Forgetting the Scot by Jennifer Trethewey is book Three in the The Highlanders of Balforss Series. This is the story of Virginia Whitebridge and Magnus Sinclair. I have read the previous books, but feel you can make this a standalone book if you wish to do so.
Virginia is married to a man that is abusive and has taken most everything from her. Virginia ends up being kidnapped and sold to pirates but later is saved. Virginia meets Magnus who falls in love with her pretty fast but Virginia has plans to face her husband to get the money back he has taken from her. Magnus is taken back to learn she is married but he goes forward to follow her to help her and keep her safe.
This has a few trigger issues that some may not like or want to read but for me I totally enjoyed their story.

Virginia is in a loveless and abusive marriage. Her father sold her to this man for a title and her husband only wants her for her money.
Deciding that having her killed is the best road to his own happiness her husband hires a supposed assassin who has his own agenda and sells her to slavers who intend her for a brothel or a harem.
She is in the company of other women intended for the same.
Rescued from their fate by the Highlander Magnus Sinclair.
Scotland is not where she needs or wants to be but it is a dangerous road back to England and does she really want to leave her heart behind in the Highlands?

I have read this entire series and although they are each standalone titles they do have characters in common that tie them together.
I gave this book 4.4 of 5.0 stars for storyline and characterization.and a mild sensual rating of 3 of 5 flames. This story stands on it's own without need for heated scenes.

Jennifer Tretheway takes us on another amazing adventure, with her strong characters and wonderful prose. First the title told me that our Heroine could never forget the Scot, I mean why would you! Virginia finds herself in a terrible marriage to a man who had only wanted her money. Unexpectedly she is taken in broad daylight and ends up a ship with several other women! But as luck or in this case fate would have it, she is rescued by a Clan of Scottish men and she meets Magnus.
The two have a strong attraction, but of course she needs to go back to England to claim what is hers that her husband stolen. Magnus is determined to go with her and be her protector but England is the last place he wants to go.
This story is fast paced and the plot will have you guessing and afraid to take a breath. Action, suspense, passion and love is woven together with great secondary characters that will take you to the end. Cannot wait for the next book by this talented author.

This book was SUPERB! One of the best historical romances I have ever read! It is part of a series BUT can be a stand alone as well! The author blew away my expectations and threw in so many surprises that I gave up trying to predict what would happen! The sparks were phenomenal between the two characters and when Magnus follows her to London, I just about melted with his unconscious decision to follow his heart. I was blown over by the mastery of this story and the chemistry present that I wanted an epilogue of the epilogue! I will definitely be reading all of Jennifer's previous novels! I cannot express how much to read this! It was perfection!

This novel is very interesting, well-written, and quite romantic. I loved it and would recommend to all historical romance fans.
Lady Virginia was abducted by someone and sold to a pirate. She was fearing the worst when luckily she was rescued by brave Scot men, along with other women who had also been abducting from their homes. Her companions and she spent some time in Scottland. Enjoying the hospitality of their rescuers. While everyone else was happy to return to their families, Virginia dreaded it. She didn't want to go back to her husband. He was abusive and she feared he might be behind her abduction. Her life would never be the same that much was for sure, but she hoped that things turned out for the best.
Magnus couldn't help but fall in love with Virginia. She was beautiful, intelligent, and everything a man could desire. Unfortunately, she was also married. But when he learned about the wrong-doings of her husband he hoped that she would choose him. But nothing in life is ever that simple as that. One thing is for sure though, he would protect her and do everything in his power to keep her safe.

This is the third story in the Highlanders of Balforss series and has many characters in common with the earlier stories but it is written as a standalone and is a fantastic regency romance. It does contain events which could be triggers for some people, so avoid it if reading about abusive relationships, kidnapping or adultery upset you.

