She was surprised to find an American soldier who had been seriously injured taking refuge in her barn. She tended to his wounds and cared for his needs. She didn't trust him but she was a healer and even though he was an American, she felt compelled to care for him. When part of his regiment found him and released him, she was taken along in order to help another soldier who had been seriously injured in a battle with the redcoats and indians.

During the time she spent with these Americans, she learned that they were good men and she considered them less and less as the enemy. Especially, when they were captured and was assisting with the injuries of all the soldiers, on both sides of the conflict. She began to see that some of the British soldiers were evil and not good men or men of integrity.

As her feelings began to grow towards Emmett Prescott, the soldier she found in her barn, she wanted to make sure he was safe and unharmed. This saga takes her to several locations to tend to the soldier's wounds and to try and keep Emmett and the other men she had come to care for safe. When she learned of a plot against Emmett's life, she acted rashly and endangered her own life in the process. Would she be able to escape a traitor's noose? Would she been found guilty of treason or would her efforts be seen for what they were, an effort to save an innocent man?

This is not the first book I have read by this author and I am sure it will not be the last. She weaves such a beautiful story where you feel the emotions of the characters in the story. The story is a clean story without sex or foul language, one that could be recommended to anyone enjoys a wonderful story with a happy ending.

I was given a arc copy of this book by NetGalley to read and I willingly offer my review of this terrific book. I liked it so well that I bought the book, as well.

I absolutely loved this book. I thought it was so well written and I really enjoyed the characters.

Abigail Tidwell is the daughter of a doctor who has been called to help the British troops and her older brother is a soldier in the British army as well. Abigail has been left at home to manage the home and all of the daily chores. She is resentful to the Americans for the war that has taken away her family temporarily. As she is cursing the Americans, she finds an injured soldier in her barn. She treats him for severe injuries but keeps him tied up. That solder is Captain Emmett Prescott.

As Abigail and Emmett get to know each other, she begins to trust him and she follows him back to his small troop of soldiers to tend to an injured American soldier. The plan they agreed on was that Abigail would tend to the injuries of the soldier then they would deliver her to her father. What was not planned was that Abigail and Emmett would fall in love. They also did not plan to see the British launch an attack that would kill Emmett's large troop that was stationed several days away. Emmett leaves Abigail in the safe hands of his soldiers and he goes to warn the troop of impending attack.

When Emmett returns to his troop he is able to warn them but he is taken captive by the British. But when he sees something he is not supposed to see, he finds himself and those he cares about in danger.

My Dearest Enemy was romantic, suspenseful and action packed. I highly recommend it. I received this ARC and this is my honest feedback.

My Dearest Enemy was an okay read for me. The story is short and a little too slow for me than I like.
I give My Dearest Enemy three stars.

What Happens When Two People from Opposing Sides of a War Fall in Love?

Set in Ontario during the War of 1812 this short romance novel, My Dearest Enemy, by Jennifer Moore highlights both a passionate romance and the futility of war.

Abigail is a colonial Upper Canadian woman who is ahead of her time, trained to be a healer by her physician father, her hobby is rock collecting and she capably runs the family farm while her father and brother are otherwise engaged in the War of 1812. Circumstances brought about by war lead to her housing and tending to a handsome American Captain. Despite representing opposing sides of the conflict, they soon fall hopelessly in love. Their adventures lead them south so she saves can doctor a colleague of Emmett, then work in the hospital after the Battle of Stony Creek.

Moore has definitely done her historical research and has accurately recounted the events of the War of 1812, the social mores of the time and the lifestyle of the people. This reviewer appreciates that Moore evoked a balanced picture of Aboriginals. Although some tribes were willing to participate in scalping the white man, other tribes were compassionate and accepted the white man peacefully.

Because I live in Ontario, where the majority of this novel takes place I do see one major flaw with the story. Winters here are brutal! Even with modern fabrics and technology surviving outdoors during our winters is a huge hardship. Although Moore describes the snow and biting cold her characters survive in rough made lean-tos, an ill man is wrapped only in a wool blanket for warmth and most of the time people go about with bare hands – yet never suffer from frost bite. So unrealistic! We have days upon end when skin will freeze upon exposure, our winter weather is never to be downplayed. Lives are lost every year when unfortunates freeze to death in snowbanks. To give Moore credit it is impossible to imagine how savage our winters are. I invite her to visit my Book club in February!

All that being said, true love conquers all and this tale is sure to warm the cockles of your heart.

