This book is from 2018 and I did not do a review on it because I have been using it as a guide while I have been working on projects. This has been a very useful tool and I call it that because I did not grow up working with wood or repurposing I just came into it as something to do to stay busy and it has been enjoyable. This book has helped with step-by-step instructions on how to take an old piece of furniture and bring it back to life. Overall a very good and useful book

Very modern book, shows the love and need of repurposing items - particularly wood - to bring new life to objects to be loved. This made me consider how often we are too quick to discard our things when they grow old or damaged. If more people like this author decided to repurpose Wood we may have more trees and less destruction of our precious rainforests etc. Very refreshing and interesting read.

I got this for my husband and he found this very informative and interesting! I loved the pictures and we both got some neat ideas from going through the book together.

Working Reclaimed Wood is a new gallery guide curated by architect trained wood wizard Yoav Liberman. Released 4th Sept 2018 by Popular Woodworking, via F+W Media, it's 160 pages, full color and available in hardcover and ebook formats.

Most of us live, indisputably, in a throwaway culture. Mass marketing and consumer driven 'replace-don't-repair' are pervasive and destructive. The need to curb and reverse this 'trash culture' is global and if we're to survive, we're going to have to do everything we can as individuals and society to step up and find creative solutions. There are a small (but growing) number of designers, artists, recyclers and businesses who are contributing to the reclamation and reuse of raw materials.

As stated before, this is not really a tutorial book. There are a few tutorials included with isometric drawings at the end of each chapter; but it functions much better as a really gorgeous inspirational catalog for the advanced woodworker. It is exactly what the title states, a guide for ethically sourcing, reclaiming and using reclaimed wood in the woodworking studio. Individual artists are featured along with their work and some of their design philosophies.

The book is beautifully photographed and illustrated. It's arranged in chapter format with the illustrated items collected to support a central theme: restoring sourced materials, including hardware, designing pieces and developing artistic vision. There's a useful (basic) index at the back of the book. There are a few resource vendors mentioned in the book, but there's not a comprehensive vendor list anywhere.

One of the book quotes really resonated with me:

Reducing consumption, increasing product quality and
longevity, taming down the irresponsible chase for new
fashions and fads, reclaiming the discarded and rehabilitating
the old and worthy, will pave our way for a sustainable future.

This would make a really lovely gift for the artistically sensible reading woodworker. I got a lot out of reading the artists' statements and design philosophy and creator stories included in this book. I enjoyed it very much and can recommend it highly.

Four stars.

My boyfriend and I have recently been tinkering in the garage, and this book came to me at the best time! This book gave me great selling points in my reclaimed wood pieces. Specifically that working with reclaimed wood is better for the environment! I will recommend this book to anyone looking for inspiration!

This book is absolutely gorgeous, and I would love to make some of these projects! I think I need to learn more basic woodworking first, though.

If you are into working with your hands and getting this dirty you need to pick up this book. Not only will it inspire you to go dumper driving but the pictures are beautiful and the ideas the author will give readers are inspiring.
I can tell you I have started on a project and following a lot of ideas that have been present in this book.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the advance copy for my personal thoughts.

An informative book on the subject of working "reclaimed" wood.
Reclaimed wood is material that was originally used for a different purpose (an old barn, an old piece of furniture, an old pallet, etc.). Or it can be pieces of wood left over from another project.
The author has made a career out of using reclaimed wood. In the book he describes his understanding of what reclaimed wood is, where to find it, and how to design with and use it. He really helps the reader to understand that anyone can find old wood to repurpose.
Oh, and the beautiful projects he (and others) make! Truly works of art! I practically drooled on the book as I was reading it.
I really enjoyed this book and intend on putting it's ideas to good use. Although my wife might have a different opinion, when my garage/shop starts filling up with old wood, and she tries to hide in the car when I go dumpster diving!

If only I had a barn full of every machine and tool I could every wish for! Even so this book is an inspiration for anyone who loves wood. The furniture is practical but with a modern twist and still has that eco reclaimed element that is so important these days. The is lots of useful information about different Woods and how to use them but also about the metal fixture, hinges and handles and how to renovate and repurpose them. I’m a bit of a magpie and some of those brass fittings I’ve salavaged (cannot bare to throw out!) are already soaking in a vinegar bath.
