I found some really interesting information in this book, but it felt a little too scholarly for me so I had a hard time getting through it.

The author's painstaking research and attention to detail is obvious in the writing of this book. There were many facts that I only discovered after reading this!

Not an easy read with regards to style. I enjoyed Moore's perspective but thought that her experience in journalism bogged down her voice. I do think this is an essential read. I've had little direct exposure to Chicago but the times I was there I felt incredibly drawn to the city as a whole even as any time I expressed this view I was told how bad that some areas were from people who had never lived there. I was eager to read Moore's book because I knew that her perspective would be illuminating and give me a chance to see the city through the eyes of someone with a native perspective. That said, it was a difficult book to read because I think Moore felt it necessary to justify with statistics and hard facts aspects of her experiences. I understood the purpose but as a result I found it hard to move through the book. The topics of segregation are not easy reads but I thought the style made this book a more challenging read to recommend to people who are more interested in memoir than history books. That said, it is worth the effort.

I have always been fascinated with Chicago, so I really wanted to read this book. I hoped for a good read and recieved one. Very infomrative and well written. Housing is in the fore front of this book. iwas amazing to read about the family of Lorraine Hansberry. The author also touches on other subjects which only adds to this wonderful read. Thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the ARC of this book. Although I received the book in this manner, it did not affect my opinion of this book nor my review.
