I adore this series so much, so when Forever offered me a copy of The Highland Renegade, you better believe I jumped on it! In this story, we get a bit of a Hatfields and McCoys twist. The heroine's family has feuded with the hero's clan for a while. So, Janet doesn't think highly of Robert. Robert doesn't let that stop him from saving her!

Janet certainly is sassy so don't assume this is a typical historical romance. There isn't the Regency behaviors and I find that freeing. After a few initial meetings, Janet and Rob end up fleeing danger together which always leads to intense feelings. But then they are separated again. However, now they both know there are mutual feelings for each other and Rob isn't going to let anything get in the way. His opportunity comes when Janet is in danger (again).

Rob is a wonderful hero! He is strong and brave and, despite Janet's family's feelings, a good and honorable man. I really enjoyed his character and his drive to fight for Janet. Like I mentioned above, you do get a kind of feuding families story here and these 2 wonder if they could ever be together. Its all very West Side Story and I totally dug that!

The Highland Renegade is perfect for fans of historical romance who want something different than a regency and like the slightly forbidden vibe in their romance. I hope Jarecki continues to write this series-I am very interested in Rob's sister! Also, her attention to historical detail is delightful! As a history major, I just love when an author really puts in the time and effort to be as historically accurate as possible, especially for a less common time period.

The Highland Renegade by Amy Jarecki is book 5 in the Lords of the Highlands Series. This is the story of Laird Robert Grant and Janet Cameron. I have read the previous books, but I feel this can be a standalone book.
Robert has always been drawn to Janet but she is is revivals daughter so she is of course not for him. But when she is taken, he goes forward to help get her back. Janet works to escape her captors but when she is saved by Robert she still works to escape. Janet knows she should fight her attraction to Robert but the more time they are together them more neither can easily walk away.
Loved it!

Hello all and welcome to my first full review of 2019! And an ARC review to boot!

Forever Publishing was kind enough to send it’s bloggers this primo pick as part of their newsletter and I was so excited! Historical romance was one of the genres I discovered last year and ever since I started them I’ve been hooked. They’re predictable, but in all the best ways. They’re sweet, sassy, steamy, and have happily ever afters that would make even the most seasoned romance reader swoon. The Highland Renegade was no different!

What I liked the most about this book were the characters. First, Miss Janet was sassy and hilarious and I loved the fact that she always said what was on her mind and never worried too much about being ladylike. Second, Robert Grant was equal parts handsome/dangerous renegade and sensitive/caring hero. They worked so well together and their relationship blossomed so naturally throughout the book, they really were the perfect pair.

Usually the pacing in romance novels can be a little iffy because they tend to run a little slow through the beginning and middle, but this one was paced excellently. Part of this was because it was written so well and the other part was because it had all my favorite tropes. That’s right, I said ‘all’, because there were MULTIPLE! There was the forced proximity, the enemy turned lover, and of course the childhood crush. It was literally all my favorites in one. Also, the banter was amazing. I mean, at one point Robert called someone an ‘onion-eyed knave’ and it was hilarious.

I don’t believe these need to be read in any order, I think the characters just have cameos in the other novels, so if you hadn’t read the others (like meeee!) you’ll be fine! Also, the author’s note in the back shed some light on the true history of Janet and Robert and it was so sweet and the best ending. Basically, this book was a historical romance gem and the perfect treat to start the year. Thanks to Forever and be sure to check this out when it releases on Tuesday!

Damned if you do and damned if you don’t. Laird Grant is in an untenable predicament. His clan has been fighting with the Cameron’s for so long it is hard to remember just how the debauchery of whose wife happened. Equally, it is easy for Grant to accuse the Cameron’s of thieving his yearlings. They’ve been thieving back and forth each other’s stock like an itch of a mosquito bite, where it is second nature to ‘scratch’. This time it is extreme – 66 yearlings just gone. Who could have done it if not the Cameron’s for it would take a large group to organize this?

When Grant is forced to protect the lovely Janet Cameron from the queen’s dragoon he does it because it’s the right thing to do—not for any other reason…maybe.

Janet’s brother Kennan follows much as his father has in the feud. It is what he learned as a child and as grown up he doesn’t believe they are trust worthy. He shows his dislike to Grant, yet Grant again, shows he’s made of better stuff. As a reader, I took Grant’s side, hands down.

