This is the second book in this series and whilst some background information is given, I’d recommend you read the first book in the series, Dark Lies.
This is a gripping thriller which has Nathan and Katie in hiding at the beginning of the book due to the events of Dark Lies.
A body is found and it seems Nathan is under suspicion.
Thankfully he has an alibi but they both know they have to return to civilisation to face the music.
Someone has Nathan’s diary and is leaking pages to frame him for committing the disturbing murders but most of the people around him know he’s not the killer.
This book gets a bit complicated regarding who is who near the end but it still had me on the edge of my seat.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

'The Goodnight Song' is the second novel to feature DS Kate Rhodes and criminal profiler Nathan Radley. It is definitely recommended that you read the series opener 'Dark Lies' before you embark on this one, as there are many references to events that took place in the previous book, and the plot relies heavily on those past occurences. I did struggle to get into the story at the beginning but found it was well worth the perseverance and soon I was gripped.

One of the aspects of the story I really enjoyed was that Hollin's blurs the line between the investigators and the criminal entities, with Nathan being embroiled in a life-changing game of cat and mouse with a brutal and dangerous unknown. It is a complex case and requires your complete attention but manages to do so without straying into overcomplication and a convoluted storyline. The killer, as often is the case in real life, is always one step ahead of those chasing him. The novel is told from the points of view of both Katie and Nathan and also features exclusive blog posts from a popular crime blog, I loved this mix of perspectives, it's a solid way to add interest to the already interesting story. Katie and Nathan are a very effective and dynamic team having solved many cases together over the years, but each is broken and suffering in their own way. Cracks are starting to appear in their relationship, although I hope that they continue their solid partnership in the upcoming additions to the series.

Breakneck pace and a thoroughly intriguing plot makes this such a fast and easy read, and I always love it when a book has the power to make the reader deem every character as possibly untrustworthy. Hollin's expertly uses misdirection and red herrings aplenty to send you swiftly down towards many dead ends. This is a twisted, dark and super exciting read that held my interest with each turning of the page. Highly recommended.

Many thanks to Bookouture for an ARC. I was not required to post a review, and all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

I am sorry I really struggled with this book. I decided to give this series a second chance. I just could not warm to the writing style or the characters.

Thank you to Netgalley for my copy.

I received a free e-copy of The Goodnight Song (Detective Rhodes and Radley #2) by Nick Hollin from NetGalley for my honest review.

I think I might have enjoyed this book more if I had read the first book in the series. I understood that you didn't need to read the previous book to enjoy it. I disagree as I feel like I was missing a lot of information about the characters in this book and had a difficult time connecting with the characters.

Katie and Nathan have been hiding in Wales since their last case. One of their team dies and they have to go back to London.

The book is told from the points of view of Katie and Nathan. They are both damaged and find that things aren't as they seem. The closer they get to the killer the more they question their working relationship and it puts them in more danger.

I really think this would have been a better book if I had read the first so I am going to give it the benefit of the doubt and give it 3 stars instead of two. It was just hard to keep up with what was happening and what had happened.

I did enjoy this book but I wonder if I would have enjoyed it more if I had read the first book prior. It is always hard when you read a book out of the series. Sometimes it doesn't matter but I did get the sense from this book that it would have been helpful. However, it caught my intrigue and enjoyment enough that I would go back and read the first book so that says something! In this series I particularly enjoy the partnership between the two main characters and would be interested to see how this develops further.

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for letting me read The Goodnight Song (A Detective Rhodes and Radley crime thriller)
by Nick Hollin for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

My first time reading that author.

It was good but not great. For some reason I found it hard to follow and get into. It was a bit slow at first. The parts of Nathan's journal were a bit annoying to me, too long. And the first person POV / third person POV were confusing.
I did like that there were secrets, you were wondering who might be involved... things aren't as they seem... Until the end!

Profiler Nathan Radley and DI Katie Rhodes return to London after their friend and colleague is murdered in the same way as one of the victims from a previous case.

I love crime fiction, particularly police procedurals. But I gave up with this one.

