I was so excited to read this one. Cancer is a disease that touches so many people; you could probably speak to any random stranger and they have either had some type of cancer or they've known at least one person who has. Even with as common and 'understood' as it is, it's still such a puzzle to control and get rid of it. Really interesting read.

If you are like me, having no prior knowledge of immunotherapy other than having heard the word but no real familiarity with the concept, and knowing people closest to you who have succumbed to their cancer diagnosis (dad and grandmother), then this book is an excellent introduction to the topic of navigating cancer through immunotherapy. What is perhaps best about this book is that it distills what can be a complex and usually an inviting read (science and biology) and makes it absolutely readable. Well done and worth your time! Thank you to NetGalley and Hachette for providing this book for an honest review.

I went into this book with little to no knowledge about immunotherapy. The author gives a thorough history it. This was an easy book to read and I recommend it. Thanks netgalley for the copy!

Thank you Twelve Books and Netgalley for this ARC.

This was a very informative book for me, particularly coming from a low base level knowledge on immunotherapy and cancer. As someone who enjoys reading books based on health, I found it incredibly interesting and learned much about this new to me subject,

This was a great read. It is a short book at 200 pages. The book describes briefly the history of cancer immunotherapy — numerous failed attempts and recent successes. Primary goal of cancer immunotherapy is to get the immune system to attack cancer cells and potentially cure the patient. Advances in the understanding of the mechanisms with which the immune system works is one of the reasons for the success of these therapies.

The description and potential of new immunotherapies such as checkpoint inhibitors, CTLA-4 blockers, PD1/PD-L1 inhibitors, and CAR-T was fantastic. The technical content was interspersed with personal stories of cancer patients, researchers, and doctors. The book is accessible to laymen without much knowledge of medicine.

Book could have benefitted from some editing to further streamline it.

Overall , a fantastic read. I could not put the book down.

Excellent, entertaining look at immunotherapy and its history

Immunotherapy is an incredibly complex subject but author Charles Graeber manages to navigate the reader through it all. His writing is conversational and he is a great story teller. The book also includes a large component of the history of immunotherapy. The one weakness I found was that the footnotes were not in the same tone as the rest of the book and some were quite complex. Nonetheless, I recommend this book for anyone interested in medicine.
