Nice idea for a story, although a bit conventional - good guy in the music business uncovers scrupulous deals and mafia involvement and risks falling prey to the bad guys, but... However, the plot lacks logic and the characters are only half done. Also, we‘re never told the whole story: Sammie, the singer mentioned in the PR summary advertising the book, actually does not matter at all, she‘s nothing but a teaser; Neal, the „spy“, remains and incomplete character, his role in the novel is unclear and he rather interrupts the story than enhancing the suspense; and the author can’t seem to decide, whether Tessa is a successful business woman or a weak mother of two sons, who - as we are told - hate each other, but - as we read - get along very well. And there are much more serious flaws in a book that remains in the limbo between being romance or thriller: a FED agent sitting in a car and observing for days on end - alone? Without any backup? A couple warned that someone might take their lives - and yet they walk into a dark underground garage at night, and don‘t run, when they see the only other car - a black sedan? Blood donated by a drug user for a transfusion in the age of AIDS/HIV (and, of course, other diseases) - untested? A man shot, and capable of leaving the hospital to take revenge after less than a week? There are too many inconsistencies to really keep the reader from skipping pages, in order to quickly finish, I‘m afraid. A pity, actually, because the idea to write a novel about the LA music industry and the illegal deals involved is, indeed, a charming one. However, you have to be a true novelist to write the book.