It may have been because I hadn't already read the preceding story. This immediately disadvantaged me, because the narrative of this one is so heavily reliant on the previous tale, and I had to try and piece together what had already happened to work out what was going on.

I didn't warm to the characters, or find them believable or intriguing.

I liked the idea presented in the story but ultimately I didn’t care about the characters and the writing wasn’t as tight as I would’ve liked

This is the second book in the series and sometimes they work as a stand alone and others, not so much. This one does, BUT, I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had the details from the first. There are a lot of characters and at times it was confusing but again the lack of background contributed to this...

The plot and writing was good. There were some twists. The characters are interesting, dark and flawed. I was happy with the conclusion. I will think about the next but maybe after I check out the first...

Thanks to NetGalley, the author, and Bookouture for a copy in exchange for a review.

Sometimes bad things can lead to good ones ...

I have not read the first part and I regret it. You can read this one as a stand alone, but I would advise readers to start with the first one. Of course, it's not inpossible to pick the story up. I do believe it's better to see the whole especially concerning the main characters and what happened to them before.

This book had me thoroughly confused and I mean this in a good way. I was constantly switching between suspects. 'Is it her? No, it has to be him! Oh, no, it must be her then?' I really could not put my finger on it and I could not make my mind up. I was surprised by the outcome. (again in a good way)

The story is also about loss, manipulation, revenge, mistrust, but the author also added some good emotions to the mix as well : friendship and love.

Thank you, Nick Hollin, Bookouture and Netgalley

3.5 to 4.0 stars. The Goodnight Song is the second book in the DS Rhodes and Radley series and I haven't read the first instalment. The books are closely interlinked with all current events flowing on from the first book, so I would recommend anyone keen to read the series start at the beginning. It still worked quite well as a standalone, with good pace through most of the book. The Goodnight Song sees Radley and Rhodes come out of their self-imposed exile in Scotland when a killer targets their old friends and implicates them in the murders. Drawn out to clear their names and stop the offender, contending with a blogger who is revealing stolen pages from Radley's old diary predicting the exact details of the crimes, unable to trust anyone, the stakes are high and personal.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of The Goodnight Song, the second novel to feature DS Katie Rhodes and criminal profiler Nathan Radley.

Katie and Nathan have been hiding out in Wales after the dramatic events of their last case but the death of one of their team brings them back to London, suspected of his murder. They soon learn that the case is more complicated than they could imagine with its roots in the past and danger in the present.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Goodnight Song which had me glued to the pages from start to finish. It should be noted that much of the novel makes reference to the previous novel in the series, Dark Lies, and some of the plot elements evolve from it so I would recommend reading it first. It is a roller coaster of a read with the killer always one step ahead of them and leaving them unable to trust anyone. Looking back from the end I find it hard to understand exactly how the killer knows so much about their movements and it isn't explained but I got so caught up in the excitement of the plot that it didn't register at the time. I take that as a sign of a good read. The novel is full of misdirection and suspicion with Katie being rather irrational and jumping to conclusions at every turn. It seems authentic in her current state of mind.

The novel is told from the points of view of Nathan and Katie with interjections from a crime blog. I really like this format, the mixture of the traditional and the modern. The blog, with its exclusives, gives the narrative a broader slant and perspective and moves the plot forward in a credible way.

Much of the novel depends on the characters of Nathan and Katie who have been a wry effective team over the years. Now they are broken individuals with a distance growing between them. Katie is damaged both physically and emotionally from the events of Dark Lies and now finds it hard to rein in her savage temper. Nathan is psychologically damaged from the horror of the crime scenes he has visited and his own demons. I find his personal tics the least convincing part of the novel and could feel my eyes rolling at some points.

The Goodnight Song is a good, exciting read which I have no hesitation in recommending.

#TheGoodnightSongAdetectiveRhodesAndRadleyCrimeThriller #NetGalley This is the second book in the series and having really enjoyed the first book I was looking forward to reading this one. It did not disappoint. Although, I think if you have not read the first book you will not enjoy this one as much as the two are very much connected. Whilst this book does give plenty of flashback's to what happened in the previous book , you would enjoy it much more if you have read the previous book. fast paced, lots of action and multiple twists and turns - all things requisite for a great crime novel. I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to more books in the series - although a new subject matter will probably be required!