Bad goes further south when Lieutenant Cummins takes notice, one too many times, to Janet. This finds Janet and Grant both running to stay away from the English prison. The pursuit is on, the journey is terrifying and edifying.

Janet’s mindset is shifting. She is starting to see Grant is more than the feuding enemy of her father. She sees a kind brother, fair laird who is loved by his people. Passion ends up sizzling underneath the surface. Each know what they feel can’t go further, because feuding clans have no tolerance for each other.

Grant’s life is on the line and so is Janet’s. Can there be a coming together of the clans to protect their own from the English? Will their own personal relationship win the day? Can each clan support is new paradigm?

A note about Janet: I loved this character. She is everything I would like to be if I were in her place. She’s strong-willed, even-tempered with a just and fair spirit, all wrapped in feisty temperament!

Author Jarecki has again created another tale in Lords of the Highlands which will entertain you with dangerous suspenseful scenes in one moment, emotional passionate scenes or tender moments in another. Her character development and ARC is spot-on. She is an author I can safely say you will enjoy.

The Highland Renegade extends the feud began in a previously in the Lords of the Highlands series. The generations long feud between the Camerons and the Grants draws you into the Highland life quickly. Ms. Jarecki writes of clan life and their loyalties that passed from generation to generation keeping those who could have been friends apart and those who could have been lovers apart, until now.

Janet Cameron and Robert Grant have had a connection for years seeing each other at various clan gatherings. But, they cannot approach the other due to the family differences, many of which have occurred during their lifetimes. Their fathers were enemies; their grandfathers were enemies.

Although a true Highland warrior, Robert has a gentle heart. He realizes that the highlanders must fight together when it comes to the English. Thus, his care for Janet’s brother during a skirmish with the English soldiers. And, his care and protection for Janet during the skirmish and her slide down the hill which broke her arm.

With Janet being taken to Robert’s home for healing, she began to see a man different from the one she knew through her family perspective. His love and care for his blind sister Emma is beyond what she would have believed of him. Their connection has been growing for years although not able to speak to the other. Now it has time to truly grow.

Janet has a truly giving heart, too. Her care of those who have difficult circumstances is part of what makes her a special person. She forms a true friendship with Robert's sister, Emma. And, she takes time to help others with her knitting and reading to those who need care.

Robert wants Janet beyond anything and he will do what is needed to have her, even if it means standing up for what he believes. Ms. Jarecki has an amazing understanding of clan life and builds around it for another really good book in the series.

The Highland Renegade is the fifth book in Jarecki’s The Lords of the Highlands series. Much like my last post, when requesting this book I didn’t pay much attention to whether the book was part of a series, however, again I had no issues jumping into this Scottish historical romance.

Forbidden love is the focus of this novel. Janet Cameron and Robert Grant belong to clans that have a longstanding feud. However, their icy interactions quickly turns sensuous after Robert saves her from the clutches of a drunken and vile English soldier. As Robert guides Janet to safety and eventually to his own home to cooperate the two fall in love. Despite Robert’s gallantry they both know her father and clan would never agree to a truce or marriage. Overcoming a number of obstacles the two finally unite their clans with the Jacobite uprising stirring in the background.

This was an easy and light read. On the whole I enjoyed the story line. This is my first time reading a Scottish historical romance and it definitely reminded me of Outlander, which I assume any Scottish romance will remind me of. My main hangup with the story however was the easiness in which several plot points were solved. The book builds up how the two cannot be together because the feuding clans and in a flash old grievances were settled and their marriage was agreed to . Additionally, the ending of the conflict with the English soldier also seemed a bit too neat. I would have liked more complication in both of these areas.

If you’re looking for a solid romance with a Scottish flair, I think you’d enjoy this.

Janet Cameron is in Inverlochy with her brother Kennan for the Samhain celebration, she is hoping that she will meet a man that she can fall in love with and marry, lest her stepmother finds someone for her. She sees Laird Robert Grant, but he is the last man she would ever consider, the Camerons and the Grants have been enemies for generations, but she can't help but notice how handsome he is. When her friend Mairi tries to play matchmaker, Janet is firm, Robert Grant is a thief and a rake - she would never love a man like him.

