Unfortunately, this novel fell short for me. I never really felt the connection between the hero and heroine as the story progressed. The writing was a little flat, and I wish there had been more danger or excitement.

Great romantic read with low drama. Fast paced novel with a great build world. Perfect read for an afternoon. Arc provided by Netgalley

I had a hard time with this one. I really wanted to like it but the book was just too boring and I could not keep myself interested. It was also really predictable, which isn’t always a bad thing but I just found I didn’t care for any of the main characters or their story.

Fiona Hartley is a kind-hearted young lady who seems prone to mishaps and accidents. It seems to deter men’s interest in her. She is an incredible artist and can often see past the façade many put on for appearances.

She loves her father and sister so much that she’s willing to risk so much to save them. Someone is blackmailing her. If she doesn’t pay up, a family secret will be revealed that will ruin Fiona’s younger sister, who is just coming into her own and quite eligible on the marriage mart.

How can she pay a blackmailer with no money? So she decides to marry in order to acquire the funds she needs. Upon her marriage, Fiona’s dowry will be paid out and she can pay the blackmailer! Fiona sets her sights on David Gray, Earl of Ravenport. Fiona has considered and eliminated a number of men of the ton and has finally settled on the Earl of Ravenport, carefully selected after he was kind to her after one of her mishaps at a ball.

Gray is in need of funds himself in order to renovate his crumbling home, called the Fortress. After receiving a written proposal from Fiona, which Gray has no intention of entertaining, he invites Fiona, her sister, and stepmother to stay at the Fortress for a week in hopes that it will scare Fiona away. But Fiona isn’t like the rest of the ladies of the ton and rises to the challenges set forth.

Gray inherited his earldom when he was barely double digits. He has endured a lot of trauma from childhood and then his parents’ deaths. Now he’s essentially penniless. He is a fairly cold person and has vowed to never love. Not again. Gray’s primary goal is to renovate the Fortress for his grandmother, who is losing her sight. He wants her to see it restored before she can no longer.

It’s a marriage of convenience for both Fiona and Gray, but Fiona is determined to turn it into a love match after a while. Gray is adamant that they won’t suit, but slowly warms to Fiona.

The one glaring issue I had with the entire plot is that the blackmailer selected Fiona as the target. She was an unmarried woman who didn’t have access to any actual funds. Why not select her father, the head of the house, business, and coiffers? The explanation that he was ill won’t deter a blackmailer who is bent on ruination.

FIRST EARL I SEE TONIGHT - Anna Bennett

#1 in the Debutante Diaries historical romance series

GREAT CHARACTERS - 4 stars

Plot - 4 stars - Fiona is being blackmailed, so she decides to marry in haste in order to get control of her dowry. The Earl of Ravenport, in need of funds, is her choice. But when they spend more time together, they realize that perhaps they are more attracted to each other than they expected.

Writing - 4 stars - This story began in a light-hearted way and continued throughout. I was caught up right from the first page, and I greatly enjoyed the witty banter and camaraderie that followed. The mystery kept my interest, and the romance was hot and romantic. The excerpts from Fiona's journal were cute and added fun and interest to the story, giving us a bit of a preview of what to expect in the upcoming chapter.

Characters - 4.5 stars - This is where the story shone for me. Fiona is talented and clever, but she's also a wallflower because of her clumsiness and directness. Ravenport is the consummate hero--tall, dark, and handsome. And he's intrigued by Fiona's character. They are both intelligent, and I enjoyed watching them match wits. I loved Fiona's artistic talent and enjoyed hearing more about it.

Title - 4 stars - A clever play on the common "wish upon a star" phrase.

Cover - 4.5 stars - A beautiful blend of deep blue and green jewel tones that really draws the eye.

Overall - 4 stars - What a pleasant and enjoyable romance! I liked the characters and was interested to see how they would resolve their issues (although their ultimate romantic success was never in doubt). The house party was an excellent vehicle to get to know the characters better, and the mystery deepened as time went on. I enjoyed hearing about Fiona's sketching since she sounds like a very intuitive and talented artist. This was a very good start to a new-to-me series, and I will definitely look for more in this series and by this author sooner rather than later.