I absolutely loved this story. When Abigail finds a US Captain in her barn, she ties him up before treating his wounds. When the rest of his company come looking for him, she reluctantly goes with them to heal another soldier. I love the way that Abigail and Emmett interact. Very well written characters.
I love the story line, the plot, the supporting characters-pretty much everything but the last 5 pages. The whole book is building to a climax between Abigail and the US Captain then BAM. It ends in less than 5 pages. I felt like the ending was too rushed to really be enjoyed.

"My Dearest Enemy" is an enjoyable, clean romance. Abigail makes for your common sweet and yet intelligent heroine that makes these stories what they are. Emmett is your usual dashing soldier with intelligent interests and a sense of duty. The romance is a little rushed at the beginning (the kiss seems to come out of nowhere), but overall it's a fun light hearted story. The characters are likeable, genuine and sweet. The story line is enjoyable with enough little turns to keep you interested without making you tense. If you like your stories to end with a wholesome happily ever after -- this is a good one for you!

This was a beautiful story!
I love the historical genre and this book was so well done! The historical part of the war was so well described that it felt so real. At the same time, this was a character driven story. The historical descriptio don't distract you from what's important: what the characters are living.
The story is set in 1812 in the Canadian territory of the British war. Abigail is alone at her house, her father and brother having left to support the war against the americans. Abigail resents the americans for stealing her only family...
So what a big surprise when she finds an injured and unconscious enemy soldier on her barn. What should she do?
She can't let him suffer and much less die... She's a doctor's daugther and knows some medical skills... But can she turn him in to the british authorities when he is healed?
Before she knows it, she is more involved than she imagined, trying to help another soldier of his regiment after Emmett is found by them. I won't spoil the story, but I'll just say it kept me totally engaged until the end, wanting to know what was going to happen to Emmett and Abigail and if they would survive (literally) and if that was the case, if their love would overcome such huge and tragic obstacles like being on the opposite side of war.
I definitely recommend this story ti anyone who likes historical romances. It has everything: adventure, sweet and clean romance, intrigue, and even some sense of humor.
Jennifer Moore is a wonderful author and this another of her great books, probably one of her best.

Abigail is a Canadian living during the War of 1812, and her father is many miles away helping the British medics since he is a skilled doctor. Her brother Isaac is also away commanding his regiment, so Abigail is alone at home. One day she finds an injured American soldier named Emmett in the barn, and she decides to treat his wounds even though she hates the American soldiers. A few days later, a couple of men from his regiment find him and enlist Abigail's help to treat another soldier. Soon Abigail finds herself on the run with the American soldiers, and over the course of time she falls in love with Emmett. Will Abigail get a chance to be with Emmett, or will the war leave her more alone than ever before?
I enjoyed this book very much. Once I got past the first couple of chapters, I couldn't put the book down until I found out what happened to the characters. One character in particular made my blood boil so much I kept clenching my teeth, which is a testament to Jennifer Moore's excellent writing and detailed descriptions. Though I thought Abigail and Emmett's relationship felt rushed and a bit like insta-love, I liked how in depth and realistic the description of their thoughts was. I thought there were a couple of plot areas left up in the air at the end, but I did enjoy the ending overall. There were a few things that happened in the book that aren't for the queasy since several doctoring procedures were described. I especially liked the way the author described the way a genuine relationship should be towards the end of the book. It's great advice for anyone, I think. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction.

4.5 stars for this latest book by one of my favorite authors. I love the cover and I wanted to read it since it's by Jennifer Moore. Sad to say I don't remember anything about the war of 1812 (high school American History was 44 long years ago), so I had to look up a map to see where the story was taking place.

Abigail Tidwell is solely responsible for taking care of her family's farm in Canada since her father and brother are away because of the war. She blames the Americans for her loneliness, and adversity. so imagine her surprise (and possible horror) to find one of the enemy lying badly wounded in her barn. American Army Captain Emmett Prescott doesn't remember much of the Indian attack upon his small group of men or how he came to be in Abigail's barn, but he knows he needs to get back to his men. Emmett gets Abigail to return with him to help one of his severely injured men, and as they spend time together on the journey there and at their makeshift campsite she finds herself attracted to the handsome Captain, even though he's the enemy.

Is it traitorous to have feelings for someone on the opposing side? How much can you do to help someone who's in need before you're considered a traitor to your country? Just because someone is considered the enemy does it make it wrong to help them?

Abigail is a strong female character for this time. "It seemed once her mind was made up, Abigail was the sort of person who did not alter her course." She's practically a doctor and is in to geology, which was really uncommon for women in the early 1800's. She may have blamed the Americans for her family being away but when she found Emmett badly wounded she didn't hesitate to help him by cleaning and stitching up his wounds, and feeding him. She also went with Emmett to help Barney's brother Luke, who was gravely ill because of a wound he sustained in the Indian attack.

