3.5 stars

This was good, but definitely not my favourite book by Lisa Jewell. I find that Jewell's novels are often a cut above many other psychological thrillers. She writes well and her characters are well developed. Watching You is definitely well written and tense, but I figured out what was happening quite early on and I'm not sure the denouement worked as well for me as in some of Jewell's other books. The story focuses on a group of characters in a small town in England. Joey - aka Josephine - and her new husband are living with Joey's brother and his wife. Joey - and every other woman and teenage girl its seems - is attracted to her neighbour, Tom. Tom, his wife and son have recently moved to the community, where Tom is the new head of the local school. There's a suggestion that of something sinister about Tom. But is there? My favourite characters were Tom's son and another teenage neighbour. Jewell is always strong in her depiction of children and teenagers. I didn't love the adults or ending. But my 3.5 star rating reflects that it was still worth reading. And I'm looking forward to Jewell's next book.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an opportunity to read an advance copy.

I cannot wait for the full version of this to come out! I am super intrigued by the first few chapters - I cannot wait to read the rest to find out what Joey had to do with the murder - if anything!

Note; review for only first 4 chapters per the ARC I received.

Let’s start with the prose. The author is a first timer for me. She has talent, while I couldn’t keep focus because of her writing style.

It’s not for everyone.

It’s told from different 3rd person POV. Which I’m not a huge fan of unless it’s executed to my liking.

This one was okay.

It has several different parts (im assuming from the excerpt.) it’s set in the Uk. And told from a teenagers eye. There are police interviews.

Which can be termed original.

The book was a tad slow, at least the part I got to read. Maybe if I had been able to read more, I’d have a different opinion.

All in all. It was okay. Not great. Not bad. But middle road for me.

I would read another book from this author depending on the premise.

I received this ARC for a honest review. Thanks to the publisher, author and Netgalley.

This is a review for the whole book, not just the excerpt.

Watching You is the newest standalone suspense thriller by UK author Lisa Jewell.

I really like suspense thrillers and have enjoyed the previous books that I have read by this author.

This book has multiple 3rd person POVs. The main ones are 15 year old Freddie, 15 year old Jenna, and 26 year old Joey (female).

This book is set in the UK. The book is divided into four parts. It starts with a diary entry from 1996 and then moves to March 24th 2017. Part one starts in January 2017 and gradually goes forward until we get back to March 24th 2017.

I definitely struggled with the beginning of this book. The book centers around the new headmaster of the local high school, Tom Fitzwilliam. Freddie is his son. Jenna is a student at his school. And Joey is his (Tom's) new neighbor.

All of the POVs were interesting enough. However, I did find it odd that two of the POVs were from 15 year olds. Both Freddie and Jenna's moms were quite interesting. But the back and forth in narrators made me feel like there were just too many narrators.

The book is interspersed with parts of recorded interviews with the police. I enjoyed this part a lot and wish that had been more of the story. Someone has died or was murdered and I sort of wish that we would have just found out who was dead and had the police solve the case.

I really like the title as there are multiple characters who watch people.

Overall, this book just started too slowly for me. The story was good. But it took a long time for me to become really invested in the book. And I did guess the guilty party. The most interesting thing about this book was the crazy twist on the last page. I think that a lot of people will go crazy for the ending. Although I also suspect that a lot of readers will be confused. I had to think about that last page. But once I realized what I read I thought that part of the story was fantastic.

*this review is from chapters 1-4 provided by NetGalley and Atria Books*

The opening scene is an investigation of a murder then quickly shifts to the daughter of the victim, Joey. Joey has returned home with the man she just married, Alfie. Alfie does a lot of different jobs, but none of them well. Joey’s brother offers them a place to stay in his home until they are settled. It’s not long until Joey catches a glimpse of the neighbor, Tom Fitzwilliam and is fascinated by this striking man that seems to have the perfect life and perfect wife. One day Joey is looking out her window to Tom’s house and notices movement and the curtain is pulled back. Attention voyeurs: this is your next favorite read. I can feel the suspense start to build as I ask myself if he is also watching her. The end.

This is the first I’ve read from Lisa Jewell and if the first few chapters of the book is an indication of how the rest of the book will play out then I’m all in. The excerpt is short and left me wondering about the murder and how it ties in. It is enough of a taste of Lisa Jewell’s writing that I’m hooked and I know I need to read the rest!

Let me tell you how fantastic this book is.... while I knew that this was only an excerpt, after just a few chapters I was so enthralled, I had forgotten all about that!! Imagine my disappointment when I realized my time was up and I had to wait a few more months to see what happened! I immediately pre-ordered it because I had to know what happens! I think this book is thriller that is best read without pretense so I don't want to spoil the plot. All I can say is I think this is some of Lisa Jewell's finest work!

I really like excerpts. After four chapters you can tell if the book goes on the to-be-read list. And this excerpt definitely makes me look forward to reading the whole book! I like the characters and the storyline is compelling.

I had just finished ""Then She Was Gone" by Lisa Jewell and my mind was still spinning. I have read most of Her books and they all have grabbed my hand and pulled me along ,staying up half the night deeply engrossed in the carecters. This excerpt of "Watching You" was great, leaving you wanting more!! Wanting to know what happens between Joey and her new husband Alfie, and her hot desire for her neighbor Tom, a Headmaster at a school Tom is a much older man that is also married. Is she watching him? What about her brother Jack and his wife Rebecca? Will they find out about her feelings for Tom and still let her, and her new husband Alfie, stay in their Victorian Villas guest house? From the opening page, when a bloody tassel, and then a body, is found in the kitchen at the Bristol Harbour Hotel....what does it have to do with Josephine Mullen and Tom Fitzwilliams the headmaster? BTW love the cover!
Thank You #Netgalley for the excerpt of this book to review.

What a tease! After reading the first 4 chapters of this book, I went and put this book on hold at my library! Can't wait to see where this goes! I've loved all of Lisa Jewell's books thus far and I know this will be no different!

You have to love a book that starts right off with a dead body. What a way to get your attention. We move on to Joey a twenty something that is newly married and moving back home after her mothers death. She and her husband move in with her brother and his wife. Then she sees the neighbor ..... and she watches him. I'm curious. Is someone watching Joey? Who is the dead body? Thrillers are my favorite genre! And as a side note, I love the cover. It would get my attention in the store.

I'm a fan of Lisa Jewell's books already so I was psyched to see this one. This excerpt intrigued me. I'm interested in reading more about Joey and Tom and how their story ties in with the murder from the beginning.

Lisa is a an excellent writer and really enjoy the way she tells a story... She is one of my favorites and this one did not disappoint. The only disappointment was it was only a taste and I wanted more...

OOOOOhhh 4 chapters is just a teaser, having read them, I need to read the rest, what is up with the character Joey and her fixations, seems to jump in feet first without engaging her brain and the consequences!!! Will definitely be buying this one!

Many thanks to Netgalley & Atria Books for the teaser in exchange for my honest opinion.