Robert has always noticed Janet, she is lovely and if she was anyone other than a Cameron, he would court her. He knows what she thinks of him and it makes him angry, yes, he has a reputation as a ladies man, but he is no thief! He is sure the Camerons are responsible for the theft of his cattle and has words with Kennan. When their mutual friend suggests a duel to settle the matter, Rob agrees.

The duel is underway when Janet arrives to stop it - Rob is clearly winning and is distracted by Janet's scream, giving her brother a chance to pull a dagger and cut Rob, declaring himself the winner. Before Rob can respond, English soldiers arrive and they scatter, in the confusion, Rob finds Janet and takes her back to town. He insists that she tend his wound, since her brother cheated. She is ashamed of Kennan's action and agrees. She starts to rethink her opinion of Robert. When he asks for a dance at the Samhain gathering, she agrees. But later when one of the English soldiers, Lt Cummings, is drunk and harasses her, things spiral out of control and she must run for her life.

She and Kennan take off, but are soon captured by Cummings, Kennan is beaten and left for dead and Janet is taken into custody, Cummings is taking her to the fort for punishment. Robert also left, but when he hears her scream, comes back to save her. He finds Kennan and has their friend Ciar take him to safety and goes after Janet. He rescues her from Cummings and they run, with the soldiers on their heels.

Janet is soaked and freezing, but they can't stop, they escape into the mountains and Robert tends her, in the morning, they learn the soldiers are still following them and Rob makes a decision, they will go further into the wilderness, over a treacherous pass and hopefully lose Cummings. They do lose him, but the cost is high, Janet goes over the edge and Rob fears she is dead. He sends his men on without him and goes to find Janet. She is alive, but her arm is broken and her horse is lame. He prepare to kill her horse, but she begs him not to, the lame horse will slow them down, but he agrees. He knows the storm is too bad to keep moving and Janet needs help, so he finds an abandoned brothy and they ride out the storm. He sets her arm and cares for her, they get to know each other and he is tempted, he knows he should return her to her family, but instead takes her to his home.

Janet is falling for Rob, he is nothing like she imagined, but she knows her father will never let her marry a Grant and there could never be anything between them. But that doesn't stop them from kissing and wishing for things that can never be. When her father arrives and takes her, Rob can do nothing but watch the woman he loves, ride away.

It will be months before they see each other again and there is still no solution to their problem, but when Rob learns who the real cattle thief is and Janet's life is in danger, he knows that he will not lose her again.

This book was amazing, it is nonstop action from almost the first page! The chemistry between Janet and Robert is undeniable and my heart broke for them, their love is forbidden and it seems like there is no way they can be together without causing a war. The book is well written, flows nicely, has some steamy-ish love scenes, a bit of angst, a villain bent on revenge, some wonderful secondary characters, some twists and turns, and finally a very hard won HEA. This is the fifth book in the series, but it is loosely connected to the previous stories and can easily be read as a stand alone title. I loved this book and can't recommend it highly enough!

3.5 stars. This story falls into a trope that I really enjoy. Waring families who have 2 people fall in love. The story line was solid, and I loved that the relationship was a slow burn.
My biggest struggle when reading this was that the dialogue was extremely hard to read. To an extent, I understand the choice the author made this way. Sadly, it came across forced, and like the author was trying to hard, hence my lower rating.

This well written and imaginative story begins in 1712, late October in the Highlands, Inverlochy livestock auction. Janet Cameron is being escorted by her brother Kennan. She is delivering knitted goods to the Highland Benevolent Society to be distributed to the needy. Her brother will attend the livestock auction and Janet plans to do a little shopping and attend the dance later.
Robert Grant, Laird of Clan Grant, has also come to the livestock auction. He’s lost over sixty head to thieves and believes some in Clan Cameron are the ones who stole them. The evidence is only circumstantial, but there is a long running blood feud between the Cameron and Grant clans.
Robert and Janet exchange glances and glares, each feeling an attraction for the other, but denying it, even to themselves. This is a summary of the beginning and certainly not as well done or as interestingly complete as the author did. I don’t do spoilers and believe the details of the story are something a reader should discover for themselves. That in mind, the intense action begins when at the dance later the villain Lieutenant Cummins, of the Queens Dragoons, is very in his cups and insists on Janet dancing with him. She declines, and he grabs her arm, turning she slaps his face.
That sets up her rescue by Robert Grant and the reason they spend time together. Each learning and trying to deny their attraction, but love is inevitable. But loving between feuding clans is not a clear-cut course.
I thoroughly enjoyed the descriptive language, the wonderful and fully developed characters, and the situations the author created. I will be reading many more stories from this author. I thought the story was thrilling, informative and wonderfully romantic. In fact, I fell for Robert Grant as much as Janet did! If you love highland romance, this is a must read. Be prepared for a wonderfully powerful, sometimes frustrating, romance. Enjoy!

