Closer - K.L. Slater

The books that this author writes are fast paced and very easy to read, I just sometimes wish they were longer (readers greed). This is a slow burn turning into a pretty decent psychological thriller. On saying that I feel that this does need a sequel as we’ve been left with a few unanswered questions, I’ll keep fingers crossed.

Emma and Shaun are a young married couple who have separated but for the sake of their child have stayed living in the family home. Things change when Shaun decides to leave after falling head over heels for Joanne who just so happens to be Emmas boss, as the kids say ‘totes awks’. This obviously strains things between all of their relationships especially when it appears as though Joanne and Piper Joanne’s daughter treat Maisie differently. Piper and Maisie already knew each other from dancing lessons at the same studio and she can’t stand her or her mother, she’s obviously an intuitive wee lassie.

Emma begins to notice that there is something wrong with their daughter but Shaun doesn’t want to listen. Sadly he seems to be completely occupied with Joanne and her daughter Piper who appears to be a proper little madam. I didn’t understand how he couldn’t see the way that they were treating and some of the things that they said to his own daughter. Maisie becomes anxious, withdrawn and begins to lose weight seeming different each time she comes home from her fathers.

My heart totally went out to Maisie she was the most vulnerable wee lassie and I just wanted to give her the biggest cuddle. This book is full of secrets and lies leading us into the worlds of childhood anorexia and bullying. Some folk may take nothing from this other than it's a good book but it may spark a little something in people in their own children.

Read for an honest review. Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture

Finished my holiday with a late night to finish this!
This book kept me gripped from early on. It starts with a flashback and tells the developing story from a variety of POV’s which add to the suspense. The characters were believable and I was emotionally involved trying to sort out the underlying issues. As expected there are twists and turns to keep you reading. The 4 star rating comes from the sudden ending and the many questions I felt were left unresolved. Follow up book?

Always look forward to KL Slater books and I wasn't disappointed. Gripping and compelling, from start to finish. At times, I wondered whether Emma was right or wrong and at the same time, I was on the edge of my seat waiting to find out. The ending is truly chilling! Highly recommended for anyone who loves a good psychological thriller that builds tension and keeps you guessing. And if you already love the author, I'm sure that like me, you'll enjoy it a lot!

Another great psychological thriller by K L Slater. I really enjoyed this book and I was hooked from the first few pages. With a slow build that kept growing and with some great twists and turns throughout made it a very enjoyable read.

I'm a huge fan of KL Slater and having read all of her previous books I couldn't wait to read Closer.
Emma and Shaun are separated but living together in the same house in Nottingham for the sake of their daughter Maisie. Maisie is a happy go lucky little girl until Shaun gets involved with Emma's boss Joanne who has a daughter Piper the same age as Maisie. Piper goes to the same dance studio but Maisie doesn't like her at all as she is spoiled rotten. Shaun moves in with Joanne and then very worryingly for Emma Maisie's personality changes for the worst her little girl becomes depressed and won't eat and Emma sets out to find out what is going on to cause the change in her daughter. Both Joanne and Emma have secrets and this all creates a highly addictive psychological thriller that will keep you hooked the whole way through.

Thank you to Bookouture, KL Slater and NetGalley for the arc of Closer my review is honest and unbiased in any way.

A psychological twister/thriller that is like a train leaving the station. It starts out slow, building up speed until the story is moving so quickly, there is NO way to take a break until you reach the end. What a ride!
Emma lives with her ex-husband Shaun to maintain a family life for their 10yr old daughter, Maisie. Shaun decides to move in with his new girlfriend, who just happens to be Emma's boss. When Emma starts to feel that something is wrong with Maisie, she must battle everyone around her to get help for her daughter. How she works through all of the clues and finally figures out exactly what is happening will keep you fascinated until the end.
I've not read any books by this author before, but I'll remedy that quickly. You should read this book!

I know my daughter better than I know myself and if there’s one thing I know for sure at this moment: it’s that Maisie is not ok.
My ex-husband Shaun and I are still friends.

We would do anything for our beautiful little girl, Maisie.

But now Shaun has moved in with Joanne and suddenly, Maisie has a brand new family.