This book was so entertaining. I was drawn into the story from the beginning and was involved until the end. The characters were complex and interesting. I found the story to be well paced and engrossing throughout the whole book. I was invested in the couple throughout the book and felt all the emotions through both the highs and lows of the story. The side characters were such an integral part of this story as well. This is the love story i needed to read at this time. If you want an entertaining and well written book this is it for you

I’m always on the hunt for the next great read. What a thrill it is to find a fabulous book and a phenomenal new author to follow. I am officially hooked on Anna Bennett and so thrilled to find her at the start of a new series. First Earl I See Tonight, the first in her Debutante Diaries series, wowed me, made me laugh, and broke my heart. Sometimes all in the same scene!
I adored Fiona and Gray. Anyone that loves their family as fiercely as these two did deserves their HEA. Who couldn’t help but fall in love with Fiona! She was witty, kind, fearless, and so optimistic. I loved each and every diary entry she made. And her first attempt at a kiss had me in tears. Despite his serious and brooding personality, I fell in love with Gray too. Like Fiona, I knew there was more to him than his aloof façade. He’d suffered a tragedy that few people could recover from so, of course, he was guarded. He was also determined, driven, kind, and loyal. I loved that the majority of the story took place in his crumbling manor house. Like The Fortress, Gray’s life was in crumbles. But Fiona and her unique way of seeing the world helped him to see what his life could be. Gave him hope.
There were many deliciously unique tender moments proving romance isn’t all about flowers and poetry. The added mystery of the blackmailer kept me turning the pages. And the twists and turns toward the end left me breathless.
I’m more than anxious for Lily and Sophie’s stories. These 3 girls are such a little Ya Ya Sisterhood group! I can’t wait to see what’s in store for them. Lily is such a romantic. Her history revealed in this book makes me want to know more about her. And I’m dying to see Lily and Fiona rebuild their relationship with their father. That stepmother needs to go!
If you’re looking for a new series to sweep you away, this is the perfect opportunity. You’ll fall in love with these witty, emotionally charged characters. Humor and powerful sexual chemistry abound in this book. You’ll quickly be hooked watching these two find their way to love.

Fiona - is in a pickle. Recently given an ultimatum in the form of blackmail, she has limited time in which to decide how to respond to the blackguard. Considering the sensitive information will ruin her sister, she has little choice but to concede to the payment demanded. An heiress of fairly new money, she has several options for advantageous matches she could make. But she wants to try and choose the best man possible for this unorthodox proposal. Satisfied she’s chosen wisely, she sets out to seal the deal. Except Gray is not a willing target. But the spark between them is undeniable and before too long, her plan to marry for convenience and access to her dowry has her heart on the line as well. Unwilling to tell Gray the entire truth, she provides as much information as is comfortable without compromising the damaging truth. Problematic, Gray is now demanding full disclosure despite his continued refusal to marry her. Fiona has reeled him in up to a point, but he’s still fighting what is plain to see. If she can’t trust him with her heart, can she really trust him with the full truth?

David Gray – Earl of Ravenport – recently jilted. Having absolutely no intention of falling to the charms of another heartless woman, he refuses to go along with Fiona’s scheme. However, she convinces him to at least take some time getting to know her prior to announcing a betrothal. Gray sees this as an opportunity. Since his crumbling estate sent his previous fiancé running for the hills, it should work wonders on Fiona. Plan in hand to end this debacle, he arranges a weeklong party at his home. Despite desperately needing funds to repair said home and holding the title of Earl that Fiona seeks, all he sees is red flags where the vixen is concerned. But the more time they spend together, the more she draws him in – quite literally. She finds beauty in places others never would or could. So much for the estate ending her scheme. Before too long, Gray has ferreted out most of the details surrounding Fiona’s rushed desire to marry quickly. But the blackmailer is most unexpected and just might be the final blow. Can Gray discover the truth, appropriately deal with the shocking revelation without compromising the Hartleys, and confront his deep emotions for Fiona without losing her in the process?

What a charming beginning to this whimsical series! Fiona comes from new money, her father very recently making his fortune. As the eldest sister and heiress, Fiona is expected to make an advantageous, titled match in order to strengthen the family name, which currently isn’t entirely accepted. The match is desired more by her stepmother than anyone, but Fiona has no real objection and understands the importance, so goes along with the expectation. But a blackmailer somehow discovers a dark family secret which would ruin the chances for not only Fiona’s sister at a good match but any chance of the family being welcomed into society, wealth notwithstanding. A talented artist, Fiona is accustomed to deciphering the character of people and decides on Gray for her husband. Convincing Gray of that, though, will be one heck of a feat to accomplish. Despite their fierce attraction, he is adamant that he will be unable to give her the kind of marriage she deserves. Utterly enchanting! Getting to know Fiona, Gray, and several other family members was a pleasure. This book not only gives a wonderful story of love breeching carefully constructed walls of protection but also set up what appears to be a fantastic series as the stories continue. I was lucky enough to obtain all three books in the series. While I did not get the first two installments read prior to release, I will have the third and final book in the series completed well before release day and I am looking forward to it immensely.

