It is always such a pleasure to pick up a Regency novel and discover that it introduces a new and different storyline than one ever explored before. For that reason, I was thrilled to consider that EARL TO THE RESCUE by Jane Ashford was to be just such a novel.

Although it did seem to initially follow a bit of a well-used trope, that of a previously well-to-do young woman left nearly destitute upon the unexpected death of her devil may care parents, it then smoothly moved into an unexpected twist. Miss Gwendeline Gregory receives a visitor, the Earl of Merryn, who explains that a group of her parents’ friends have become aware of her difficult circumstances and wish to help. To her great surprise, she is offered the use of an unneeded London house belonging to Lord Merryn and an income of £1,000 per year.

Unfortunately, it was at about this stage of the book that I began to lose interest. The storyline became somewhat convoluted, but also just downright boring. Not only that, I came to actively dislike Gwendoline, who continually referred to herself as stupid. The Earl wasn’t a great deal better, as I was never entirely certain if he really was the hero of the book or a villain, thinly disguised.

Perhaps my disappointment with the novel partially arises from the fact that Jane Ashford is a favorite author who normally writes lovely, intelligent Regencies. However, EARL TO THE RESCUE is nearly unrecognizable as this author’s work and I can not recommend it.

This book was odd in that it did not fit well with other books in this time period, then I found in the front that this story is at least 30 years old and appears to have not been updated in the writing. It was hard to get interested in the book because Gwendeline seems to constantly refer to herself as not very smart. I just had a really hard time getting interested in the story. Someone else may appreciate it more than I did therefore I gave it a three. The cover is beautiful and appears to have been updated, too bad the story wasn’t.

💋
Wonderful adventure, with a great storyline and characters.
My only criticism would be that it slowed in places ,I wish the tempo had stayed the same throughout it would have got a five star from me .
The story did pick up again soon enough and was good
The romance between the two mains was slow built , and it would have benefited from a little more affection on his part but again it didn’t ruin the overall experience.
On the whole very enjoyable and a great book to curl up with x

I couldn’t finish this. I got brother/sister vibes from hero and heroine. Could not care less about these two. I’m sorry.

Jane Ashford is one of my favorite writers. Honestly so many of her stories are some of my favorites that I'm beginning to think the woman is like Midas with her words, they all turn to gold before my eyes. I adore her characters and plot lines and nearly always finish the book in one setting because I just can't seem to bring myself to put it down. This book was no different and I can't wait to buy it and read it again as soon as it comes out in print.

I tried to like this book but it was flat. The characters just don't have any depth. I felt like I was reading a several ideas slapped together with very little cohesion.

Gwendeline's story is very interesting. A young woman whose parents basically abandon her as a child and are then killed in an accident before her come out. In comes Lord Merryn to save her. There are ups and downs. Some great secondary characters who really helped the story along. Gwendoline matured a great deal during her story. She faced disappointment head on, and earned her HEA.

I received this ARC from NetGalley and the publisher for an honest review.

This book had a very confusing and frustrating plot with many holes in it. The characters were secretive and almost creepy. The main character kept putting herself down by saying "I'm stupid." The relationship between the two main characters was non existent. Overall, I would not recommend this book.

I usually like Jane Ashford (especially the recent The Duke's Sons series), but this book was not very engaging at all. The premise was really promising - the heroine (Gwendeline Gregory) discovers that she is going to lose everything after her parents die in extreme debt. At the beginning of the story she seems like she is going to be capable and resourceful, even though she lacks self-confidence. Then, a mysterious friend of her parents comes to the house (the hero, Alex St. Audley, Earl of Merryn) and "rescues" her. He takes her to his home with the intention of marrying her off, but of course they fall in love instead.

The issue is that the entire story doesn't hold up to the promising beginning - instead of being smart and resourceful, Gwendeline ends up being extremely silly and helpless. She understands that it's odd that a complete stranger has come to rescue her but buys his ridiculous excuse for a long time. Their dynamic was a couple was also really off-putting - she was a young, naive and silly girl and he was portrayed as an older, wiser benevolent savior; it really reminded me of romance novels from the 80s/90s that had patronizing heroes and empty-headed heroins. It's also not at all clear how much older than Gwendeline Alex is - it bothered me that it wasn't clarified, especially since he was a friend of her parents and their dynamic was so icky.