Aye....the typical Scottish drama! Such an easy no stress read. Even after the feuding and big old Scottish honor stuff I didn’t get stressed, because after certain liberties were taken you knew it had to work out. Predicatable, very much so, but enjoyable read. Janet’s brother was a jerk for sure!
Action in the Scottish land with of course the dreaded Red Coats behaving badly. Good easy read. Received an ARC from The publisher through NetGalley.

This is a new twist on the Romeo & Juliet story, highlander style. Robert Grant is Laird of the Grant Clan. Janet Cameron is the daughter of Laird Ewen Cameron, neighbors of Grant that they have feuded with for generations. One of the lairds violated one of the other's female and it's never been forgotten. They raid each other's cattle and distrust each other on sight. Unfortunately Robert and Janet have been eyeing each others for years, drawn to forbidden fruit. At a Samhain gathering Janet is a popular dance partner and English Lieutenant Winfred Cummins is drunk and wants his turn. He refuses to take no for an answer and chaos ensues. Everyone scatters since Scotland is under English "protection" to ensure loyalty to the English Queen Anne. Janet escapes with her brother Kennan and they race home with Cummins and his troops close behind. Robert and his men are off towards home when he hears Janet scream and he races to her rescue saving Kennan's life while he's at it. They still have to hide from Cummins and so starts the adventure.

I really liked both of these characters. Robert is honorable, resourceful and a good Laird to his clan and family. His blind sister Emma almost stole the book. Amy's sensitivity to her infirmity is well written. I kinda hope she and Kennan end up together. Janet tries so hard not to fall for Robert but it's just not possible as they end up spending so much alone time together depending on each other to survive. Cummins is a delightful villain inhabiting all the worst in the English soldiers and dogged determination to find Janet. We meet old friends at the Duke of Gordon's ball too as well as the disguised displaced Scottish King. I enjoy Amy's rich character driven highland adventures that are so full of action and passion. Thank you Amy and Forever for the opportunity to review this story.

This scintillatingly sexy, sensuously romantic, and excitingly bold adventure is my favorite of the series so far! It is fast-paced, well-written and populated with likable and memorable characters. The hero and heroine are my favorite characters – of course – but I also really liked the hero’s sister, Emma and his best friend Ciar. I think they will be the featured couple in the next book – and I can’t wait to see that.

Laird Robert Grant and Miss Janet Cameron have been more than a little aware of each other for a long time, but neither of them would ever admit it. They’d vehemently deny it – and they would honestly believe it. They’ve covertly watched each other across fields and ballrooms for a very long time, but any relationship between them is totally forbidden. The Grants and the Camerons have been feuding for seven generations and the current leaders of the clans aren’t about to end the feud now.

It is a very dangerous time in Scotland and all of the inhabitants have to be constantly on their guard. Queen Anne sits on the throne of England and has dispatched red-coated soldiers all over Scotland to ‘keep the peace’ and to look for signs of anyone who supports the Stuart line for succession to the throne. The Jacobite cause is widely supported among the Highlanders and they are particularly vulnerable to the English Soldiers retaliations for any small infractions – real or imagined. The author did an outstanding job of making you feel that tension in the air – it surrounded everything and was so thick you could cut it with a knife. Excellent mood setting Ms. Jarecki.

Janet has traveled from Achnacarry to Inverlochy with her brother Kennan with the stated purpose of attending the Samhain Gathering and doing some shopping. Her real purpose is to look over all of the eligible men in hopes of finding a candidate for a husband – one she can love. Her father has recently remarried, though he is in his sixties, and Janet’s new step-mother wants to marry Janet off. Janet knows that if she can’t find someone herself, her step-mother will be more than happy to choose someone for her. Unfortunately for Janet, she attracts the attention of the Englishman, Lieutenant Winfred Cummins, charged with ‘keeping the peace’ during what he calls ‘an uncivilized pagan gathering’. That will not end well.

