What a fun ride. Ellie Kemper relates her life story in a way that makes you feel that you are in her kitchen, chatting over coffee. I cannot wait to read her follow up to “My Squirrel Days”. Her refreshing, witty take on the ordinary leaves you wanting for more. Thanks for inviting me in Ellie (next time I will bring the muffins...)

My Squirrel Days by Ellie Kemper is a great book written by a very funny and quirky actress and comedian. Now let me say that while I expected more about her struggles getting into television, I still really enjoyed what I read. There were complicated parts that seemed hard for me to read and were slow also and then there were parts that had me laughing out loud and causing everyone to look at me as though I was crazy. I loved Ellie while she was on Office and when I heard this book was coming out, I was very excited. Some of the things that are written have been written before by others who have experienced the same thing that Kemper has. I guess I just wish there were more about her struggles in life and what made he who she is. So with that I say for me it is a 4 Star ⭐️ out of 5.
Thank you to netgalley as well as the author for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review.

The whole time I was reading this I kept asking "Why was this even written?" Kemper is a quirky actress but is that enough to warrant an entire book? She does not have a compelling story and no true struggles (at least that she speaks of). This resulted in a book of hyper quirkiness that was constantly attempting to be funny...and failing. And yes, her personality does shine through but it is more exhausting than anything else. Honestly the entire book was rather boring to me as a reader and I spent a good amount of time yawning rather than laughing.
But seriously, why was this written?

Ellie Kemper keeps alive the spirit she gives us on screen. I found myself smiling, feeling twangs of my own nostalgia, through hers.
Kemper sheds light on the everyday moments in Hollywood.
Between takes and auditions, what an actors life is like on and off set, and what it’s like to have a job so rare not many can relate.
I greatly enjoyed reading about her childhood, the moments of wild thoughtfulness that lead to a bit of chaos. Inspiringly honest moments of Childhood Ellie are a nice reminder of the steps we take as humans, learning as we grow, figuring out our dreams, and going after them.
This book made me love Ellie Kemper
even more!
Her spirit jumps off the pages, you can almost hear her telling the stories.
“My Squirrel Days” is a thoughtfully written, personal book. I am very glad I read it, and feel honored to have received an advanced readers copy!
I highly recommend this wonderfully enjoyable read!
Thank you Scribner, Simon & Schuster & NetGalley for the Advanced Readers Copy! And Ellie Kemper for writing this wonderful work!

I absolutely love Ellie Kemper, but I just can’t get through this book. I’ve tried three times. It’s just not my thing.

Thank you NetGalley, Scribner books, and Simon & Schuster for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of My Squirrel Days.
Oh Ellie Kemper is such a joy! I became a fan while watching her on The Office, and have continued to enjoy her work on The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. My Squirrel Days had me laughing from start to finish. Ellie's charm and wit really shines through this book!
As a fellow St. Louisan, I loved hearing the stories of growing up in St.Louis! Her journey to where she is now is interesting and inspiring.
I really enjoyed the way the book was formatted. I loved that she broke down her story into different sides of herself, but still kept everything in order. To often i read memoirs, where the author is all over the place. It makes it difficult to connect with their story. This was very well done!
The entire book was lighthearted and funny. I really enjoyed getting to know Ellie Kemper! I cannot wait to see what she does next.

I loved Ellie Kemper in The Office. So, I was thrilled to read her quirky book. Adorable as she is, this book was a perfect representation of her personality.

My Squirrel Days is everything you’ve come to expect from Ellie Kemper. Relentlessly upbeat, she chronicles her life in a series of essays — from childhood living-room musical productions to her starring role in The Office to her life-imitating-art experience as a bridesmaid. While the book was a quick and enjoyable read, it was fairly pedestrian for a celebrity memoir and not one I’ll dive into again.
Great memoirs serve two functions. First, they fascinate. Memoirs afford a glance into a life so different from my own that it’s hard to comprehend. My Squirrel Days is no exception, so it’s an enjoyable read, especially if you like Ellie’s brand of humor and have enjoyed other comedic memoirs.
Second, they inspire. Great memoirs demonstrate the author’s grit, determination, and resilience in the face of setbacks and failures. In doing so, they inspire me to persevere in my own struggles, even if the day-to-day inconveniences I deal with pale in comparison to the author’s own battles. Ellie’s narrative lacks these moments, so while I enjoyed reading it, I don’t expect it to stick around as one I’d recommend to friends or re-read when I need a pick me up.
Overall, enjoyable read without much substance. Pick it up expecting to learn about Ellie Kemper? You won’t be disappointed. Expect to be inspired by Ellie’s resilience and success? Save your book money.
Side Note: I read this on a Kindle, but it’s probably better enjoyed as an audio book. A substantial portion of Ellie’s jokes just don’t leap off the page. As a fan of The Office and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, I’m familiar with her brand of humor and could almost hear her in my head. Without her voice, you’re probably missing the jokes that make this book uniquely Ellie’s.

