The Dysasters is a great fit for young adult readers who enjoy fast-paced stories about teenagers discovering their unique superhero-like abilities tied to the elements, as they navigate an exciting and dangerous world.

Not the best work from these two authors. You would expect them to grow after years of putting out several Marked series books but nope. Even PC Cast's previous trilogy with two spin offs were better. I should have DNFed this but I didn't. I found the book entirely lack luster from the prints to the world to the characters. Kuddos for keeping the voice consistent though.

Having read P.C and Kristin's Casts first series, I wanted to give this a try. Sadly I could not finish and I think thier writing ,since the tail end of the House of Night series, has really failed to engage me.

Truly wonderful, it brought all the feels. Once again, I find myself swept away by the writing team P.C. and Kristin Cast. I couldn’t put the book down. The plot was well-paced. The dialogue flowed naturally. The characters were well-rounded. It was so good, it left me with a book hangover.

Thank you so much to NetGalley, P.C. & Kristin Cast, and St. Martin’s Press for giving me the opportunity to read and share my honest thoughts and opinions with others.

So first off, when I first heard that P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast were co-writing a brand new series for us I was over the moon. I absolutely adore the books these ladies write together. In case you don't know, the mother/daughter author duo wrote The House of Night series which was a wildly popular vampire/paranormal series in the early 2000's when vampires were all the rage and I devoured every single book and novella in that series. I own them all and have them displayed proudly on my shelves. So when I saw Dystasters, I was excited to dive into a new series from two authors I was familiar with and loved back in the day. The concept of this book was EXTREMELY intriguing to me. A group of teens that were genetically modified are able to control the weather and elements, it's something that is 100% up my alley. Majority of this book is told through dialogue or the characters talking out loud to themselves and sometimes those conversations were cringe-worthy for lack of a better word, but I still overall enjoyed the concept of spoken inner monologues as I have them with myself often. The characters themselves fell relatively flat for me, their growth is pretty minimal in this, but I have hope we will get to know the characters more in the following books. This book felt a lot more juvenile than I think I was hoping for, so I definitely think it will appeal to the younger side of YA readers. As for what I did enjoy, besides liking the overall concept of the book, this book definitely has all the trope-y superhero vibes. I don't read books like this very often so it was a nice change of pace. Plus, this book includes illustrations so it gives it a nice graphic novel touch without being overpowering if graphic novels are not your thing. It was definitely super cool to be able to see the characters brought to life in that way since the writing kind of stunted them. The pacing throughout this story was also done very well. There weren't really any parts of the story that dragged and once the action started it was so easy to fly through the rest of the book. As for the ending, I was pretty happy with it as well. I think it leaves a great setup for the next book without having too much of cliffhanger, I don't know how many more major cliffhangers my heart can take! All in all, although I did struggle with the writing and liking the characters, the concept and plot of this book was definitely enough to keep me intrigued to see where the characters will end up next!

I did not like this and would not recommend it, I quit reading about 15% in because the plot was incredibly boring

What an epic story!!!!!! What can I say about this story? The characters are amazing! Dynamic. Realistic. And relatable. The plot was absolutely amazing! My attention was held the entire time. Twists. Turns. Suspense. I love the entire story!!!! I was sad when I finished. Amparo has an amazing story!!!!

Rating: 🌟🌟 (2/5 stars).

I have personally never read anything by P.C. Cast or Kristen Cast. It might be a surprise to some people but I have never read the house of night series; I guess it wasn´t that big here in the Netherlands or I am just oblivious to that fact. Since these authors have had such a huge impact on the YA community I was pretty interested in reading their latest novel. Also, I am pretty much a sucker for anything superheroes related so I couldn´t pass this opportunity of reading and reviewing this book. And that´s what I did.

The story is basically about two teenagers who unexpectedly meet one another during a crazy circumstance a hurricane. Some crazy things went down and the two teenagers, a girl called Foster and a boy called Tate, are forced to flee with one another after finding out they have the power to control. But the main reason why they are forced to flee is that some crazy fantastic four like people who can control the elements are after them and want to use the two teenagers as a cure. But what if Tate and Foster aren´t the only teenagers out there with elemental power and who are linked together? And can they escape the evil fantastic four (haha or as they call them fucktastic four)? Well, you either have to read the book or my review to find out. Haha, I would suggest reading the book because that could make more sense than my review at times ;) Yes, this was a terrible kind of plug, which will basically be the only one I am going to use.