The excitement begins on the first page and doesn’t let up until the very end. After a confrontation with Lieutenant Cummins, Janet witnesses a confrontation between her brother and Laird Grant. Laird Grant is accusing her clan of stealing cattle from him. How dare he! Why, the Camerons have also had cattle stolen – maybe the Grants stole them. The animosity continues until finally, Ciar manages to convince both Robert and Kennan to battle each other – one-on-one – to end the feud. That goes well until Kennan cheats.

Later, after Janet has another confrontation with Lieutenant Cummins, he arrests her and proceeds to take her to Ft. Williams. Robert rescues her and they head off into the worst blizzard anyone has ever seen – with the Red Coats in hot pursuit. Janet is badly injured during the chase and Robert has to nurse her.

It was lovely to see these two people find their HEA. They were both such admirable people. Janet was loyal, level-headed, sensible and very caring while Robert was a tad impetuous as well as loyal, and caring. Janet was smart enough that she didn’t keep trying to escape from Robert – that would have just made her a TSTL heroine because she could never have survived in that environment on her own. Then, when confronted by her father, both she and Robert did the sensible thing rather than risk an open war between the clans. I did get a little aggravated with Janet when she just followed what her father and step-mother wanted rather than trying to reach Robert, but I sort of understand – you know – again – open war. So, I was very pleased to watch them slowly overcome the obstacles in their path and find their HEA.

I definitely recommend this book.

The Highland Renegade by Amy Jarecki
Lords of the Highlands #5

With the Samhain Festival at hand and two clans blaming one another for the loss of their sheep the situation is tense for the Camerons and Grants. Throw in the English to “keep the peace” and you have a situation rife for trouble and that is just what happens when Lieutenant Cummins becomes a bit to attentive to Janet Cameron and rather than lose face he opts to arrest her for slapping him. Then the chase ensues with Robert Grant coming to her rescue. The trip is not easy for her and she does sustain and injury but as she heals she realizes that what she thought true of Robert is just the opposite. Of course true love is not ever easily achieved so the two have to spend some time apart and find a way to be together which is part and parcel of this story...as is the bad guy getting his comeuppance. Entertaining and fun story that left me wanting to read whatever comes next by this author.

Thank you to NetGalley and Forever Grand for the ARC – This is my honest review.

4-5 Stars

Janet Cameron, daughter of a highland laird has travelled with her brother Kennan, to celebrate the festival of Samhain, with many other clans, and British soldiers. She has always thought Laird Robert Grant a handsome sexy highlander, but he’s also an enemy of her father and Clan Cameron. When Laird Robert Grant see Kennan and Janet he accuses her family of stealing some of his cattle and the heated battle begins.
Laird Robert Grant is loyal to his Clan, his King and to his family. When he realizes his enemies daughter is in danger from the redcoats he risks life and limb to go to her rescue. What a perilous journey they are headed on, a blizzard, her horse fall down a mountain side breaking her arm and Robert rides to her rescue before she freezes to death. He’s not quite what Janet expected, his unexpected gallantry in saving her life and loyalty to his family take her by surprise. The two begin growing closer to each other, neither believing their family feud will ever end and their new blossoming friendship will ever last, but can a love so strong help break the generations of feuding between the Grant’s and Cameron’s? She’s the daughter of his sworn enemy, does Robert have the strength to stand up to her family, to have the love of the one woman who make him yearn for hearth, home and children? A great story for Highland lovers as Robert and Janet journey through tough times to be together and have the happiness they both deserve. This my honest opinions after I voluntarily read a copy of this book that was provided to me with no requirements for a review.

I didn't likethis story. I LOVED IT! Character were so interesting. Janet is bold, open minded and strong, and fights for the man she loves. Robert is just what i dream a highlander laird should be, brave, courageous and bold. And when he loves. Look out!

Families deemed them enemies for life but their hearts destined them to be so much more. Set in their own hurtful, bias mindset, Janet and Robert, the main couple, though attracted to one another, seemed just as quick to keep this seven generations family feud going as everyone else. If not for the unplanned set of circumstances that had them spending time together, I have to wonder if they ever would have let love conquer all. Thankfully for us and them that is exactly what happened. Their simmering chemistry could not be denied, my fellow Scottish romance book loving friends.