A police officer is found dead... pages from a diary that predict the exact death are posted online by Nathan Radley, our prime suspect. But did he commit the crime? Detective Radley, Nathan’s partner, was with him the night of the police officers murder. However as more attacks are happening and they are all in this diary, Radley can’t help but wonder if he has something to do with it. I loved the concept of the story, but have never read any other books from this author or from the series. This is not a great stand alone book. You miss a lot of the history from the characters and about the detectives themselves. While the author has a great story telling ability and can weave together the plot in a great way so that it keeps the reader guessing, it still lacks things that are necessary for the reader to completely understand what is going on.
I give it 4 stars ⭐️ out of 5.

Some books belong to series but can be read as standalone novels. There may be details to reward longtime readers, but newbies won't feel left out. While reading The Goodnight Song, I was missing too much background information from the first volume, which I haven't read; not only plot details about Nathan's serial killer brother, but also about Nathan and Katie's personalities and relationship between them and with other characters. The story begins with them both in hiding, after barely surviving a deadly attack. When Nathan's old journal resurfaces and somebody starts actually committing the crimes that he imagined to get rid of his demons, they both need to return. And this is what I think could have been handled better, since I was missing the backstory and their motivations were not too clear, it made it hard for me to relate to the characters. The story did catch my attention: the murders were gruesome and the investigation full of twists and red-herrings, but without connecting to Nathan and Katie, it was hard to be invested in their story.
I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Thank you, NetGalley/Bookouture!

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for this arc.

This is the second book of a series and I have not read the first one. As a "stand alone" read, this really didn't work for me. While enough of the action of the first book was presented here to "catch up"... I was just not able to engage with any of the characters. That maybe also due to my finding the writer "telling" more than "showing" the story and the characters.

While this should have been a fast paced read for me, the "Blogger's" entries (from a first person POV) interrupting the action of Katie and Nathan's story (third person POV) very distracting. Overall it left me scratching my head trying to find the logic and rationality of the story.

As I said earlier, I was unable to engage with any of the characters. I found Kathie, Nathan and Sam all to be one-note, presented as only their individual obsessions and "quirks". Oh, Katie went mooning off from time to time over the involuntary loss of her reproductive organs but that only "made her more determined to get the criminals off the streets". Which she tried to do in a very rash way, operating only off emotion. Which seemed to be the only was she operated. That didn't make sense for me.

In all fairness (because his first book got good ratings). I may not be the best reader for this book at this time. One of my dogs has been sick and I've been in a state of suspended animation waiting on test results to come back from the vet's office. I'm likely to be distracted trying to read any book at this time.

It all began with DARK LIES. Nathan Radley is one of the best criminal psychiatrists on the police force ... or at least, he was. The latest case that he and Katie Rhodes worked sent them both over the edge. They took off, found a remote location, threw the phones and television and radio in the garbage and have been trying to heal.

Another death has brought them back. A senior police official, mentor to Katie, is found floating face down in the Thames. His killing is very much like the last case they had worked.

Nathan becomes the prime suspect, although he was miles and miles away and constantly in the company of Katie. Old diary pages ... written by Nathan many years ago ... begin showing up .. detailing the murder exactly.

Their investigation into this murder leads them both to question how they feel .. about their working relationship ..and their working together. Katie is known for gathering evidence and her logical deduction, while Radley is known for his gift of climbing into a killer's mind.

And the closer they get to the killer, the more danger they face. Suspects abound .. someone close to the investigation? A previous killer who miraculously disappeared? or is it actually Nathan?

To get the whole story, I highly recommend starting with DARK LIES. You won't be disappointed!

Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / Netgalley for the advanced digital copy of this crime thriller. It was a pleasure to read. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

A dead cop. A terrible accident? Not according to information that appears online, linking Detective Nathan Radley to not only that death, but others as well. As his own department begins to investigate him for murder, Nathan’s partner Katie Rhodes does all she can to prove his innocence. This is a solid police procedural series and fans will not be disappointed with this latest entry
