I'm just shocked this got published twice. I don't have anything nice to say but this definitely feels like it was written in 1980 something.

I don’t know if anyone if familiar with the Perils of Pauline, but Earl to the Rescue is very reminiscent of the series. Gwendeline is the heroine who gets into one scrape after another through no fault of her own. Just when you think she’s safe, she’s not.

I’m not sure if this novel can be considered a true mystery genre, but there is mystery and there is a lot of suspense because I never know when the heroine is going to get into another scrape and how in the world is she going to be rescued and by whom? On top of that are the mysterious notes and at least one villain on the loose. Just how many people are involved with her predicaments?

Through it all is Lord Merryn. Mysterious Merryn. I couldn’t figure him out. I believe that stems from the fact that this tale is strictly told from Gwedneline’s point of view only. I had to garner whatever clues I could from his reactions to things people told him, or how he always seemed to be there, sooner or later, when the heroine needed him the most.

I couldn’t judge their attraction by passion because this was a truly sweet story. The focus was definitely on the heroine, and she eventually figures out her feelings but it’s all because of their interactions, their growing relationship as the story went on, and what the hero and heroine learned about each other throughout the novel. I wasn’t exactly confident of their growing affections being real, certainly not from the vantage point of the hero. He was most proper. Powerful to be sure, but proper, so I have to say that I think this story played out within the strictures of the society of the period. At times the pace seemed slow, bogged down by the details of daily living, then it would speed up for a while, keeping those pages flipping, until it didn’t. Completing the book wasn’t a hardship by any means; I enjoyed Gwendeline’s stubborn refusal to accept what she was told because she intuited there was more to it – and she was right. The wrap up chapter was both exciting, dramatic and brought a happy ever after closure that seemed fitting for Lord Merryn and Gwendeline.

Earl to the Rescue was a nice story filled with adventures and surprises, a sweet romance and well worth reading.

Gwendoine Gregory is left destitute after her parents die in an accident .
Out of the blue , Alex ,Earl of Merryn offers a home and a chance at a London Season
Out of her depth in Society , Gwendoline has to fight off a scoundril set on compromising her -
the Earl arrives just in time to save her - can she trust his motives .

This a light hearted historical romance which was predictable and does not quite meet the mark .

I was given an arc of the book by NetGalley and the Publisher in exchange for an honest review

Jane Ashford has a way with words that take us to heart of the ton and swirl us around like an Earl in a ballroom. This book took the cake and made me fall in love right along with the characters. I found them to be realistic and wholly diverting, I can’t wait to buy the next from this talented author

I didn't realize when I requested this that it was a reprint of a book older than myself. There was a lot of reporting events that happened, rather than showing events as they were happening, but the main reason I put it down is that the main character isn't one. She was rarely referred to by her name, mostly instead as "the girl" and similar. It felt like she had no agency. She wasn't a person.

There are a couple things that I hate in this book.
First, this is a book that was previously published as the different title. I don't like that. I looked on Goodreads before and I found out it was published in the 80's and I have to agree with one reader there that it also kind of reads as something from that era.
There is so far absolutely no romance. Zero.
The hero shows up on heroine's doorstep as her saviour, taking her to London and rescuing her. I didn't even know he was the hero at first, I had to check with the blurb because like I said, there is no connection, chemistry with the heroine.
Heroine keeps repeating how she's stupid because she didn't read as much as one should and frankly, it's annoying to read this almost every chapter.
What I also find annoying is the "mystery". When talking with other people, they often say something about her family or her being in London (how she got there) and when Gwendoline asked them what they meant, they immediately changed the theme or starts denying ("It's nothing."). This also comes from her so called friend. I would be pissed at that moment but apparently Gwen doesn't mind or realise that.
Like I said nothing memorable so far, no romance and nothing that would keep me reading. I think I would just get more annoyed with further reading.

Also, not cool to republish a book from the 1980 with a different title. Really not cool.

I received this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I have to say I did not love this. There was really little or no romance in this book. There was a good story but it just wasn’t a love story.

