I would recommend reading this series in order, this is book 2 and the first book, Shelter the Beginning, gives a good background. Allison is leaving her safe compound the Shelter to travel with Jesse Forbes to his original safe haven. The "flu" has left most of the human population dead and the few small factions are fighting for control and survival. This series is not my normal genre but I thought I needed something different. Fans of science fiction and end of world books will probably enjoy. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Book 2. We pick up after the Big Cats Out of the Bag reveal at the end of book one that will have a whole new dynamic going on as we continue to follow the guys and gals of Shelter. True intents now known and the motivations behind those goals revealed, we continue to follow the gang as they gear up for more threats to they're safe haven and now must contend with struggles with-in as well as with-out of they're community.
This is a well told story with the right amount of action to go along with some good characters to be admired or not, but, they make you feel. For or against, but, you care. This second book deal with the events of book one and clearly sets up the coming clash thats building as we move towards a new confrontation. New characters are added as we swell the cast that add good complications to the story. I like the whole thing for sure. Our group has been joined by some of the surviving military and must figure out they're ultimate plans. Sure, they are definitely on the same page now, as they are all threatened by the same coming danger, but, what about after? There are some small, but, disturbing signs of diverging visions of the future.

I can't remember that much happens in this book: Addy is angry at Jesse and they all go to attack Shaw's camp and free the women he keeps prisoner. There's a lot of build-up to the big event and when it happens its a bit confusing and kinda anti-climatic. It's over in about two pages and the villain does nasty things but we see only the after effects, the villain himself isn't on page enough to feel real as a character. That makes it hard to get invested in the fight against him.

I like the storyline of the series but this just continues straight on from the first book and I really think it would be better read as a whole. There's a lot about the characters sitting and thinking and a lot of it could be cut down out to make one much more exciting book. I still love the main characters though - Addy is tough and resourceful but Jesse is starting to melt her heart. And Jesse is just almost perfection, tough, strong and kind. Just what you want for a romance novel hero!

I'm still enjoying the series but the pacing is a bit off in this book and the action when it happens is confusing.

Shelter:part 2 the reckoning by Allyson young and Peri Elizabeth Scott.
Captain Jesse Forbes was understandably mistaken in his original assessment of Colonel Mitchell Stone. But his method of gathering that intel has blown up in his face.
Given Addison Longwood’s history, he knows she’ll never offer him a second chance, and working together against a common foe is going to be torture in more ways than one.
Addison hopes for the best but expects the worst as she and her fellow defenders gain reinforcements and take it to the enemy, unaware another betrayal awaits them.
Survivors change sides and lines are blurred—good guys and bad guys wear camo.
This was a fantastic read. I loved the story and the characters. Cant wait to read part three. 5*.

The strength of the book is the relationship between Addy and Jesse.
In this second instalment the decision is made to go on the offensive and the night before the battle leads the two main characters to re-assess their attraction to each other and make some form of amends.
The actual fighting scenes were quite disappointing.
What was interesting in the new reality post-plague was the impact of side effects like infertility and the lack of babies. The view this placed on women to be the child bearing future and how individual choice would play out.
Women once a part of a man’s possessions is an archaic belief but the female gender were almost programmed by society to do their bit and have children. With a modern woman at this time where civilisation was starting over; how could a strong female return to such medieval thinking unless they were subjugated and held as chattels and child rearing stock.
This is the impression of the camp they need to destroy and liberate their women. However, moving forward for Addy where the Shelter had not produced children was Jesse’s link with a more military, government background see women in a different role.
Good sci-fi as the role of women is highlighted as is what constitutes a perfect society.
Book 3 awaits, looking forward to the next instalment.

This book takes place directly after the first one and it ends up on a cliffhanger so you can be sure that I'm going to pick up the third and last book of the series to know what's going to happen next!

The drama between Addy and Jesse after she learned his motives was interesting to see. He had some groveling to do and it was kind of sweet to see him like that. I usually hate when there's an ex in books but here it was okay. (no cheating so no worries)

To be honest, I'm just not really sure what to say about this book without spoiling it for you. What I can say, it's that they finally get to fight Bridges and his men, but it's not over yet ;).

SHELTER: THE RECKONING is the second book in a series and at only 211 pages, is a quick, easy read. Allyson Young is a talented Canadian Author and has written a great number of books, some written under her own name and others under her pen name: Elizabeth Scott.

Set in a post-apocalyptic version of the United States, Addison Longwood  survived the flu-like plague that killed an estimated 90% of the world's population.

Addison lives in a camp that is set-up extremely well and is in a defensible location. The people who share the camp are all of similar dispositions, meaning that they just want to live in relative peace and are willing to do their part to keep the camp running smoothly.

Unfortunately, humans being what they are, there is always someone who wants what other people have and who would rather take it by force, than put in the work themselves.

The leader of Addy's camp, Mitchell Stone, had decided at the end of Book One that they had to try to take the fight to the bad guys. That book ended just as Addy and the other fighters left to do just that.

This second book in the series focuses mostly on the fight to rid the world of the local despot. While there are sex scenes, there are less of them in this volume.

The action is fast-paced and the story moves along at a lightening pace. Canadian Author Allyson Young does a terrific job of keeping the reader engrossed in the story.

If you are looking for a great beach read, look no further, the SHELTER Series is it.

Due to the graphic nature of some of the content, this book is not suitable for readers under the age of eighteen.

I rate SHELTER: THE RECKONING as 4 out of 5 Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐ and I highly recommend purchasing the next book in the series immediately since Book Two ends with a cliffhanger.

*Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a free copy of this book.*

This book basically takes place directly after book 1, the same tone and writing and exciting happenings. I love the worldbuilding, I wish we could explore outside of Shelter a bit more, what happened to the bones of civilization, the buildings, the old bodies, etc.

The drama between Jesse and Addy was drawn out enough to make it just right, not too quick not too long, the chemistry was pretty good, though im still not sold on how amazing addy is, she doesn't seem like a very strong main character to me, the ending action was a little bit quicker than I wanted it to be, I had to reread it a few times to know if the bad guy was dead or not,

Im moving right into book 3, I need to know how it ends.

Book 2 in the trilogy.
First of all you need to read book 1 before this one as the events follow on directly from book 1's ending. And this book ends on a cliffhanger, really not knowing what will happen next.
There was a lot going on.
Jesse has revealed his motives and he and Addy have fallen out.
She doesn't trust easily and now feels betrayed.
Its quite exciting, there are events going on in different locations so the reader changes POV a few times.
Jesse is totally devoted to Addy, it's really sweet, how this big strong guy has fallen.
There is ex drama, though no intimacy between anyone other than the Hero and heroine.
No cheating.
The ex drama adds a bit of humour as it's fun to watch Jesse squirm.
It ended and I moved straight in to book 3 as I needed to find out what will happen.
