This is a crazy and entertaining read.

I didn't know where this novel was going me when I started reading, but the ride took me all around and left me spinning. Matt and Marie have been married for over 20 years and to celebrate their upcoming anniversary they go on a hiking trip where Marie accidentally falls off a cliff, or so says Matt.

Matt becomes a suspect and his chances of being cleared by the police are diminished when the detectives find out his first wife died under murky circumstances.

I enjoyed the story but found it convoluted at some points. My favorite character was Loren, one of the detectives who is good at his job but also great at cracking jokes. The novel is narrated from different points of view including Matt and the detectives working the case.

Overall, I liked the novel and recommend it to readers of mysteries and thrillers.

"So here’s the thing: if you want to kill your wife, don’t. Don’t kill her, don’t touch her. Ditch the bitch if you have to, get on with your life. Or make it work. But kill her? Nope. You want the opposite of Nike’s advice: Just don’t do it. Because sooner or later, no matter how careful you think you’ve been, you’ll get caught."

Is he that unlucky in love, or is he a killer? Matthew has lost two wives under suspicious conditions. Detectives Spengler and Loren seem to think this is a cut-and-dried case, but the surprises just keep on coming.

If you have had a nasty divorce and want to read a novel of what you dreamed of doing to your ex, give this one a try. It's a chilling alternative.

A dark and enjoyable read that surprised this reader!

Thank you to Flat Iron Books and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to review this book without expectation of a positive review.

4.5 stars! I started guessing the first twist about halfway through but didn't see the other ones coming. I really enjoyed this book and it's a quick read. Highly recommend if you're into thrillers and/or psychological books

As Long As We Both Shall Live is JoAnn Chaney’s second Mystery/Thriller, but it’s my first read from her. As far as thrillers go, I thought this was a fantastic story. I don’t read the genre often, so I don’t consider myself a thriller ‘connoisseur,’ but I do know a good story when I read one. And I will say - this started a chain reaction of picking up more thrillers, and they sugsequent ones have been so good, too! I feel like it’s refreshed my reading life.

Maybe someone who reads a lot of thrillers could have predicted what happens in this one, but there were twists and turns that I did not see coming, and once I hit a certain point in this book, I could not put it down. This is a story about Matt, who lost a wife years ago under suspicious circumstances, and now that his second wife has fallen off a cliff, he is once again under suspicion. From an outsider’s perspective, Matt and Marie have the perfect marriage. But when detectives start digging, that is, of course, not the case. When Matt finds out his past has come to light, he knows he’s in trouble. The pacing of this story was fantastic, and it was written so that circumstances were constantly changing; everything you thought you knew you suddenly doubted, and you wonder what the heck Matt and Marie were even doing together. They had such a unique relationship, and not in a good way. It was so interesting to read about, and just one more thing that kept me glued to the pages. There were two storylines sort of running alongside each other, and while the second one bothered me at first and felt like it was taking away from the first storyline, I came to really enjoy it and wanted to know what the heck was going on. I didn't find any of the characters in this book particularly likeable, but I also don't think I was supposed to.

All in all, I thought this was a gripping read, and I'll read more from this author. Now that I have more recently released thrillers under my belt, I can say with complete assurance that this book is worth the read. And it will keep you in a tailspin until the very end.

3.5 stars. Right away we’re told that it looks like Matt killed his first wife twenty years ago when she confronted him about his affair, but he gets off. Now, Matt is married to Marie and they have two daughters. They are having the sort of challenges you might have in a long-term relationship and go for a hike in the mountains. It appears that Matt might be responsible for her death, so now I was rooting for the detectives to get to what really happened. There are some nice twists, but ultimately, I didn’t love this book.

I appreciate NetGalley giving me the opportunity to review this novel..

I was on the edge of my seat for this entire book! I really enjoyed it. The husband was so dislikable and while there are times when you sympathize with the wife, you also despise her too! I enjoyed the secondary story too with Detective Loren. He was the surprise in the story. I will definitely read her again!

Full of twists and red herrings, this is a domestic thriller that manages to hold its secrets until the very end. Author JoAnn Chaney manages to write a fast moving murder mystery that feels almost familiar until it becomes clear that it isn’t remotely recognizable. Something wicked is happening in this tale and the fun is in trying to read fast enough to satisfy your growing curiosity. I received my copy from the publisher through NetGalley.

Crazy thriller abut married couple Matt and Marie who have been together for twenty years when Marie falls off a cliff on a hike. Was it just an accident? Or was it a murder? Eventually the police find out that Matt's first wife was murdered. Then, of course, Matt is the first and most obvious suspect because he was with her and he is her husband....what is the deal with him anyways? Is he that unlucky? OR did he kill both of his wives? Definitely a twisted psychological thriller that was not very easily figured out. I definitely enjoyed this one! Thanks so much for the ARC!!!

When a man wants to get rid of his wife, what’s he to do? Does he divorce her or kill her? That was Matt Evans’ dilemma. Matt Evans was a handsome intelligent man, and women just gravitated to him. He would constantly cheat on his wife, until one day she found him in their home with his new little fling. Janice pulled out the gun to kill him. What happened? The fire department was called, as their home was burning down. Where was Janice? Matt was able to get out. Where’s his wife. The detective asked him numerous questions, while he was in the hospital. Matt, being the seasoned sales person and liar, was able to evade most of the questions with cryptic answers. Still the detective kept at it for weeks, while Matt was convalescing in the hospital. He finally gave up and called Matt a liar. Some 20 years later, Matt is remarried to Marie with two grown women in college. She wants to surprise Matt with an anniversary gift of a romantic getaway and hike in the Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. They arrive there and have a quaint cottage to stay in. They take the trail and start hiking the following day. What could possibly go wrong? His wife is missing. Did he murder her? The authorities are called to the site, along with the crime lab. Matt still professes that he doesn’t know where his wife is. He said he fears she fell over the ledge and drowned in the unforgiving river below. What happened to her? Did he kill her? Will the police find out what happened to the other wife years ago? The new detective doesn’t buy his story. What would his motive be? Who is the Antagonist here? Who is the protagonist here? This book is dual themed and really keeps the reader totally immersed in the book until the very end. The ending is not what you would expect. It’s even better. I truly enjoyed this book very much!!

