My mistake was not having read any Rudyard Kipling before reading this book. In all honesty, I did not finish the book in its entirety. I do think its so great to see a writers experimentation prior to him fully crafting his writing mark. I am always fascinated by an author's beginning and Rudyard Kipling has a fascinating history. The problem is that I think you need to be a fan of his works or at least be familiar with them prior to reading this one. It is still really neat that this is offered for fans of his works. I think I'm going to read the Jungle Book and Kim before attempting to read this again.

Offers a perfect snap shot of its time and is full of colonial themes which do hold a historic interest of sorts. I couldn’t go as far to say I enjoyed this collection, although it was well written. I do think though it’ll please fans of the author’s previous works.

With Thanks to NetGalley and Cambridge for the ARC in exchange for a fair review.

Thank you to Cambridge University Press and Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.
It is uncanny that I just treated myself to the Audible production of ‘The Jungle Book’ a couple of weeks ago. So, I was already in the realm of Rudyard Kipling. This collection of works was interesting and worth a read - especially if you like Rudyard Kipling and Colonial themes.
I will dbe finitely be using some of these texts as examples of descriptive and narrative writing style within lessons specially when we tackle the post colonial short stories in our CIE curriculum.