The perfect mix of everything expected within a beautifully crafted historical romance, Ms. Bennett easily moves toward recognition as one of the best in HR; at least by my estimation. Scheming, brooding, whit, passion … its all present and accounted for. For those of you who are fans of Amelia Grey and the Rakes of St. James series, you'll be sure to enjoy these delightful debutantes. Somewhat similar to the aforementioned series, yet altogether different, Fiona and Gray will effectively draw you into their world for a story of love rising above all with a dash of mystery. Fiona’s sister (Lily), best friend (Sophie) and Grey’s grandmother were breakthrough characters that added the perfect combination of insight and levity to this story; although Fiona and Gray have their own witty, sparring interludes as well. Together, Fiona, Lily, and Sophie determine that they must keep diaries of all of their advice to their future daughters based on their own passionate escapades and experiences with love throughout their seasons. Aptly named the Debutante Diaries, their adventures begin. While Fiona is definitely gifted as an artist, her entertaining musings within her diary are provided periodically throughout the book and are nothing short of divine. Icing to the cake if you will. Being an artist is obviously frowned upon by the ton as a suitable career, so only family is aware of her sketching hobby. When Gray sees her talent, even he cannot deny that it is something special and sets about to bring a bit of recognition of sorts. Ultimately, these two who were sure they could never create a love match become the perfect pair, balancing one another out, and falling madly in love. Definitely an HEA here! The attraction between Fiona and Gray is undeniable and their intimacy is quite passionate. Let’s just say that Gray is the opposite of selfish as a lover and Fiona has no issue returning the favor in due time. 😉 I’d also like to point out that this cover is everything! It shows the spunk and spirit that make up Fiona and captured the details perfectly: from the ball gown, to the Fortress in the distance, to the journal on the bench, and the bench itself. I adore covers that actually represent the stories within!

I was a bit shocked at the revelation of the blackmailer, although I did have a slight suspicion after a bit of time had passed. While I wasn’t entirely sure if my suspicion was correct, the identity of the scoundrel was unexpected in the grand scheme of things. Maybe just a bit disheartening though since things could have gone a completely different direction and possibly even provided another book in the series somehow. However, I was actually happy to see an author take the road less traveled in this instance even if the identity ended up being somewhat unbelievable. Actually, I’m a bit hung up on this detail now that I think about it. Yes, I was sure I had accurately identified the extortionist. But leading up to the reveal lacked in implicating clues. It was almost as if the author hadn’t fully committed to the idea of who the criminal would end up being and then just decided it would be Character X. I’m sure you’ll all see what I mean when you read the book yourselves. And this would be my only complaint for this book; the lack of incriminating evidence to support the actions of Character X. No matter the identity of the blackmailer, this book was engaging from start to finish. I am thrilled to have discovered another fantastic HR author whom I can rely on for quality time spent within her work. Ms. Bennett delivers all the feels between these pages and I cannot wait to continue on this exciting journey with characters I have come to enjoy immensely. I eagerly anticipate reading what’s in store for Lily in the subsequent book.

This was a really good read. Gray and Fiona have great chemistry. The damsel-in-distress moment put me off a little, but, overall, it was a fast-paced, well-written story and I will definitely keep an eye out for the next book in this series.

The First Earl I See Tonight by Anna Bennet is the first in her Debutante Diaries series. The love story is nice, though it’s not the strongest plot… I really loved her previous series (Wayward Wallflowers) and this book is just not as interesting as any of the books in that series.

David Gray, Earl of Ravenport, has recently been jilted by his fiancé because his home is in a state of disrepair. He is working on renovating the house, mostly for his beloved grandmother. Miss Fiona Hartley is desperate to get married as soon as possible so she can access her dowry in order to pay off a blackmailer, who knows a secret about her younger sister that will harm her if it gets out.

Gray invites Fiona to visit his estate as a way to scare her away from wanting to marry him – and some mild hijinks ensue… The plot isn’t very strong – the revelation of who is blackmailing Fiona doesn’t make a ton of sense and their isn’t a lot of chemistry between the two main characters. I did like Fiona a lot – she’s interesting, strong and determined to protect her family. Gray was a little less compelling…

This is book is fine to pass the time, but I don’t recommend it as highly as her previous books.

A stunning clever read. I enjoyed The First Earl I See Tonight that I purchased book 31 in the A Debutante Diaries Novel.