To give my non-spoiler related thoughts here are some of my opinions about this book: it was definitely a very fast paced novel, it has a pretty cover, it is interesting, it is not the most unique book out there and it contains some tropes and stereotypes, not the most developed characters or relationships, the book is also very easy to read since the writing style isn´t that difficult to understand and it would have been a book I would have really loved in around 2012 and 2013. I do know I am not the target audience of this book. I have been into YA books for seven years and I have read quite some of them and this just didn´t feel that unique or original to me. However, I do think this book is a great fit for someone who is just getting into the YA genre. To more experienced readers, like myself, I would say that you probably should pass on this book. Below this image, my spoilery thoughts and opinions will begin.

I love the illustrations that are in this book. I personally wasn't expecting there to be any illustrations in the book, so I was pleasantly surprised when I found out there were. I'm such a sucker for illustrations and art and I think it really added something to the story.

The writing style of this book is really easy to read and pretty standard. Also, to me, it never sounded like the book was written by two people. The writing style was really coherent, which is always a good thing. Another element I really liked about this book was how fast-paced the story was. The pages were flying by and it was really an easy read.

Unfortunately, I wasn't a fan of the characters. Our main character Foster and Tate fell both flat for me. They really felt one dimensional and they read like characters I've read about so many times before. They didn't feel original or that fleshed out. In all honesty, they were such stereotypes. Also from the moment they met one another I knew they were going to be each other's love interest. They don't really have any chemistry and their romance really feels forced. I simply don't see it and the romance also sort of happens out of nowhere. I knew they were going to be each other's romantic partner but it just happened suddenly out of the blue. Their relationship makes zero sense and isn't even developed that well. Besides both of them sounded very childish at times. These characters are both eighteen years old but they don't behave like actual teenagers. Giving characters nicknames like Nighthawk, Dickie or Strawberry made me really cringe. It all just sounds too childish. But it can even be worse. Tate literally calls his grandfather G-pa. Why? Seriously why? Who the actual fuck ever calls their grandfather G-pa? Every time I read the word G-pa I was ready to explode because of all the cringe I was feeling. Like dude please stop with that. I'm now forever traumatized by the word G-pa. This will definitely haunt me in my dreams tonight.

I'm also a bit confused about two characters called Finn & Sabine. Are they supposed to be teenagers? Young adults? In their twenties? Or actual adults? I have a hard time pinpointing their age. Like if they are actual adults their interactions with Tate and Foster are hella weird. But if they are teenagers/young adults or in their twenties, their relationship to Cora would be weird and that would suggest Sabine was pregnant at a really young age. Just call me confused. Okay, apparently they are in their twenties and you can still call me confused.

Oooh, I totally forgot about Charlotte. I liked how they put a transgender character in the story but omg they could have handled "the reveal" so much better. Now I got a bad taste in my mouth when I read Charlotte's birth name is Charles. This could have been done better and more respectful. Charlotte's grandma was the cutest though.

However, I did like how this book had multiple pov's and that you could distinguish them from one another. I also really liked how you got the point of view from the good guys and the bad guys. This really added more depth to the novel. Only one villain I didn't really like and that was doctor Rick. He just felt like a stereotypical villain who was just evil for the sake of being evil. But then none of the characters are that well developed so I should have seen that coming.

Something else that really annoyed me was when Tate was talking about his favorite books. Of course, the dude loooooves Ray Bradbury, I expected nothing else but omg all references to young adult books were too much for me to handle. Not only were those references pointless, but they also made me cringe real fast. The cringe was almost just as bad as reading G-pa one more fucking time. Authors please just stop with over referencing. This is an actual thing. We're all basically over all the pop culture references. No more Harry Potter, Hamilton or other YA references. AND NO MORE SINGING FOR TATE AND FOSTER PLEASE. The idea was cool and cute but the execution was not and of course, the songs had to be some oldies.