Lots of twists and turns in this story about a not so "made in heaven" marriage. The characters were well drawn out. The plot moved along without much in the way of slow spots.

In addition to the murder mystery aspect, Detectives Spengler and Loren had back stories. Spengler's was less well defined other than the usual complaints about men not treating her equally. Loren, on the other hand, had a secret from the past that interacted well with the main plot. And he was a hoot. While some may find his comments crude and distasteful, I thought they were very creative. :)

Overall, a well written book. My thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review.

oh my god. This is one of the best thrillers I have ever read. I really didn't know what was really happening the entire time. I had a whisper of what it might be, but boy, was I wrong. It was a ride. I literally got up at 530 this morning to finish it. The twist that comes around 70% .... it was a huge shocker, and I did not see it coming for a mile. Whew. This is going on my all-time favorite list as well as my best books of 2019 list.

Huge thanks to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for a copy of the ARC.

A twisty turny mystery that you will think you have figured out several times and then realize you might not know anything.

I liked it. There were (many) twists and turns and the main story line involving devious spouses Marie and Matt was very good. The detectives investigation was interesting but their individual side plots were just so-so. They did not go deep enough to really warrant the narrative being told. Det. Spengler's detour was especially superficial-we get it-she was tough. Det. Loren's was a bit more complicated as we wonder for a while if he was a murderer himself.. but, overall the two detectives and their lives did not add much for me.
However, I still think this was a solid thriller with some suspenseful moments.

Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for a chance to read and review.

I have to admit, when I began this book I was unimpressed. Another book about failing marriages, cheating spouses, one getting away with murder, etc etc. And then there was a switch and a twist and I was pulled along on an amazing ride of deceit, intrigue, and foul play.

I did question the supplementary storyline of Loren but in the end I suppose it fit in okay. I'm still not positive it was totally necessary and it felt a bit more like the author needed to add 10,000 more words so this was woven in.

overall, great story, loved the characters, loved to hate the characters (always a bonus)

What a good book! so many twists and turns.
Matt and Marie have been married for 24 years with two daughters. They go hiking and Marie falls off the cliff. Or did she? We find out quickly that Mat’s first wife was killed. What is going on? Is it Matt? The love/hate relationship between the two of them is fascinating and drew me immediately
This story has a secondary story which includes the detectives that are investing the accident. I kept ready think I have it all figured out but then another twist. The plot and story kept me reading.
I really enjoyed it. If you like a good writing and a plot you will not see coming read this book.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book from Net Galley.

First let me say that I made the mistake of starting this book the day before my longest hike ever and became completely freaked out by Chaney's apt descriptions of how you start to feel near the end of a day of hiking an how easy it is for an accident to occur. I promptly stopped reading until a few days later when I was out of the mountains. :)

This book definitely had a big Gone Girl vibe to it as you switched between husband and wife's perspective and nothing was quite as it seems. I liked learning more about the detectives on the case and seeing their backstories. Due to the book keeping me guessing, I gave it 5 stars and will be interested to see more by Chaney in the future.

I just finished As Long As We Both Shall Live by Joann Chaney. I began the book thinking it was headed in one direction but it took a left turn and ended up being something else. It was a good book, I enjoyed reading it. When it started, I figured the story would focus on the wife, Marie and the trouble in her marriage. I was wrong.

Matt shoves Marie off the edge of a cliff- maybe- and moving forward its more about the detectives trying to discover where Marie’s body is, did she really die? What’s going on with Matt, anyway and how did his first wife die?

Here’s the plot:

“My wife! I think she’s dead!” Matt frantically tells park rangers that he and his wife, Marie, were hiking when she fell off a cliff into the raging river below. They start a search, but they aren’t hopeful: no one could have survived that fall. It was a tragic accident.

But Matt’s first wife also died in suspicious circumstances. And when the police pull a body out of the river, they have a lot more questions for Matt.

Detectives Loren and Spengler want to know if Matt is a grieving, twice-unlucky husband or a cold-blooded murderer. They dig into the couple’s lives to see what they can unearth. And they find that love’s got teeth, it’s got claws, and once it hitches you to a person, it’s tough to rip yourself free.

So what happens when you’re done making it work?

Prepare yourself that this isn’t traditional domestic suspense but more about the detectives looking into Matt’s past and present.

This novel is out now, buy it here.

What a crazy ride - totally unexpected twists and turns. I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would - it is a great domestic thriller. It will keep you guessing the entire time and you won't want to put it down. The only thing I found unnecessary was the subplot with Detective Loren - it really didn't add anything to the story. I would have preferred more information on the Evans' family dynamic - it was odd that their daughters seemed so disinterested in their mother's disappearance. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good thriller that will surprise you.

There is so much going on in this book. It the being I had no idea what was going on. Slowly things are explained. You know what happened but not exactly why or if it is the truth. I was hooked. Except for the detectives side story that was just not needed. I think it would have worked better without it.

I definitely recommend this book if you are a lover of thriller.

This book is so clever! The story centers around Matt, his first wife Janice, and his second wife Marie. It is a terrific story with so many twists right from the start, that to say anything more about the plot would be spoilers. Highly recommended!
