Losing a grandparent is extremely difficult. Losing a spouse is unimaginable. Both Tilda and her granddaughter, Tilly are grieving and struggling with the death of their husband and grandfather. The novel follows the two women as they adjust to life without their loved one and try to find their true selves.

My relationship with my own grandmother was very similar to Tilda and Tilly's. I was extremely close with her and to this day, still refer to her as my very favorite person. With that said, I was very excited to read this novel. The connection between the grandmother and granddaughter is very strong and the author does a remarkable job of crafting a believable relationship.

I enjoyed this heartwarming story for the most part, but feel that it was a tad slow-moving and unfocused at times. The storyline also bounced around quite a bit and this was confusing for me. However, I still connected with this engaging story about love, loss and hope.

I had seen this book on social media and was immediately drawn to the story line. I had never heard of the author, but no worries, thanks to NetGalley, I was able to request a digital copy of Tilda's Promise to read and review.  I always love books involving strong female characters, so I was thrilled when I was approved.

The story begins when Tilda Carr wakes up one morning to find her husband of forty years, Harold, has died in their bed. Tilda knows she must come through her sadness and cope with this tremendous loss.  While Tilda is obviously the main character in Tilda's Promise, there are infrequent switches to her 15-year old granddaughter and namesake, Tilly's point of view.  She is also struggling with the loss of her grandfather - he was her mentor, her hero, her best friend.

Right from the start, Tilda's Promise engages readers by sharing Tilda's ability to establish a beautiful and realistic warm relationship among Tilda, her daughter, Laura, and most especially, her granddaughter, Tilly. While initially, there is a lot of grief, the story slowly unfolds and shares the story of a family, their grief and how they found themselves on the other side of that grief.

I really felt that the characters were well written and believable -- actually relatable to readers. The story - grief is hard for anyone, and the author's ability to help readers see the perspectives of this family's loss were beautiful.  Thank you Ms. Moore!

I was provided with a complimentary electronic advanced reader copy by She Writes Press through Net Galley in exchange for my post.  I was not required to post a positive review, but have chosen to do so because this book was great! Thank you!

This read provides a realistic look at life after a love one dies. From the start, I was engaged with the story especially the relationship among Tilda, her daughter Laura and her granddaughter Tilly. Initially, there does not seem like much is going on but grief. Then slowly sub-plots unfold and I am hooked. A beautiful story about family, loss, and finding self.

Gave up about 25% into the book. I just couldn't get into it and wasn't invested in the characters. Could be more my fault than that of the author. Not going to recommend, but won't give it bad reviews, either. Just not for me.

This book wasn’t as good as I was hoping it would be. It had a great concept and plot with a good character development but it wasn’t that engaging to me. I just couldn’t get into this book which is why I am giving it only 2 stars.. I stopped at 55%. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing this book for my honest review.

"I don't understand why God, if there is one, put us here to love people so much and then to take them away. It's an awful thing to do."
Tilda awakens one morning to find her husband of forty years has died in their bed. It is the one time, in a long time, Tilda slept all night.
The hurt, fear, anxiety and grief are told in this wonderfully written novel.
Tilda knows she must learn to cope, but how?
Her granddaughter Tilly, is also struggling. She has lost her mentor and best friend. How do you help a fifteen year old, when each day brings your own struggle to keep going?
This is their journey of healing.
An uplifting story! I admired Tilda's relationship with Tilly! There is a lot to learn from Tilda!

So many books focus on youth. Its wonderful to read a book where the protag is an older woman, rich with a life of long memories.
This book deals with grief, and how it affects the entire family.
I shed a tear or two whilst reading, as I found the description of grief and losing a loved one excellent - full of the little things that can shake you to the core, and also the larger feelings of loss and moving on, how it can take over a life, but still allow for growth as a person as you learn to live alongside your grief and still have room for love and life.
I also really liked the juxtaposition of a teen questioning their gender alongside the death of a family member - the themes of letting go (of assumptions, of how you remember someone, of difference) really meshed well and lent depth to the novel.
Recommended.