ALSO, WHY DID THIS BOOK HAD SOME TYPICAL YA TROPES TOO? The I didn't realize I was holding my breath line is sooo 2011/2013. We now live in the year 2019 and we are so over that stupid line. Besides NOBODY IN THE REAL WORLD OR IN REAL LIFE DIDN'T REALISE THEY HOLD THEIR REATH. And the dead parents' trope, of course, had to be there too.

Omg is that doctor Rick serious? I really hate ignorant people and he is being so transphobic towards Charlotte. Her gender 100% does matter and is not irrelevant. Calling her it is even more offensive. Also, why is it that every time Charlotte is mentioned the authors keep telling us that she is transgender?

Is every pair going to be male and female and will all of them be in a relationship with their second half? Please no to that and I'm already so against to a Bastien and Charlotte relationship.

I think the best part about this book for me was Tate and Fosters plane ride. Just like Foster I myself am not that fond of planes and flights so I really related with her fear. I was also really engrossed when the plane was crashing. This was really written well and I actually felt the fear and panic the flight attendants were feeling. Seriously that part was terrifying and I seriously hope I will never ever be in a situation like that. And I wouldn't be able to stay calm like Foster, I would probably be freaking the fuck out and end up dying because of that. Damn, I really hate flying and planes.

And suddenly G-pa is getting a chapter too and guess what it's called: FUCKING G-PA. For Christ's sake please save me from ever reading the word G-pa again.

Mark the king of sarcasm and who is actually the softest cinnamon roll out there. He is such a teddy bear. And damn that grandpa is apparently really fit. Lol when I'm old that is definitely not going to be me😂

Oh my god, Charlotte you're a hero. Unfortunate souls would be the best song to use when you wake up or talk to your homophobic/transphobic mother; both are super unpleasant.

Did Foster just really say she loves Tate? This couldn't have been more stereotypical and underdeveloped than before. Girl knowing someone for just three days isn't love. Go buy yourself a dictionary and look up the word love. This ain't it girl.

I did really like the last section/the ending of the book. It was action-packed and it wasn't something I envisioned from the start.

I would only recommend this book to readers who are new to the YA genre, because if you have read a good amount of books in this genre there is a big chance that this book will end to dissapoint you. This book did really dissapoint me and there were more things I didn´t like than I actual liked. It was an interesting experience and the book was pretty meh. Eventhough it did provoke some strong emotions in me (basically strong DISLIKE emotions). In all honesty, not really worth the read and I am not going to continue with the series.

*** Note I do not own any of the art work. All of the art work is part of the promotion marterial of this book and is owned by WednesdayBooks. So I guess art credits to them. ***

Having read many of the Casts past books, I pretty much knew what to expect when I started reading this one. This book followed many of the Casts old cliches, and many YA cliches as well. In the past I've had a problem with the relationships in books written by the Casts. They are borderline, if not outright, manipulative and unhealthy, but written in a way that makes them seem "desirable," which is not a good thing for young readers to be reading about. The relationship between the main characters in this novel followed the same patterns. This novel follows the outline of fantasy books from years ago. Parents die, main character discovers powers, and so on and so forth. Ultimately, this was not my favorite Cast book, but I will still look into their books in the future, especially if they were to take the dive into the Adult Fantasy genre.

This is a YA fantasy featuring teenagers who were genetically altered as embryos to have special powers . The main characters of this book in the series are Foster , a very independent ,smart young woman and Tate , a brawny football player who both were bonded to Air . The teenagers are unaware of their powers and are being pursued by the genius who created them.
The book started out with a bang!!! Loved the premise . It was quite exciting and got me hooked . Once that first exciting part happened it started to be very predicable and the dialogue was unrealistic in places . I would read the second book as the premise is quite unique . The ending seemed a little rushed and seemed to be tied up a little too neatly.
I would continue the series as I want to see where the authors are going with the plot line .

This book sounded really cool with the premise of people with special abilities, I am always a sucker for those kinds of dystopians. This book was just way too full of typical YA tropes and I did not want to waste my time on it when I could be reading something better.
I am giving it two stars because the illustrations were really cool though.