Vicountess Langley, Virginia Whitebridge, has had enough of her abusive marriage but the law gives her husband her inheritance - well, all except the significant trust fund her father set up for her. When she discovers he has also taken that, she’s determined to get it back. However, as she leaves her solicitor’s offices she is kidnapped and loaded onto a pirate ship. This is the start of a tedious, frightening sea journey around Britain, a journey she doesn’t expect to escape from. However, fate has other plans when the Sinclairs come to rescue another of the captives, freeing all those incarcerated on the ship. This leads to her reconnecting with someone she attended school with and meeting the Highlanders of Balforss….. including Magnus, who helped in her rescue and is determined to protect her. As the attraction between the two flares even hotter, she is still set on returning to reclaim her fortune and Magnus plans to go, too, even though two people have foreseen this leading to his death . . . .

This is a steamy, hot, historical romance with plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. The writing flows well and the characters are robustly developed. Magnus is a brilliant character, a strong, determined man who is loyal and faithful, the epitome of the Highland hero! If you enjoy historical romances with handsome Highlanders rushing to the rescue and finding love, you’ll probably thoroughly enjoy this story - but I have warned you of possible triggers! I'm really looking forward to reading 'Bull's' story!

Oh I do love a good Highlander, I mean a good Highland Story. In this we have quite a few factors, The English, a title, abusive husband, kidnapping, pirate ship, and magic.

I won't bore you with the synopsis, just know that this is exciting and such a page turner you will find it very, very hard to put down.

‘Forgetting the Scot’, the third book in the Highlanders of Balforss series, follows Virginia Whitebridge who cannot forget Magnus Sinclair, the highlander who saved her from a kidnapping attempt. Virginia and several young women find themselves aboard a ship, only to be saved by a group of Highlanders. She finds refuge with their extended family and hopes to escape her husband, whom she believes organised to have her killed for her inheritance. Magnus finds himself falling for Virginia, only to discover she is married but when he discovers the abusive nature of her husband, he does all that he can to protect her.
This was a beautiful romance with several great characters. The story is rich in detail and the emotions of Virginia and Magnus are so on display, that you become quickly immersed in this fast-paced storyline. This is my first book by Jennifer Trethewey so I am keen to discover more in the series. Her ability to tell a story with interwoven characters, was so natural that I didn’t feel at all lost. However, it does mean that I get to read two more books whilst I wait for the next in this series. I particularly loved the character of Bulford, who I hope will appear in another story!

Great slow building story. A woman afraid of her past and a man wanting to be her future. Will she be able to trust him?

There is a lot of suspense, danger, and fear. She is married to a sadistic and evil man. He steals her money, tries to kill her twice and has her abducted and sold. She is rescued by the Sinclairs, who are trying to rescue Caya. But they release all five of the ladies and they get a ship because the old crew is dead. Magnus Sinclair is very tall, handsome and very strong. They took the ladies to Balforss Estate, and they had been treated extremely well. Virginia and Magnus had started falling in love there.
The storyline was great and the characters were so warm and funny. The plot was interesting, and there were many twists and turns in the story. It was well written and moved smoothly. I loved when she played with the baby Jemma and it was touching watching her. She so wanted children but had been told she was barren. I found it a lovely tale and highly recommend it for older readers.

The attraction is immediate and sizzling hot!

Yet, Virginia is not being honest and hiding her true identity. Unfortunately an acquaintance from her past is there. Lucy went to school with her in England, now in Scotland and married to Alex Sinclair! As Lucy Sinclair once was very much infatuated with Virginia's husband. Lucy can't figure out why she hasn't written to her husband, to tell of her misfortunate abduction and rescue. He must be so worried she thought shouldn't he be?

Virginia has asked Lucy not to tell anyone of her marriage or royal title. Claiming her husband ßwould lose all acceptance by the ton. That is if they found out his wife was on a ship full of pirates for three months! Yet really Virginia is scared for her life and needs to investigate and find out if her husband was behind her abduction.

The chemistry is hot and heavy, even though Virginia has been married for three years-Magnus gives Virginia her first kiss ever! Yet the guilt spills in and she confesses her marriage. Not only that but her title as an English Viscountess. Something that is way too high for farmer, Magnus Sinclair, which leaves him devastated and broken hearted.

