I wasn’t able to finish this book. Because of this, it is my policy not to review the book on my site or on Goodreads/Amazon. I also didn’t mark it DNF.

Reading this book opened my mind and make me think about how many grains are in my diet and what effect that could be having on me. I love reading books like this that are well-done and informative but seek to help you. This book was well written, the research was obviously there, and I felt like I truly learned something.

This was a great book in its first incarnation. Very happy to see an updated version. This is more motivation to move back to our paleo way of eating. While we've eaten gluten-free for years due to celiac, we had allowed some "safe" grains to creep back in. If you haven't read this book, you need to. David Perlmutter wrote a game-changer with Grain Brain the first time around; here's hoping it catches fire again.

Extremely eye opening. Anyone who doubts the power food has over our health should read this book ASAP.

GRAIN BRAIN by David Perlmutter has just been released in an updated version five years after initial publication. For those not familiar with this text, Perlmutter is a neurologist and Fellow of the American College of Nutrition as well as an associate professor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. His original Grain Brain publication was considered revolutionary in terms of its emphasis on reducing gluten and carbohydrate intake when other scholars were focusing primarily on fat and cholesterol. In this latest version, Perlmutter continues his argument that carbohydrates can contribute to brain disease like dementia, ADHD, headaches, and depression. As the publisher explains, this revised text "puts forth the most compelling evidence to date that a non-GMO, gluten-free, and low-carb diet is crucial for cognitive function and long-term health." Perlmutter proves a self-assessment tool and additional scientific background, plus a discussion of dietary habits, a four-week plan of action and meal plans and recipes. Over the years, Perlmutter's text has been of interest to our students and we expect to have the updated version on our shelves soon.

This is a reprint of the original book that published in 2013. I was pleased to receive this for review. Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley for the opportunity. My opinion is my own.

I gave up sugar 5 years ago and followed by giving up grain foods and carbs. I noticed a definite difference in my health. I read everything I can on health and found this book and the original most helpful and informative. If you seeking better health through giving up toxic sugar and grains you should read this book. For me it was a easy choice and not difficult at all. I simply threw out everything with sugar and then carbs and grains and never looked back. As a vegan I was pleased to make such even more positive change for my personal health.

As a aging person I was pleased to read the section on how grains , carbs and sugars affect our brain and can lead to dementia. The author writes how degenerative conditions can be triggered by heavy carb and wheat intake and affect our brains directly.

This book has a excellent four week plan for all who wish to improve their health by eliminating carbs, sugar and wheat. Recipes are here that are nutritious and easy to follow. This is a critically important body of work for improving your health.

This book contains a lot of interesting information to think about. It may well be a good idea to eat a lot less bread and such, but it will be difficult to do so.... No harm in trying it, though!

I read this when first published and hoped there would be lots of new information and studies to bolster the assertions of Dr Permutter. I’m glad the book is in a new edition and will recommend it, particularly to someone who has never read this work.
Thank you NetGalley forthe opportunity to read and review this advance galley.

Grain Brain is a very interesting, well researched book about the impact of grain on your mental health and strategies to prevent dementia and Alzheimer's. As a person who is gluten free, it is nice to hear that possibly I am doing something good for my brain as well as my celiac disease.

I am not sure i agree with all of the recommendations but he did have research to back it up and some was common sense. I recommend reading it and deciding what is right for you.

This was a very interesting and informative book. I was somewhat familiar with Dr. Perlmutter’s work through Ann Boroch’s book, Healing Multiple Sclerosis. With his current book, I have gained a tremendous amount of insight in how much the brain is affected by what we consume and our lifestyle. Those experiencing any type of cognitive decline can be helped by changing their ways. Besides the extensive research in this book, the authors also included meal plans and the importance of essential supplements. From personal experience, going gluten-free has helped me to maintain a healthier lifestyle despite having MS. The use of essential supplements instead of pharmaceutical drugs proved to be beneficial as well.

This was an extremely well written and very understandable book. If you have any health issues or want to maintain your health, read this book. I will recommend this book, not only to family and friends, but also to my health professionals so others might benefit as well.