This was an interesting read. I really want to give a 3.75 star rating, but 4 stars it'll get on Goodreads. This was definitely an action packed YA sci-fi story. It was definitely fast paced, but that meant there wasn't much for character development, especially with so many different characters to follow. The writing was pretty awesome, I really enjoyed the drama and action scenes.

The story follows 2 main characters and several other characters. I enjoyed each character for this being the first novel, but I wished there was more to knowing each character. Hopefully that comes as the story progresses.

The first book focuses on Foster and Tate who have the power of air. They were both spunky and butt-heads. I enjoyed their romance, but wish there was more to them growing as characters and a couple. However, considering this was fast paced, it flowed pretty well.

The addition of Charlotte and Bastien towards the end was cool. Especially with their element. I'm excited to see more of them in the sequel.

The Core Four: Eve, Matthew, Mark and Luke seemed to have been separate characters. They all seemed to work well with their given elements, but they each are insane. I do however like Matthew and Mark. Luke is just too hot tempered and Eve needs to start coming to terms with things.

Dr. Rick is a disgusting man. The way he did his wife and how he does his children all for science is crazy. I really hope he gets what he deserves by the hands of Foster.

Overall, for a first book it's pretty okay. Will continue reading on because there is definitely potential.

I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. I have read other books by this mother and daughter duo before and I was so not ready for this book. It is the first in a new series. Tate and Foster are fun and amazing characters. They have to go through a lot to try and stop Dr. Steward. They are just the first set of group of those who have changed before birth to have a connection to element. This book made me feeling a little strange at times. What is something like this was actually possible. That is kind of scary.

Not what I expected. I found it a bit slow but the writing is really good. This is probably a case of me not being in the proper mindset for this particular storyline. I am sure fans of the authors will enjoy it.

The Dysasters by P.C. Cast was the first book by Cast I have read in years. I for some reason could not get into this book as well as I did her books in the past. I don't think this has anything to do with Cast I think this was on me as my reading taste have changed over the years.

Copy kindly received via NetGalley and Pan MacMillan Aus in exchange for an honest review.

I have only read PC Cast's Tales of a New World Series, so I wasn't sure how I would like this one. I am going to DNF this for now because I'm not feeling too involved in the story or the characters. Right now they just seem annoying and I don't feel invested in finding out what will happen.

I may come back to this one day, but for now it's a DNF. The storyline has promise and is a great idea, it's just not for me right now.

4 stars - a young adult read to enjoy

This story is definitely geared to the teenage market. I thoroughly enjoy P. C. Cast's works. And this work was no exception. This story progressed slowly building its world for the Dysasters.

A determined scientist interferes with the genetics of a number of babies with the altered genes being expressed at age 18. This is these teenagers story.

I have voluntarily posted a review consisting of my honest opinions. I received this product for free from Netgalley.

I usually like all the P C Cast characters. This particular book was not the one that I would immediately like and put to my shelf. The writing here appears to be more of Kristin Cast than the mother, the mother has a bit different style and sense of humor. However, it is possible that for the audience it is intended * young adult' or even younger it might appeal more than to the adult readers. Believable characters acting irrationally definitely for teenagers!

I was already hooked with the synopsis, It’s action-pacted, and all the characters are essential to the story. One night, a deadly Tornado hits at a ball game and Foster and Tate are thrown into chaos together. This is the storm that will change both their lives for good. They quickly find out that a crazy scientist is after them for their " abilities." Foster and Tate must stop Dr. Stewart and his minions before he destroys their lives and the world!!The concept of this book was intriguing. The writing felt a little bit rushed but overall it was a great read!

DNF -- The Dystasters was my first book by this writing duo and I was so very excited to read it as I had heard so many great things about their stories. Sadly, I wasn't able to get into it when I first attempted so I put it down and tried again a bit later with no success. I cannot pinpoint a reason why I was unable to get into the story or the characters other than their writing just not being for me. I would like to try them again sometime in the future, but unfortunately this title wasn't for me.