This was a pretty good read. I read through it pretty quickly. I thought Gwendoline was a pretty strong girl to endure both of her parents death alone. I thought this book wasn’t quite as good as some of the other books I’ve read by this author but overall pretty good

When Gwendoline Gregory is left destitute after her feckless parents die in a coach accident, Alex St Audley, Earl of Merryn, comes to the rescue (totally out of the blue) with the offer of a home and a London season, but what are his motives. In truth I read this sometime last year and forgot to blog it, and now I find it a bit unmemorable and somewhat predictable.

Earl to the Rescue by Jane Ashford

Gwendeline Gregory has lost everything… her parents, her home and all of her friends… She is destitute when Alex St. Audley, Earl of Merryn arrives in time to share the good fortune of a trust that was created by her parents friends to support their one child…

Lord Merryn expected a child when he arrives to the rescue… will an entailed past ruin his good deed? Will Gwendeline discover the truth of her good fortune?

Full of heroism and good deeds, this novel has many twists and turns as you discover the truth behind the generosity. I enjoyed Ashford’s writing and was especially fond of the Lord Merryn character. I would recommend this book to historical fiction fans.

Lovely read. Nice heroine, would have liked more interaction with the hero. Great secondary characters. Smarmy villian

Earl to the Rescue by Jane Ashford is a re-release that has something for everyone. There's scandal, intrigue, likable characters, unlikable characters causing trouble and secondary characters that you want to get to know better.

Gwendeline Gregory doesn’t know what to think when she encounters the dashing Alex St. Audley, Earl of Merryn. She’s in over her head in London Society, trying to fend off a scoundrel who will stop at nothing to ruin her. On the brink of a devastating scandal, the earl arrives just when she needs him most. But are his motivations trustworthy? And can he avert ruin for both of them?
This was a pretty decent read. I read through it rather quickly. I liked the characters and the plot. I recommend.

This book was pretty average. Nothing really interesting about it and I think the plot holes really left me disconnected with the storyline and the characters. And this was really predictable. And I don't mind that often in books but with this one I just wasn't into it. I was bored most of the book and it took me quite a while to read it. Honestly the characters weren't great either, they weren't interesting and I just didn't understand a lot of their choices honestly. I hoped for better and sadly didn't get it.

Thank you NetGalley for facilitating this title.
After reading some of the reviews, I wasn't expecting much. I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it either. I just don't believe this is under the right genre.
Most of it is quite unrealistic, but I can look past that, after all it's a work of fiction and imagination can be wild. The one thing that ruined it a bit for me was the lack of romance in this "historical romance".
I am a fan of such authors as Stephanie Laurens and Darcy Burke, so my taste goes towards a more romantic, graphic kind of story.

This was a fast moving book and I enjoyed that even though he helped her she wasn't needy. Jane Ashford does historical romance like no one else.

What is better than scandal in Society.....and love story. Intrigue. Great book that I could not put down. Jane Ashford has moved has moved onto my must read list. Looking forward to more from her.

I missed the pub date, and I'm sorry. I love Jane Ashford books and although this re-release was not her best but it was still and enjoyable, fast-paced read. In the world she creates, all is not what it seems. Gwendeline Gregory’s parents are dead. She is destitute and needs to be out of her home. These are the stereotypical aristocratic parents; they visit other friends, have house parties and don't know their child. There's not much for Gwendeline to mourn. That still leaves the issue of where she will go and how she will support herself. When Alex St. Audley, Earl of Merryn, shows up to tell her that her parents' friends are going to help her, Off to London she goes, and much adventure ensues. This is quite a complicated plot, complete with (2) kidnappings. I read this in one fell swoop and enjoyed it immensely, although it is not a book that necessarily lingers or, if you think about it, doesn't have contradictions. But there are books to savor over and books to dive in to as escape. This is one of those. Happy to have read it. (I received an advance copy on NetGalley. Opinions mine.)

I found this book hard to get into. There was alot of back info/story given that I felt was too much. I usually love historical romance, but just couldn't "feel" for the main characters. Gwendoline just didn't have much of a personality. I'd def give this author another try, just because I love how easy historical romance is to read and get into.
