I booktalked the first two books in this series to middle school students last spring and got all of my department hooked on the story, we've all been waiting with great anticipation for the final installment. The end was so satisfying and stayed so true to the storyline, with hoverderby at the forefront and a massively engrossing world and society as the backdrop. I really hope that Jessica Abel spends more time in this universe or lets others write in it. It's some of the most timely science fiction stories I've ever read.

Jessica Abel has done a great job of world building. The book falls flat though at the amount of characters used. I often couldn't tell who was who or keep a lot of the characters straight, especially the derby girls. And then once people put on helmets, forget it. But I give her a bit of a pass because I like this complex, sci-fi setting of Mars water farmers, derby girls, aliens, and evil corporations. I do think the book wrapped up way too quickly, at the same time raising new questions. It felt like Abel may have been told the book would be ending with issue 3 while she was drawing it, leaving her to scramble to put together an ending. Overall, I enjoyed Trish Trash and would snap up further stories.

An interesting ending to the Trish Trash trilogy [although I missed the first volume unfortunately]. Picks up pretty much where the last one left off with the roller derby and the water shortage problem and the big evil company. It's a cute enough story but overall it's pretty bare-bones and I also had trouble distinguishing some of the characters from each other when they were all in the same place at once. The ending was cute but also felt a little bit rushed and like there maybe should have been some kind of epilogue because nothing is ever actually that easy. Overall a fun read if you like sci-fi, roller derby, and awesome ladies, but I wish the whole thing had been a bit more fleshed out [although like I said, I did skip the first volume so maybe I missed some important ground work].

Trish Trash is a unique story about life on Mars in the distant future. Water is scarce (or is it?), and Arex is the big bad company controlling this natural resource, among other things. Like the roller derby girls. The skaters are what make this story special and set it apart from other sci-fi comics.

Trish Trash is full of great diversity when it comes to characters. The contemporary vibe makes this one easy to relate to. I love that there are LGBT characters, and it isn't "HEY! I'm gay!" It's subtle and sweet, nonchalant. Hanna was presented as the "bitch", but I liked her.

I really like the words that replace curse words. It’s reminiscent of Farscape and Battlestar Gallactica for me. I really appreciate the futuristic setting and language choices. They’re grotting great! I want to be a Marty!

The science and research panels are also really interesting. I feel like those sections might be my favorite. Oh, other than the ones with Qigi. She’s a great character. And the Devin/Trish scenes! Can't forget those.

The cons:
- I think the art throws me off a little bit, because it doesn’t fit what I would consider a “science-fiction” comic, but what do I know? The art isn’t bad at all. I’m just being nitpicky I think.
- My main complaint is with the font. It looks like a kid’s chalkboard font, and I don’t think it matches the style of the comic.
- Marq is a character that I think could be really great, but he’s kind of obnoxious. Is he meant to be?

Although it's slow to get started in the beginning, the comic picks up pretty quickly after about the halfway point. I enjoyed the dynamic between the derby girls and the villainous Arex corporation (and the indigenous species of Mars). The conclusion of this volume was very satisfying, there wasn't an unbearable cliffhanger like you sometimes see in continuous comics. I’ll be tuning in for the next volume!

I'll be honest (as always) and admit I didn't read all this book, for the principal reason that it was part 3 of 3, and I hadn't caught the second. All I needed was confirmation that this was a mixture of teen-friendly sci-fi (people on Mars desperate to farm every drop of water they can), roller-derby (whatever that is) and youthful, social media-inflected drama. Our heroine still has the problem of working or skating to earn her living. I guess the book gains kudos for showing women of all ages in it for themselves, working hard without relying on men. But that "woke" "message" would mean jack without some entertainment, and we seem to have that too. Fingers crossed to ever witness the full trilogy in the omnibus (that's imminent at time of writing)!

Two words: Jessica Abel. Read anything by her while you can when you can. That being said...

Trish Trash is a fun, vividly illustrated, and well-plotted adventure. This third volume is no exception.

Old fans and new readers alike have much to enjoy and appreciate in this bracing and all-out graphic novel.