Gray Earl of Ravenport has vowed to never love again. There is only one lady in his life the deserves his heart and that is his grandmother. Or that was until a fiery haired little sprite asked for his hand. I almost feel sorry for Gray, as I felt he was ill matched against Fiona.

Fiona Hartley has only one fault I guess you could say, it is that she loves her family eminencely and will sacrifice everything including her own heart for her family. She was in need of a husband and she set her eyes on Lord Ravenport.

Gray and Fiona are an interesting pairing, but they seem to work. I enjoyed their witty banter, their passion. Both have strong passion for protecting the ones they love.

Supporting characters were in abundance, all adding fun, touching and suspenseful moments. I felt that they gave Gray and Fiona layers that opened them up and helped feel the connection that had with one another. As for the plot, love this time era. Anna Bennett gave great descriptions of every scene, there was strong character building. I want Lily, Sophie and Lord Carter’s story. The First Earl I See Tonight holds a few surprises as well.

Rated 4 Stilettos by Deb!

The first book of a new and delicious series by one of the best writers of regency romance, “ First Earl I See Tonight” will leave you spellbound.

Fiona Hartley is desperate to find a husband in order to be able to access her dowry and pay off the blackmailer who is threatening to expose the true birth mother of her sister. A truth that will not only destroy her sister but her whole family. Fiona has to find someone that is not only in dire need of the substantial dowry she will provide but who her family would have no qualms about her marrying in haste. And it seems like she has found the perfect candidate. Now all she needs to do is convince him to marry her and marry her as soon as possible.

David Gray, Earl of Ravenport has recently been jilted by his fiancé and is in no hurry to marry or fall in love with anyone. So when he receives a marriage proposal from Miss Fiona Hartley he is not only shocked by her outlandish proposal but also a little intrigued. And try as he might, he just can’t seem to get her to reconsider or refuse her.

Fiona and Gray are complete opposites and you would think that they would hate each other or make each other unhappy. But it seems that opposites truly do attract and make for the best partners because these two have remarkable chemistry not to mention great dialogues and unforgettable scenes.

This series promises to be another winner from Anna Bennett. Not to be missed!!!

It is because of books like First Earl I See Tonight, by Anna Bennett, that I started reading and loving historical novels. This book brings suspenseful drama, delectable romance and wonderful characters all around. A great novel for sure and one I highly recommend to readers of the romance genre.

Fiona is being blackmailed with a secret that could ruin her sister, and the only way she can pay off the villain is by getting married quickly and accessing her sizeable dowry. After making a considered list of all the possible grooms, Fiona settles on the Earl of Ravenport and promptly sends him a business-like proposition. Grey refuses, being as he is a surly, cynical grump. When Fiona persists, Grey invites her and her whole family to his crumbling, run down estate believing that the sight of it will scare her off for good. Instead, romance and shenanigans happen.

The two leads were incredibly fun to watch fall in love, as I've soft spot for the Sunshine and Grump dynamic. The set up was intriguing and suitable for plenty of drama and hijinks. However, once things going up and running and it was time to wrap up the plot, that's where things fell apart a bit. The reveal of the villain (and minor quasi-villains) wasn't satisfying, nor was the manner in which they were dispatched. It felt like a bit of a hasty hand wave, like there wasn't a final plan in place and an ending was just slap-dashed off to meet a deadline. Still. It's a romance and as long as the main couple are engaging, it'll hit the spot anyway.

I liked the go getter attitude of the heroine which just stands out from the first page. This is not a heroine that is going to wait and pray for things to happen, nope, she is brave and one that makes decisions to protect her loved ones. I also loved the gruff and serious on the exterior but complete softie on the interior hero, Gray. I adored this story and their romance. The love scenes are hot and sweet. This is book one in the Debutante Diaries series and I would highly recommend it. I am on tenterhooks for Lily’s book which is next in the series.

David Gray, Earl of Ravenport is not in the market for marriage however Miss Fiona Hartley has several needs that rely on her marrying with the Earl being the best choice. This is the first of the Debutante Diaries series. Interesting characters and story line to keep the reader turning those pages.
Ebook from netgalley and publishers with thanks. Opinions are entirely my own.

Fiona honestly had no other choice but to propose to Lord Ravenport. Her family situation called for it and she selflessly answered the call. It was a win-win situation since she had a more than amble dowry to fix his crumbling home. Now, the only issue was convincing the stubborn man since he has a life filled with less than desirable memories. Will he be able to help her or forever be stubborn and narrow minded? Fiona’s strength will lure you in and make you fall in love with her bravery to defend her family at all costs.
