This is a non-fiction book with some great photos and facts about hockey. This is a new series similar to the My Favorite Animal series also published by Xist. It is geared to young children (4 to 8) so they can learn about various sports, this one being ice hockey. It is simple with just enough information that it will not overwhelm them. It gives basic rules, equipment and skills. My one issue is the page that says the game only stops when the period ends, a point is scored and after a penalty; there are many other ways that a game is stopped such as an offside, puck going out of play, injury etc. I think this is a great book and series for a school library. It features both boys and girls as well as different ethnicities. There are many young children who do not want to read fiction and this series would definitely give them something to read as they are developing their skills. I am looking forward to seeing what other sports will be featured in this series.