I really enjoyed this memoir. I was funny and gave me some insight to 'behind the scenes' of some of my favorite shows, The Office and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

Thank you NetGalley and Simon and Schuster for giving me the opportunity to review this book.
I loved Ellie in the Office but I just could not give her the same acclimates for being an author. I admire the fact that she tried but I failed to find her humor. Even going back other reviews in hopes of getting a different eye view, maybe I missed something.
I went back and read the book again attempting to give it a fair chance..
I apologize but Ellie I cannot give it a decent review. It lacks the ability to obtain my attention. The content just rattles on like a middle aged woman's diary. (less)

I received this copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I was familiar with Ellie Kemper from The Office, and because she is one of Mindy Kaling's friends (as mentioned in her book Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?) I was excited to see what My Squirrel Days had in store, and I wasn't disappointed. Ellie shares her life with her readers, from her childhood in Missouri to her work on The Office, Bridesmaids, and beyond. Each chapter can stand alone but are even better together. Reading it was like sitting down with a good friend and having a fun conversation together.

After watching Ellie Kemper on television, I had to read her autobiography to see if she was as funny off the tube as on. She is! From a young age, Ellie kept her family entertained while keeping her eye directly on the prize. If talking to squirrels can be considered a prize! Ellie's stories of her ability to stumble through life and keep moving forward is not only funny, but a little bit inspiring. All the class clowns will see themselves in Ellie's life and hope to one day be as successful as she. My Squirrel Days made me smile for the rest of the day after finishing the book in 2 days.

Thanks @scribnerbooks for the ‘My Squirrel Days’ ARC!
If I had to describe this book in one word (or two), it would be ‘charmingly quirky’! Ellie Kemper writes this book with her usual candour which makes the reading insightful and lighthearted at the same time! It was an easy breezy read and I didn’t even realise when I finished the book!

I thoroughly enjoyed Ellie Kemper’s book! She’s just so cheerful, funny, and awkward...making her extremely relatable. I usually don’t enjoy celebrity memoirs but I loved this one due to her comical nature of telling various stories. If you enjoyed her character in The Office and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, you’ll enjoy this memoir! Thank you to Scribner and NetGalley for the advanced copy of this book. Publish Date: October 9, 2018.

I love Ellie Kemper, but I think I was looking for more from this book. While it was entertaining to read each of these stories with her voice in my head, it didn't make me laugh as much as I thought it would. I think most of it was due to the fact that I've already read quite a bit about UCB improv in Amy Poheler's book, so it seemed like variations on stories that I had heard before. I did love the way she continued to make jokes throughout the book about things that happened in earlier stories. It made everything more cohesive. Overall, it was a fun and quick read.

Let me start by saying I think Ellie Kemper is adorable. Funny, genuine, the type of person you want to be friends with. Also, I never watched The Office, nor The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (though the latter has been on my to-watch list forever.) When this book came up as an advanced read, I had to read it. I wasn’t disappointed.
The Ellie Kemper I’ve admired comes across loud and clear on the pages. She shares stories from childhood and adulthood that are sweet and comical. Stories that you can hear her telling in her own voice. I loved reading about her childhood creating plays that Ellie would force her best friend and sister to perform (have to admit, we used to be forced to do the same thing in my family.) Loved her stories about not being college’s greatest field hockey player, despite being her high school’s greatest. Especially loved the back story on auditioning for SNL.
I am not a huge fan of autobiographies or memoirs. The only ones that I gravitate toward are those written by funny people, because let’s face it, life is pretty grim already. No one needs anything else depressing in their lives. And celebrity memoirs often feel like pages of name dropping (or name hiding) and a window into “look how great I am.” Comedians tend to be more self-deprecating and honest.
So if you are in for a good read, not pee your pants funny, but humorous and honest, pick this one up. Can be read really quickly and in short bursts. Ellie is fun. I would love to have bike 12 right next to Ellie in the next Rooster SoulCycle class.

I was really thrilled to be approved to read this book... Ellie Kemper is one of my favorite actresses. I loved her on The office and in Bridesmaids, and love her on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. That being said, I liked but didn’t love this book. It was funny in many places, but wasn’t as good as Tina Fey or Mindy Kalings books. It was an enjoyable read, and her spunky personality really shines through. I especially liked her background stories about The office and Kimmy Schmidt. Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley. Love you Ellie!

MY SQUIRREL DAYS, by Ellie Kemper, is a delightful collection of Ellie's musings about growing up, struggling as a young actress, and finally feeling such bliss at becoming successful as well as becoming a mother.
This book was exactly (which is rarely the case) what I thought it would be and wanted it to be. Ellie's writing is spirited, intelligence, whimsical, and downright funny. It is clear through this book that despite her happy, bubbly exterior that seems to never have a sad thought, that inside Ellie has smart, anxious and driven energy that has guided her life. Each chapter tells of a story in Ellie's past, from young girl to just a couple of years ago, and has a certain amount of sarcasm and a lot of self-deprecation, in a hilarious style that reminds me of David Letterman. And by the way, her passage about being on Late Night with David Letterman is a highlight of the book.
Ellie Kemper has a unique wit, and in MY SQUIRREL DAYS, her style and humor is on full display. I challenge anyone who reads this book to not laugh out loud constantly.

Sweet, funny and entertaining. I don't think I liked it quite as much as I enjoyed Tina Fey's or Mindy Kaling's books, but all in all I got what I wanted out of it. I enjoyed it and liked the glimpses of Ellie's personal and professional lives and how she came to be a success in such a difficult industry. I would read another book by her.

My Squirrel Days by Ellie Kemper is a humourous memoir by the actress who starred in the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and The Office. Her upbeat look at life and self deprecating jokes make her relatable and true to the reader. She talks about her family growing up, her relationship with her now husband, being a mom, and becoming a comedian & actress. Hilarious tidbits about celebrities she has come into contact with are a real treat. I've already recommended this book to everyone I know. Highly recommend!