And there’s something not quite right about it…I know Joanne isn’t everything she says she is. Yet no-one will listen.

I need to discover what she’s hiding.

Because if I don’t, my daughter will be in terrible danger.

The most gripping psychological thriller you’ll read this year from the Kindle top five bestselling author K.L. Slater. If you love The Girl on the Train or Gone Girl, you’ll be absolutely hooked.

Emma and Shaun's marriage is over, but they've decided that to lessen the effects it has on their 10 year old daughter Maisie, they will continue to live together, sharing the workload of running a household and caring for her. It was all working so well, at least, Emma thought so. Until Shaun reveals that he's been seeing someone new for the past couple of weeks, and that he's going to be moving out because the new arrangement is not working for him at all. This rocks Emma's little world and she throws herself into her work, meanwhile, Maisie is not taking it so well. She doesn't like her dad's new girlfriend, or her spoilt brat little princess, and she starts to withdraw. Emma feels like she's going crazy because her mother and Shaun think she's being paranoid as small incidences happen around the house, and Emma starts to notice Maisie's decline. Is Emma just being paranoid? Or is there more going on?

Holy smokes Batman! I was NOT expecting to like this as much as I did. Don't get me wrong, the blurb made it sound pretty interesting, hence me requesting it in the first place, but holy wow shit balls. I literally just spent the entire day reading this off and on to give my eyes a break from my kindle. I started this book this morning and finished it about 45 minutes ago. No word of a lie.

This story is told from alternating perspectives as well as including a few flashback scenes to an unknown character who by the end, we can pretty much guess who it was, though I'm not sure if I've guessed right - I think I have though.

When it starts, Emma comes across as very self absorbed, focused on her career and thinking that everything is dandy fine in her world even though her marriage has ended. The new arrangement is working great, Shaun thinks so too, so everything is mighty fine. Until it's really not. For the first third of the book, I honestly felt nothing but severe dislike for Emma. She came across as a control freak who thought that she was right about absolutely everything, and it really pissed me off. Shaun I felt the same about through the whole book pretty much, he just seemed as though he was enjoyable floating down the river denial, and he pretty much stayed that, so he instantly irritated the absolute hell out of me. I really felt for Maisie's character, the way that Slater was able to describe how this character felt trapped, isolated and alone was just amazing.

This book dealt with a few things I believe. It dealt with the breakup of a marriage and how the parents think they are doing what is best for the children involved, when in reality, they're probably really not, at all. It shows that children, while young, generally pick up on things that you think would go over their heads. They are real beings and they are developed enough that it will completely turn their world upside down if the parents are taking steps in order to 'protect' the child, in reality they're possibly doing more harm than good. It gives us a look at how people can become so absorbed into their own little world that they end up isolating themselves, and don't realise until it's too late. It deals with how impressionable kids can be, yes they are intelligent and can think for themselves, but we need to realise that children are very impressionable, and sometimes the things being said to them, while seeming insignificant to an adult's perspective, can actually be quite breaking for a child. It can really effect them in severe ways and sometimes it's not realised until it's too late. I feel that this story implores us to look outside of ourselves sometimes. Yes, self care is incredibly important, but sometimes one needs to take a step back and look at the whole picture, not just their corner of it.

I also feel like it shed some light on the fears of being a good mother. No one really knows what they're doing when they have a baby, they're all of a sudden thrown together with this screaming bundle of life and they have to muddle their way through it. Every parent has their own way of dealing with different aspects of being a parent, and most will crow from the rooftops that THEIR way is right and all others are wrong. When in fact, it's not always the case. This book showcases two different mothers, both with 10 year old daughters, trying to do their best.

I felt that Slater did a fantastic job of making the reader really feel the emotions of her characters, especially Maisie and Emma. The total feelings of isolation, of having no one to turn to when Emma felt that something bad was about to happen, I felt that shit in my soul. Slater's way of writing believable, and real feeling characters is superb.

I honestly thought Emma was batshit insane for the first third of the book, but then as more things started coming to light, my self assured feelings of being right were filled with so much doubt. Was she really insane? As the book progressed I found myself absolutely glued. To be honest I was hooked from the start. I love a good psychological thriller, but I end up reading them few and far between my other preferred genres, but this one just had me hook, line and sinker from word go.

