I really was entertained by this novel. Emma Shortt writes with humor and her dialogue was witty and sharp. It seemed to fit both the characters and situations. A Game of Chance is a quick sexy read. The characters are fully dimensional and layered, and I cared about their happily ever after. I would definitely read more from Ms Shortt based on the enjoyment I found in A Game Of Chance.
I received my copy through NetGalley under no obligation.

This started out strong and had me engaged, but the further I read, but somewhere around the halfway mark it felt like the story began to drag and I began to get the feeling that the ending would have a rushed sort of feel to it and my instinct was correct.

Thank you for the opportunity to read and review this title.

Unfortunately, this was one I chose not to finish. My apologies for the late notice. As I don't want my low rating to appear on the site and potentially impact the choices of other readers, I wait until after a title has been published/no longer able to be downloaded.

Inadvertently, I waited much longer than intended to give feedback for this title.

I look forward to the next title through your company!

Thanks,
Laura

Meg, that girl has some lady balls and damn she is just fierce and perfect for this book. I loved that Chance doesn’t just sit around doing nothing but is actively working on finding a solution. Put these two together and magic happens! The storyline is original and really keeps you interested in what’s going to happen next. Complex characters and situations really kept my intrigued as I read this book.

Interesting, entertaining, and all in all a great story. It has the right amount of emotions, drama, romance and fun. It has engaging characters who had plenty of passion and chemistry the whole way through this amazing book. Definitely recommend

This is my first read by author, Emma Shortt, but I have to say that the blurb completely took me in and I just had to get my hands on it.

I was absolutely and pleasantly captivated right from the beginning. Meg thinks this huge tech company, X-Tech, has stolen her work and she is on a mission to talk to the CEO and get down to the bottom of who stole her work and why.

Meg is a spunky and smart heroine that I could not get enough of. Jack was definitely a complex character with many dimensions to him. When they first meet you could already feel the chemistry between the two of them coming off the pages! I couldn’t wait to see how everything was going to play out!

It was a consuming page turner that I just couldn’t put down!

In real life, I would've given this book up long ago. But in NetGalley life, I felt the need to get through it to provide a review. So I slogged and took a break and rinsed and repeated the process of walking away and trying again. I mean, I could barely get past the 1st page and worked furiously to find other stories to read.

Characters were awful, story line was ridiculous, writing does not deserve 4 stars on Goodreads and the plausibility of tech aspects were unintelligible. And to purposefully withhold the dataset for us to discover what the solution is but have our hero figure it out at the end in such an obscure manner to tidy up loose threads was disappointing, cheap and bizarre.

Waste of time.

Very cute story, Jack/ Chance really was such a hopeless nerd that you just had to love him, he really was clueless about how people actually work, I loved Meg, she had such confidence and spontaneity, they totally complimented one another.

Something was off with this book. I started out enjoying it but my interest waned after. It could have been a great read but for me, it was just okay

This book had such potential... I loved the first few chapters.
But then, for me, the story went downhill once he properly introduces himself to Meg as a PI.

I did not finish this book.
This is my first book by this author.

Meg hid behind a building because it was directly opposite her target -X Tech Towers. Meg’s long time friend was Kelly who was there with her.Jimmy helped her get in the building. It had been almost a month since Meg realized X-Tech was stealing her work. X-Tech was one of the biggest software companies. Meg thought about the invitation to take part in the X-Tech competition she had received -that was a big deal. The company had been running the competition for years- tech startups from across the world attended the competition in hope of getting funding or a job with X-Tech. Meg didn’t get funding or a job. Meg had deeply admired X-Tech’s work. Then Meg found obscure nerd forums about her work several weeks later and it was being said it was X-Techs. This was her idea, her work. The very thing thing that had basically been her life for the last five years. Meg was going to get her work back. Meg had already tried calling and emailing , tried the legal department even the PR people. She tried every single department even the CEO direct- Jack Richards.Meg didn’t have the money for a lawyer. Jack was known as Chance to his family and friends. Chance had made himself less available as he became rich and famous. Chance doesn’t want to be in the spotlight . Chance knew this woman wasn’t part of the cleaning crew. Kate and Meg worked at Kate’s store Kit. It was a computer repair store and each took turns working on their own project when the store wasn’t busy. Meg,s goal was to finish her PHD, get a job with X Tech and develop her work into something that would change the world. Meg that she had met up with a burglar when she got to the administrative offices in the X-Tech building but it was really Chance/ Jack he was trying to find who was committing fraud and getting other peoples work illegally . Chance showed up at KIT with some bright blue flowers. Chance desperately needed “Blue on his side.Chance needed Blue to help him fid the fraud suspect. But Chance also started to harden as soon as he saw Blue he wanted her. Chance presented himself as Jack Chance, P I. Meg and Chance join forces to find out who is stealing data from small time developers and selling it to X-Tech.
I did really enjoy this book. The author wrote in such a way I didn’t feel stupid even though I don’t know a lot about computers and such. Meg did seem a little immature at times I did love Meg and Jack/Chance together and how they interacted together. This isn’t very realistic in my opinion. I loved this had duo POV of Chance and Blue. I loved all the references to games. Movies, and books. This book had me right from the beginning until the end. I really loved the characters and the ins and outs and I recommend this.