I loved how Abigail helped Luke because Barney "asked politely". She helped others out of kindness even if there were her "enemy". I also liked Emmett and his small band of soldiers who took care of each other like family. You can tell Jennifer Moore does her research from all the details in the book describing the battles and the town.

Thank you NetGalley and Covenant Communications for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Oh my goodness, I absolutely ADORED this book! Jennifer Moore is a new author to me, and to my delight I quickly discovered that she and I are destined to be author/reader BFF's. What an incredibly talented author, and what a beautiful novel! I was thoroughly hooked on the fast-paced plot, and completely invested in the characters. The setting was described in enticing detail, the characters complex and developed. I loved the main characters...and thoroughly loathed one of them. An easy read that stays with you, long after the last page is turned.

Abigail lives on the Canadian side of the British War. Her father and brothers are off fighting the war and she is alone except for a neighbor checking on her once a week. Finding a wounded almost dead soldier in her barn she wonders what to do. Turn him in to authorities or nurse him back to health. Since her father is a doctor he taught her doctoring skills and her conscience will not allow her to leave a human being to suffer. This soldier is an American and because of them her father and brothers are off fighting this terrible war. The soldier is her enemy, right? Is the enemy always wrong and the bad guy? Lives become entangled and she and her soldier see each other for compassionate souls rather than enemies now. I did enjoy how the author gave us a look inside the couple's minds as we could see them as decent humans with worries, insecurities, passions for life rather than sparring enemies. It was interesting reading about the other side of the coin in this book.

The author gave a great view of the two contrasting views during the war. I loved that she didn't force an option but offered various ones. The characters were great, though sometimes a little too great or without faults. Overall, a great read that offers new perspectives.

I was very pleased to receive an e-copy of this from #NetGalley to read and review. The opinions expressed are all my own.

I have read many books that have been written about war, but not so many written about the War of 1812 and particularly focusing on a character who lives in Canada.

Abigail Tidwell is living alone while her father and brother are off at war. She has animals to care for, a house to keep and a neighbour who drops in to check on her every so often. She is known as a healer and midwife who has learned much from time spent with her doctor father. Abigail has no fondness for any Americans as they are responsable for the fighting going on so close to home One morning she discovers a badly wounded American officer in her barn and although she fears him (and ties him up) she cares for his wounds and gradually gets to know him and respect him. When his fellow soldiers arrive on scene, Abigail faces choices that she never dreamed she would have to make. She is not your typical woman of the time but has a huge amount of inner strength and a strong sense of what is right. This leads her to head out where her skills are needed the most - among the wounded. Along the way she learns that not all on her side are honourable and trustworthy and not all Americans are enemies.

I was drawn into this story from the very beginning.I'm a retired nurse and perhaps that made it easier for me to identify with Abigail. I liked her character. She was quirky. She loved things that were not in that time considered to be of great interest to women and cared little for superficial things. When she met Captain Emmett Prescott, I liked him too though at times he needed to try harder to understand where Abigail was coming from. It was fun to watch their relationship progress throughout the book

Clearly the author spent a lot of time researching the time period and I was impressed with how much history made it's way into the story. This was a book that made me start googling to learn more and check out information for myself. Many books that I read growing up would not be considered politically correct by today's standard. This book featured tales of Indians scalping soldiers and that was what I ended up searching out online. I was interested to find out that during the War of 1812 both armies and Indians resorted to the practice of scalping. Apparently it first started when an American scalped an Indian and the Indians (I am using that term as that was what would have been used at that time) in retaliation scalped some soldiers in return. The idea of scalping was so horrifying that it had a big impact on the morale of the soldiers and was used as a tool of warfare in that respect.

Yes this book is a romance but even if you aren't a fan of romances, this book has so much more to offer - especially if you love history. I look forward to more books by this author that focus on the war of 1812.

Thank you net galley and covenant communications for an advanced reader copy of this novel. This is my fifth piece by Jennifer Moore that I have read and she continues to wow me! This was a delightful clean historical romance set during the war of 1812 in Ontario. Abigail, main character, has medical skills and saved the life of American soldier, Emmett. The two face many challenges of war in enemy territory and fall in love in the process. The story developed nicely with good speed and character development. I was cheering for Abigail and Emmett. I was hoping for an epilogue to wrap the story up for Abigail's brother and Dad as well as Emmett's sister but alas, no epilogue. I will gladly recommend anything by this author and publisher! This tingle to your toes clean historical romance gets 5 stars!!!!!