She is like the fragile China his mum warned him off as a child. He can look, but not touch, but boy oh boy, did he want to touch! Then his cousin Declan who has a mysterious power in his dreams. Again Jennifer Trethewey blows me away with her golden pen and her superbly storytelling visions and talent. Another book that will touch your soul and melt your heart. An awe inspiring book that is absolutely unforgettable! It exactly the the type of book that historical romance readers will love.

Beautiful settings, magnificent dialogue, dashing hero and a stunning heroine. Also secondary characters that are absolutely brilliant! However the plotting is so exhilarating, that it will have readers holding their breath with anticipation, not knowing what could possibly happen next! This book is a fast quick paced, action packed, page turning, riveting romantic adventure. It is filled with abduction, abuse, treachery, murder, betrayal, lies, deception, mayhem, trust, faith, protection, respect, passion and love.

A book historical romance readers don’t want to miss. As it is a phenomenal story from prologue to epilogue that will stay with you long after you have finished. A definite shelf keeper that readers will want to reread again and again. Jennifer Trethewey is one of those talented authors that knows exactly how to bring readers into her stories and never letting go. It’s a rare quality that only very gifted authors have!

This is the third book, in the (Highlanders of Balforss) series which is absolutely phenomenal. It was a total delight to read. I could not put it down!

I can’t recommend “Forgetting the Scot” by Jennifer Trethewey enough! As all the books in the The Highlanders of Balforss series you can read them each as stand alone books too.

This is the second book in the series but stands on its own. We met Virginia & Magnus briefly in the first book. I thoroughly enjoyed the vast majority of the book but did find it hard to comprehend why on earth Virginia insisted on returning to England to have her money returned. A married woman even a member of the aristocracy had no legal standing & when she marries all her worldly goods became her husbands unless he deems it otherwise so she had a snowballs chance in hell of getting her money back. I realise that the return to England was part of the bigger picture but it just niggled. Otherwise the story flowed well, the characters were well fleshed. I loved Magnus & I certainly wouldn’t have left him! Virginia was a strong woman to have suffered abuse, been held captive & wanted to fight for orphans. I liked the humour in the story & found myself riveted & read the book in under a day

Thinking she was a single young woman he tried to woo her until she finally told him she was really married and still had a husband, a husband she suspected of trying to murder her. Magnus has the worst luck he’s fallen for a woman he can't have, Virginia is rich and titled and above all English and well above his station in life. His brother has predicted the death omen attached to a married woman, but Magnus vows to keep her safe as he has to follow her to the one place he hates England. A great story with intrigue, adventure and romance to make a perfect read you can’t put down until the HEA ending!!! Now she has decided that she has to go back to England despite the dangers, to reclaim what belongs to her. Even though it means leaving her heart in Scotland with the one man who has championed her through it all.

Magnus Sinclair has the worst luck he has fallen for a woman he can't have. Virginia is rich and titled and above all English. So to keep her safe he has to follow her to the one place he hates England. Where the boring, preening London Society has it's own rules. Rules that he doesn't abide by.

Despite omens from a fortune teller and dreams from a fellow highlander stating that nothing, but death awaits him in England Magnus has vowed to help Virginia and restore her fortune no matter the costs.

Jennifer Trethewey writes a fabulous tale of love, death, anger, and happiness. There were so many twists and turns in this book I was never sure what was going to come next. I was amazed at the talent that this author has and will definitely read more of her books.

Let me start this review with a PSA - this book contains several triggers - in the form of abuse and adultery. It is well written, but some of the content may be upsetting to some readers.

Virginia, Viscountess Langley is in a very unhappy marriage. Her husband was charming and attentive until the wedding and then his true colors began to show. He married her for her dowry and once he had it, he was cruel and abusive. Virginia has had enough, enough physical, mental and emotional abuse. Her greatest desire is to have children to love, convinced that she will never be able to have a child, she has turned her heart towards the forgotten children of London. She has a plan, she will use the trust fund her father set up for her and build a home for these children, she will live separately from Lord Langley and devote her life to orphans.


She is livid when she learns that Langley has stolen her money and plans to confront him, but everything changes when she is abducted after leaving the solicitors office. She is sold to the pirate O'Malley and held on his ship for months. She is sure all is lost when a miracle happens - they are rescued!

