Jonah is such a funny, unique story sitting in the middle of the “minor prophets.” Keller, like always, has incredible insight into this unique story. Grace is a central theme in the book, and Keller points out our cultural and religious values that make us despise grace (much like Jonah did). Jonah puts country before God, and this causes him to be angry about God’s grace. This nationalistic zeal led to pride that blinded Jonah to God’s grace in his own life. Keller always helpfully points out heart idols and how these things fundamentally controlled Jonah’s life- in a similar way many Christians cling to the comfort of “good” idols which end up controlling our lives as well. The fruit is ugly, but the root is a seemingly innocent heart worship of things other than God. Keller writes clearly and in a devotional style that makes this an easy, yet challenging book.
