Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.

This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience.

Holy shit! This was intense and often terrifying. I couldn't put it down. What an imagination and what extraordinary skill at storytelling.

This was a brilliant read. As soon as I started reading this book I just knew I was going to love it. Highly recommended

Apologies, completely forgot to leave feedback on this one.
Have just gone back and read this book for a second time.
Whilst it is pretty graphic even for me, it is a fabulously written book that once it gets going reels you in and gets into your head,
No hesitation in awarding five stars, after all I've read it twice.

Dark, brooding thriller with twists at every unexpected moment. Wildly addictive read. A haunting book

This creepy and atmospheric crime novel in the Scandi Noir vein reminds me of Steig Larrson's Millennium trilogy. The writing style is similar - tight, unemotional, very readable - but it lacks, thankfully, the intricate and sometimes tedious detail! The 2 MCs even remind me of Lisbeth a little as does the complex and satisfyingly convoluted plot. And while not quite as multilayered as Millennium it is just as much grim and gory fun! It is just hugely enjoyable and entertaining, a book to be devoured in 2 or 3 ravenous bites. The action is non-stop, the tension builds nicely, the body count stays in the realm of the horrifying (some can get just ridiculous) and there's plenty of twists, turns, dead ends, red herrings and shocks. I really enjoyed the unravelling of the mystery, I hadn't worked it out at all - not even close! Loved Hess and Thulin and I'd love to see more of them. Just misses 5 stars as it does veer close to the generic at times.

Not for me I'm afraid, I found it difficult to stay engaged with the characters & plot., while the violence and gore was too much for me.

Great tense storyline throughout and wonderful translation of this novel. Really enjoyed the premise and getting to know Ness and Thulin

This novel was so gripping and engaging that I was impatient to pick it back up any time I had to put it down. I was picking it up even for 30 second breaks at work. I didn't see the twists coming or anticipate a lot of the reveals leading to such a thrilling read!

A fantastic police procedural from the writer and creator of The Killing, this is Scandi-noir, emphasis on the noir. A dark and haunting thriller, there are some scenes not for the faint of heart, though none of them are gratuitous. Recommended.

I could not get into this book. I don't like the style of writing. One minute he's on about one thing then something else pops up unrelated. Its like where did that come from? Not for me.

Being an avid reader of thrillers, particularly ones involving serial killers I had high hopes for this book. I have seen or read any of the scandi books or tv shows so had no preconceptions of where this might take me.

This was a generic, run of the mill good cop/bad cop police procedural story which did keep me entertained but not enthralled.

Not a bad read but not the best either.

Sent tingles down my spine. Had me utterly gripped, I couldn't put it down. Can't wait to read more by this author.

A nice addition to the Scandi noir catalogue. And good to read a novel by the author of The Killing.

An excellent thriller which grips you immediately with the eerie settings and crimes that take place. They seem to just keep getting better!

I really enjoyed The Chestnut Man, lots of twists and turns. A young woman is found murdered in Copenhagen, her hand was missing and a chestnut man had been left at the scene. A fingerprint on the chestnut man was that of a young girl who went missing the previous year.

Wow wow wow. This is one of my books of the year and i hate that it took me so long to read it. I know it's been compared a lot to The Killing but this definitely stands on it's own. The partnership between Hess and Thulin is superbly written, each with their own demons and secrets and seeing how things grow and develop is fascinating. I can't wait to read more by Sveistrup.