The attraction the evil, English Dragoon had for Janet was questionable at best, as he seemed just as inclined to throw her in prison to rot along with every other highlander he came across. Yeah, that redcoat saw red whenever he crossed paths with a Scot. I found what happened to him in the long run karma but eyebrow raising bizarre at the same time. I also pegged him (no pun intended) for something he was trying to get away with long before it was revealed.

What I really wanted to see was a heroine so full of her highlander heritage she’d jump out of windows and into rivers to keep the hero on his toes and on a merry chase. Hey, don’t laugh. I read a book once with that same scenario, and it was epic. When the synopsis implied Janet takes every chance she gets to escape, first from the English then the hero, I thought that was what I was in for. However, I didn’t see the connection of her wanting to flee from Robert. She was quick to spar with him using words. Even resentful and angry at times, but I don’t remember her ever purposely running from him. She did shine through with her strength and resilience though in dealing with the dangerous weather conditions she and Robert found themselves.

All in all, I’ve enjoyed the first two books of this series the most. This storyline was certainly enjoyable but not as full of surprises as I had expected. At least Robert eventually manned up in a verra big way and put everything on the line to win the hand of his lady love.

P.S. Robert's younger sister was quite sweet and endearing. I've a sweet spot for heroine's with that condition. I'd love to see her paired with the guy who was only a friend to Janet.

The Highland Renegade by Amy Jarecki was an enjoyable historical romance in Scotland. The author presented well developed characters and historical detail of the time line in history. I recommend this story as a good historical romance..

Two families, a feud that has lasted generation and two heart pulling them together. Can love overcome years of disdain and treachery?

Robert Grant was powerful and rugged and handsome. But Janet fought her interest with everything in her. Until danger thrusts her right into his arms. With nowhere to go but with him, they run to the mountains away from the dragoons. An accident almost costs Janet her life but Robert will see to it that nothing ever hurts her again.

Robert has always had an eye for the lovely Janet Cameron. If only she wasn't the daughter of his greatest nemesis. Now with her recuperating at his home, he trys his best to stay away. Failing in every way he succumbs to her beauty, her allure and vows to win her heart, and her hand. But his stubborn pride gets in the way and when her father comes to get he the must watch as his heart is ripped away. Can these two ever bring peace to the clans? Can their love be more than stubborn pride and years of hatred? Only time can tell.

What a fun, enjoyable read! I loved the different personalities among all the characters, and the author did a wonderful job showing how polarizing politics was during that time period. It was interesting to see the interactions between the English soldiers and the Scottish highlanders, in particular. The other great thing about this book is that is entirely understandable even if you haven't read the previous books in the series, and, as the fifth book, that means if you like it, you have four other books you can dive into immediately.

For seven generations Clan Cameron and Clan Grant have been at odds. And during that time, they have stolen each other's cattle, challenged each other to duels, and at the very least, caused a great ruckus each time they came near each other. When Janet Cameron comes to Inverlochy to celebrate Samhain, her hope is to find herself a man she could love and marry. Who she finds is a lecherous English soldier who won't take no for an answer and an arrogant, beautiful Scottish laird who won't believe her when she says her family didn't steal his cattle. Robert Grant has no reason to believe her, and he has every reason to hate her family, but when he sees an English soldier abuse her, he sets family rivalry aside to assist. What results is a race through the Scottish highlands, forced proximity in the elements, and an undeniable attraction that must be fought if peace is to be kept.

Janet and Robert were perfectly matched in personality, and though they each misunderstood each other from the start, they weren't so arrogant as to be blind when circumstances change. I loved how Janet stood up for herself, not only to Robert but also to her brother and to her father. She refused to be managed, and she made sure everyone understood that. Robert obviously admired Janet quickly once they spent more time together. He had a good heart and recognized the same in Janet, particularly when she befriended her sister and didn't look down on her for her disability. The only downside to this relationship was, to be entirely honest, the sole sex scene. Just one. And it was a little corny - for example, the line "Ride me like a stallion colt" was mentioned, and I just couldn't help but laugh. However, besides that scene, I felt very moved by the story and became very excited at the prospect of another book in the series.

Hopefully Janet's friend Ciar will get the next book! I highly recommend this book to those who love a strong heroine, an honorable hero, and a slow burn romance.
