An enjoyable reenactment of the April 2002 attempted coup on Hugo Chavez. What actually happened is a bit unclear but this book gives a mostly realistic version of the plotting, backstabbing, blindsiding and ineptness of the Generals who plotted Chavez's downfall. Chavez comes out of the book as a passionate Venezuelan who wanted to help the people. It is a book for those interested in political dramas and international tensions.
The lack of realism is the American "hero" in the story. He is a Navy officer and the newly appointed DIA rep in the Embassy. Things I found hard to believe: he speaks little Spanish, he is embroiled in this political drama although this is outside of DIA's gambit, he seeks advice from an external US consultant rather than his chain of command, he shares a photocopier with the local CIA agent, he takes a secret document home in an unsecure bag and shows it to his Venezuelan mate, he doesn't know the new US Ambassador so he gets his Venezuelan mate to give him a briefing and he helps Chavez without seeking any advice on the formal US position.