I received a copy of Earl to the Rescue from NetGalley for an honest review.

It pains this reader to leave a bad review, but since I received a copy of Earl to the Rescue from NetGalley, a review is required.

Historical romances are my fav genre and the blurb for this story caught my eye, so I sent in a request. I've tried 3 times to get into this story, and it's just a no go for me. Gwendeline is portrayed as a country bumpkin thrust into society after the deaths of her parents. The Earl of Merryn and his mother act as her benefactor to assist her with society life. The problem I had is Gwendeline feels it necessary to tell anyone that will listen how "stupid" she is. Seriously! She's forever saying "I'm stupid". At 30% into the story, I was starting to feel stupid myself for wasting my precious time reading about two characters that by the end of the book, I had no feelings for nor cared if they had their HEA.

Honestly, I can not bring myself to recommend this book. Book reviews are subjective to the reader's likes and dislikes, and perhaps this just wasn't the story line for me. If you are a lover of historical romance, you may enjoy, but this reader did not.

I received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Honestly I do not have anything positive to say about this book. I finished it only because I promised to do a review. The writing is mediocre at best. I never did find a real plot for the story and the characters were not well developed at all. The series of mishaps the main character has happening to her gets old and not believable. Thumbs down on this one, don't waste your time or money.

I love Jane Ashford but this book just didn't do much for me. I had not read this one before so I wasn't disappointed that it was a re-release. There just wasn't the amount of romance and fun that I wanted.
I received a free copy for my review and here it is! Maybe get it if you didn't read this one when it was first released, read it, like it ok!

I was so disappointed in this book compared to the last book of Ms. Ashford's I had read. Then I discovered this was a re-write of her first book and that helped. Gwendeline is very young and I loved the character of Alex, however the author never really explored him too much. Gwendeline was a simpering miss and I found myself frustrated with her and her impetuousness. Over all it was a good read. The two main characters just didn't have enough interaction for me to believe they were truly in love with each other.

Earl to the Rescue was a great read! It has suspense, love, laughter, drama, really a little bit of everything. It is the love story of Alex St. Audley, Earl of Merryn and Gwendeline Gregory. No one has ever been able to captivate this lord, until Gwendeline a young woman who has spent her entire life in the country, comes to town. I was cheering for these to two through the whole book, and not going to lie a couple times was yelling at the pages going what! It made for a very exciting read, that kept you guessing. I would definitely recommend it.

I was as confused as Gwendeline was in the beginning. I kept hoping that there would be some more explanation and was impatient for it. Then when it was explained it was dealt out very sparingly. It took several chapters to get the gist of the whole story. For this reason alone I gave this book three stars.

I really liked the cover from this book, but I couldn't finished the book. I felt that the story was lacking, plus the Characters didn't have any chemistry. I really hate to give a negative rating. Thanks to Netgalley for this free copy. My opinion is my own.

I usually don't read historical fiction and I had heard about this author so I decided to give it a shot. I honestly just couldn't get into it. There really wasn't anything exciting about the story line and it was just boring to me. I couldn't even finish the book. I gave it a shot, but it just wasn't for me.

Earl To The Rescue by Jane Ashford is a wonderful historical romance. Ms. Ashford has given us a well-written book and filled it with a stellar cast of characters. Gwendeline has lost her parents and everything is being auctioned off. When Alex, Earl of Merryn, arrives to whisk her off to London she goes along with the plan. Alex and Gwendeline's story is loaded with drama, humor, action, suspense and spice. I enjoyed reading Earl To The Rescue and look forward to reading more from Jane Ashford in the future. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Gwendeline Gregory is a bit of a silly heroine in this book, though it was nice to find a departure from the standard bookish girls who don’t quite fit in. And the hero, Alex St. Audley, is kind and charming and tries to do the right thing by Gwendeline. I didn’t quite buy the kidnappings–or rather, I wasn’t deeply invested in them–but I liked the book, for all that. 4 stars.