And that ending........ Wow. I feel like my eyes will now be permanently saucer wide because of how surprised I was at the twists in this. Those last few pages, wow. Some people may not like that we never actually get complete closure, but I feel that the ending being left how it was, leaves us with that sense of unease with not being sure what's going to end up happening. I think it's brilliant to be honest. Am I still left with questions? Yes, yes I am, but you know what, I'm okay that all my questions were not answered, it adds another layer to the story I believe.

I don't normally get sweary in my reviews, but I feel like this one needed it. I'm filled with so many emotions right now, this is my only way to express them.

After this, I'm definitely going to be checking out the back catalogue from this author because WOW. Colour me impressed.

K.L Slater is an author who's books I have come to know I will enjoy, For me this one started out slow, the plot gradually building up to reach a final dramatic few chapters.
Emma knows something is wrong with her daughter and is trying her best to work out what it is. All the while juggling her own marriage and work problems.
This was a great read and I finished it in just a few hours as always I am looking forward to reading more of K.L Slaters work.

I love this author’s books so I was delighted to see that she had a new release – Closer!

I read the book within hours of it landing on my Kindle and I have to say that I thought it was superb!!

I thought that the characters were very good, I loved their development and I was trying to guess how the book would end. There are not too many plot twists but the ones that are there are perfect – the book has a great pace and I found it completely addictive.

For me the plot line was brilliant, I loved the build up to the ending and I did gasp when the book was over – the ending was a cracker and I thoroughly enjoyed the book from cover to cover!!

No hesitation in giving the book 5 stars and really looking forward to seeing what she releases next – this one was excellent!!

CLOSER is bestselling author K.L. Slater's seventh standalone twisted psychological thriller…and definitely another winner!

I know my daughter better than I know myself and if there’s one thing I know for sure at this moment: it's that Maisie is not ok.

Emma and Shaun have called “time” on their marriage, but still live together in Nottingham for the sake of their ten-year-old daughter, Maisie. This new arrangement, is to give each of them equal shares of time with Maisie. But Shaun isn’t pulling his weight, and Emma has work commitments she must handle.

Emma is a paralegal in the legal firm, hired by Joanne Dent to study for her law degree. Shaun is a freelance photographer.

But things get more complicated…Shaun ends up having a relationship and moves in with Emma’s boss, Joanne, a single mother with a daughter, Piper…Maisie’s age. Piper is a spoiled brat that Maisie can’t stand. A nice blended family now!

The story is told from different perspectives with each POV starting each chapter. This makes for steady buildup of tension and allows for development of each of the characters, without confusion. Having read most of her novels, I feel that this novel is her best to date. I thought I had everything figured out…but then everything changes and you are back to square one.

This book had a strong, suspenseful plot that had plenty of twists and turns. The reveal at the end was pretty surprising to me. What I liked about this novel, is that this psychological thriller, had you guessing all along, and the clues were only disclosed on a need-to-know-basis, grabbing my full attention to the very end. I must say I did not suspect the outcome, until the very end. K. L. Slater has the skill to make you look in one direction when she is leading you somewhere else completely. It is definitely a book that I will recommend to anyone who reading psychological thrillers.

Many thanks to Bookouture via NetGalley for my digital copy.

I read this in just two days. A slow burner at first but the latter third was what made this a five star rather than four star for me.
Within the plot K.L.Slater addresses some of the pressures and challenges that youngsters face very well. Thr suspense built up as the end neared was good, and the ending was excellent.

Emma and Shaun’s marriage might be over but they decide to live together for their daughter Maisie’s sake. The living arrangements though don’t last long as Shaun falls in love with Joanna who just happens to be Emma’s boss and above all Joanna has a daughter Piper who bullies Maisie. Seeing her daughter suffer Emma decides to delve deeper in Joanna’s past to uncover her dark secrets

K.L.Slater is soon becoming one of my favorite authors and this book like her others is full of interesting characters , twists and turns which all end in an unpredictable explosive ending . Eagerly awaiting her next book

I would like to thank Bookouture & NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and fair review.