Magnus Sinclair never believed in love at first sight, until he saw Virginia. He saves her from certain death and wants nothing more than to always protect her. They form a bond and he believes that she is the "one". But then the truth comes out - Virginia is married. Magnus is heartbroken, but he can't seem to let her go. No one and nothing will keep him from her. Even the threat of his death. He will help her return to London and reclaim her fortune and ensure that her husband can never hurt her again - even if he dies in the process.

When things come to a head in London and Virginia is freed, Magnus has hope that they will have a HEA - But Virginia has her own dreams and as much as she wants Magnus, she will not forsake her dream for him or ask him to forsake his for her. A HEA for these two seems impossible, but a twist of fate may change everything.

I loved this book until about the 60% mark, up until then, I couldn't read it fast enough, but then it hit a wall for me - in the form of adultery - I know her husband was a scumbag, I know he abused her and broke his vows, but that doesn't change the fact that she committed adultery - this is a deal breaker for me - they shared kisses before this and while I wasn't overly thrilled with that, I could let it go, but when they moved past kisses to an intimate relationship, I was upset and disgusted. But, I made a conscious decision to ignore my personal bias and be fair and open minded for the rest of the story. But once they got to London the story just fell apart in my opinion. Virginia just made one bad decision after another and several improbable/unbelievable things transpired. By the end of the book, I wanted Magnus to walk away and find another woman to love. Honestly, even without the adultery, I would have wanted him to wash his hands of her - she was so incredibly set on her path that she refused to even consider compromising - I just felt like she didn't love Magnus as much as he loved her and hurt him over and over again.

This book was well written and flowed nicely, but in my opinion, the story fell apart after they got to London. I liked that this book tied all the books together, I liked revisiting characters from the previous books, I loved Lucy's brother George, I LOVED Magnus and my heart broke for Virginia. But in the end, I felt that this was a 3 star read. The first half of this book was a easily a 5 star read, but the second half was barely 2 stars, there were so many questionable legal issues and consequences that were wrapped up too quickly and easily to be convincing and the possible legal ramifications of her pregnancy were completely ignored. If you have read the other books in this series, I would recommend this book, but caution that there are "triggers" in this book. If you haven't read the other books, I would recommend starting with Tying the Scot and deciding for yourself.

This is the story of Virginia, trapped in an abusive, loveless marriage to a cruel viscount who tries to have her killed. She is rescued by brawny highlander Magnus and his family and remains with them for quite awhile as she attempts to determine what to do next since her husband has reported her dead and claimed the insurance policy he had on her life.

I enjoyed this book, really I did, but I almost dropped the rating another star and probably would have if it weren't for the humorous bits. It has everything I'm a sucker for: a strong and caring hero, great secondary characters, a bit of intrigue, and plenty of steam. My main hang-up was the heroine. And not for the infidelity issues you might think. (I believe that any man who abuses his wife has broken his vows and she is not obligated to show him any loyalty after that). However, Virginia couldn't just leave well enough alone; she kept insisting she had to return to England to reclaim the inheritance he stole, though she had to know she'd never get that money back, and create a home for orphans. While this is a great and noble cause, it drove me crazy that she was willing to leave Magnus and break his heart despite him literally begging her to go with him. She believed he didn't love her enough because he wouldn't live in a city he hated for her and was offended that he'd ask her to give up her dream of the children's home in London. This just struck me as highly hypocritical because she was perfectly happy to ask him to and expect that he give up his dream for her. She finally comes to her senses and realizes, with more convincing from Magnus, that she can open a foundling home in Scotland with him, as there is just as much need there and we finally get our happy ending.

Given the experiences she had at the hands of her father and her first husband, I also found the heroine's continued naivete to be a bit tiresome and unbelievable and it just made me dislike her a bit. Magnus was a great hero, but him constantly having to be vulnerable and yet still being rejected by Virginia was a bit irritating. He was surprisingly lacking in self-confidence and I kept expecting Virginia to do more to improve that. Some parts of the story lagged a bit and could possibly be improved as far as flow is concerned, but overall I still enjoyed this book and would recommend it to others.
