Wanted very much to love this, but simply didin't. Sloppy world building, poorly constructed sentences, jumpy plot. Just not my cup of tea.

As the world is on the brink of World War Three, suddenly wizards appear, destroying all of the world's nuclear weapons, and taking control of the world. Four of them take control of North America for only three years (or so they say). A social worker, Amanda, wins the position of Supreme Liaison between the ordinary people and the wizards, and finds herself torn in different directs as she starts to learn more about the wizards and their society and what they are really looking to do with the world.

A nice part of the novel is that every time I started to think 'that's a little ridiculous', the author threw in a little twist that made that ridiculous element make perfect sense. The wizards are supremely powerful, but seem immature, but there is a reason for that. They place arbitrary limits on the age of people applying to the Supreme Liaison position, and fill it through a process that seems more appropriate to a reality television show, but there's a reason for that.

I also appreciated the fact that there was no quick and easy fix at the end.

While not a perfect read, I do hope there will be a sequel, since the world has been completely altered in the end, and I'd like to see what happens next.

I got about 25% into this book and had to DNF. I was not able to connect with the world building or the characters

I was really impressed with this dystopian novel! I think it would be great as required reading in high school English, as it touches upon so many facets of society today, while remaining a fun read.

Unique world building. Promising Plot. But this book just don’t appeal to me. First is because of the writing style, it was a little bit messy ang hard to understand. I sometimes found myself re-reading some lines, and it would really annoy me so much that I just give up and move on. Second is the politics behind the story. And lastly, the pacing is inconsistent. There is also a very unromantic romance between the main character and one of the wizards. Overall, this book could be promising, it just have a lot of cons in it that will make you undecided whether to finish it or not.

Wizards Rising is a look at what would happen if wizards took over the political system (and all the other systems, too). I really enjoyed that there were several allusions to how infrastructure works, with clear nods to various cogs and levels of government, and I wish I could have seen more of the fallout from a super-powerful group taking control (I liked the interactions with the citizens, but I wanted more generalities of what was happening). I liked the ideas, I liked the characters, I even liked the implications, but I wanted more of what was going on outside the bubble we're shown, not just in 30-second sound bites, but in a nice overview from somewhere be it the narrator, a wizard, or a member of Amanda's family.

In all, 3.5 stars.