3.5 stars

Meg is determined to confront X-Tech's CEO about his company stealing her work, so she convinces one of its employees to help her sneak into the building one night. Unfortunately, she doesn't find Jack Richards, CEO, but she does find a hot guy who looks as if he's hacking into the company. When he confronts her about being in the building, she knees him and runs. Meg didn't count on being found by the hot guy, but when he proposes helping her, she can't say no. And she finds that the hot PI with muscles just might be her perfect match, even if he isn't a nerd like she is.

I thought A Game of Chance was sweet and cute and all, and I liked Jack. I just didn't connect with the story. It's a bit I don't know, immature, juvenile? I'm not sure exactly, but it just didn't do much for me. Perhaps if the timeline had been expanded, I would have gotten into the story more. A week isn't very long for a relationship to develop, so perhaps that was the problem with it - it's too rushed. And Meg is seriously annoying, like a mosquito buzzing in your ear annoying. Still, Jack is adorable, and I like the idea of two nerds hitting it off, so I can see my way to 3.5 stars.

On a side note, referring to the show, Doctor Who, as Dr. Who, is pretty annoying for this huge fan. I know some people say it doesn't matter, but the show is actually titled DOCTOR Who, NOT Dr. Who. Just sayin.

This book started out so good, I was hooked but then the story just dragged and by just over half way through I was worried there wasn’t enough time left to finish the story and I was right. The last part felt rushed and forced. I’m sorry to say I don’t think I will read this author again.

Wow, wow, wow! This book was so well written! It's the first book by Emma Shortt I have read, and I definitely will read more!

Jack is a millionaire. He is a genius who sold his first company as a teenager. Now, he's deemed a recluse because he doesn't want to be in the spot light. He felt his life wasn't his own and crafted another identity, Chance, who lets him simply be. He has been content with his numbers until recently when he has noticed little "events" happening at his company X-tech. He is determined to find who is behind this fraud. His world spins when he meets Meg.

Meg is sure X-tech has stolen her precious work she has spent half her life crafting. She decides to confront Jack when normal email and phone calls get no results. Who she finds instead is Chance. Their interaction is pivotal! She is disappointed he isn't Jack the CEO she is looking for. Chance is all to happy to let her believe just that! They embark on an investigation into Meg's claims.

Meg and Chance are super hot together! Literally electric, they are just sizzling. But Chance is in the middle of this lie, and her help is paramount to him finding the fraud suspect! When they join forces, it is a whirlwind of a ride that's for sure!

I totally fell for these two geeks! The book grabbed me hook, line, and sinker! The secondary characters added so much depth to the story as well! The subject of computer programming/gaming/coding is so complicated, but the author, Emma Shortt, wrote the story in a way even the most novice of computer geeks can grasp the concepts! Emma did a wonderful job of never making you feel dumb or lost! I know I learned a thing or two along the way! Well done!

So this book had me intrigued when I read the synopsis, I was excited to read something new.
This book was not an easy one for me to get into, the first 40%. There was so much computer jargon going on and so many name changes or nick names. There were so many characters and sub characters it was sort of confusing. Meg “Blue” and Chance aka Jack, were not my favorite in the beginning. I didn’t buy the instant attraction , it seemed a bit too fierced. Chance’s lying and almost getting caught each time was at times annoying, just tell her the truth about who you are. It did pick up in the second half of the book only after they gave in to thier attraction. but the suspicion remained. The basis of this story is about computer nerds and how they feel about themselves then and now. Kate and Meg’s friendship was a nice addition. But I really liked Will, he was such a bright spot..
This is a good book but for me not great.

Emma Shortt is new to me, but I will definitely remedy that. I loved A GAME OF CHANCE. The characters were refreshing, the plot current without being repetitive, and the tech/programming issues were believable. I thought Shortt set an great pace ... overall just a really enjoyable book.

A Game of Chance was my first book by this author and a pretty fun introduction to her writing. It was full of sweet moments with those hints of drama and also some mystery that kept me intrigued.

in a game of chance, meg marshall has a plan, break into x-tech, find jack richards and figure out how someone stole her code. things go haywire when she runs into jack chance, a guy who claims to be a private investigator, looking into the same problems she is.

meg doesn't trust him, but is also ridiculously attracted to him. and somehow finds herself in a ridiculous partnership with a guy she wants to jump but wouldn't trust with anything. she's right not to trust jack chance, since he happens to be jack richards. but he is actually looking into the same things she is. and they do have a marvelous connection.

i'm not sure i understood jack's ethical issues or the problems he and meg were solving but it doesn't matter, the chemistry between the characters is what makes the story here. not the actual plot of what they are doing.

**a game of chance will publish on october 8, 2018. i received an advance reader copy courtesy of netgalley/entangled publishing (indulgence) in exchange for my honest review.
