I had a great time reading Monica Adventures #1. This group of friends went on plenty of crazy adventures together in their attempt to get enough money to hang later. The lengths they went to achieve this were pretty impressive. Even when things looked to not be going their way, they never gave up or lost hope. In the end, everything worked out just fine and did a wonderful job bringing this story to a close. I can’t say this graphic novel will be for everyone but I think most readers will enjoy it.

This book, meant for teens is horrific. The images are way too salacious and have insanely unrealistic body proportions. The language is disrespectful and nothing I would want to hear coming from a child of mind. And the attitudes are selfish, immature and materialistic. Skip this book and skip this whole franchise.

Stereotypical situations and poor comic storytelling make for a boring book. The artist seems more interest in drawing cute girls than keeping the visual flow going. The faces are too young-looking, which makes the bathing suit scenes, with the well-built characters, disturbing. They're attempting to serve the market Archie Comics used to address, I think, but even less happens in these books than in those lightweight comics, and the plotting is too jumpy to easily follow. A disappointment I recommend avoiding.

This is the first adventure of Monica and her friends J-Five, Smudge, and Maggy. Now the that school year has begun Monica is nostalgic for the fun times the friends had tigether over the summer. They work on raising money for an outing together, and after a few setbacks, they are able to get together in the end.

I wasn’t able to connect with this story. This is a group of teenagers but they often acted as if they were much younger. Monica decides they all need to get odd jobs to raise money for a summer rental, but somehow the plans are changed to going to a movie as a group. The novel was done in black and white, similar to comic books, I just wasn’t expecting that. This would be best for a pre-teen audience but there is something missing in translation so I’m not sure how well they would follow.

Special thanks to Netgalley for my complimentary copy in return for my honest opinion.

I did not care for this book. The characters were annoying and the girls were too perfect in body. I wouldn't hand this to a teen. Their world, even with the money "problems" is too perfect.
