A thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed the pacing of The Reader. It moves fast because a huge majority is exposition in the guise of dialogue. The main character, Ann, has lost her memory, but the people who find her enlighten her that she is a Reader, someone who can read the minds of other people, just not other readers. They hope she might be The Lost One, a Reader who actually can read the minds of readers and will find her soul-mate among four who are destined.

While the dialogue makes the story go very quickly, like I said, exposition in its guise. Everything about the world and the way this paranormal Reader power works, their history--everything is told through dialogue by one of the characters to Ann. We hardly get her internal thoughts and there is very little in traditional exposition in detailing setting, but it's still easy enough to paint a picture of the facility and the characters in my head. Or maybe I'm just making them look how I want them to? :)

The ease of reading is enough to have me interested in book two, but so is the cover of book two. The covers themselves are rather aesthetically pleasing as well.

As the reader (not the character, but you who reads the book) gets acquainted with the world through the first half of the book, the second half is more action-filled, but still chock full of explanations through the use of dialogue. There are a number of scenes and ideas that could have been expanded upon. Originally being a stand-alone piece, there are too many questions and a lackluster climax left with the reader. But since there is actually a sequel, perhaps these ideas will be explored further. The end was a bit predictable because of Ann's visions, and even slightly off-putting because it happened so quickly, a place that could have been approached in a different way or extended.

All in all, an enjoyable, quick read that has me interested in future installments, a book I'd recommend to teens.

I decided to read this book for two reasons:

1. I had just finished a lovely book that was a storytelling masterpiece

2. I love, love, love YA as a genre

This book starts off with a confused action sequence. Our main character has no idea who she is, where she is, or really anything about anything. As a plot device it is used well and the amnesia is explained later in the story. I really hate unexplained amnesia so the explanation came as a relief.

The love triangle reminded me of The Vampire Diaries, which is apt because I actually forgot who one of the main characters was in the last third of the book and thought for a good twenty reading minutes that it was a new character. Now this could because I wasn’t paying attention but I prefer to think that they were not acting like themselves, which is why I struggled to recognise them. Tells me characterization is good!

I raced through the story, read in one go. And enjoyed it. There was a good balance of world building, character development and action. Sometimes I thought the soul mates connection idea could have been even further developed. But I did really enjoy the book.

Rather than move to the next book on my to read list I downloaded the next book in the series. Now I hate, hate, hate getting to the end of a story and needing to read on for a satisfying conclusion. This is NOT one of those series. Yes I wouldn’t recommend starting with the second book, you do need the first book to get it, but you don’t need to read the second book if you are happy with how this book ends.

I’m confident in giving this book a 4/5. This is probably as high a rating as I have given a sci fi/fantasy YA in a very long time. And I suspect it will be a while before I find the next book with this high a rating.

I recieved a gratis copy from the publisher through netgalley.

I really wanted to like this book but the writing was tiresome and I didn't like the characters much.
This book wasn't for me but maybe others will like it more.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book - it had me booked from the first page and I loved Ann! It has the right amount of romance to fit in nicely with the plot and was really unique and creative. I loved this and can't wait to read it again!

The premise of this book grabbed my attention right away and I was excited to be approved for this title. The book's basis is that it is dealing with highly evolved humans who can read minds. Ann is the main character and pretty easy to relate to. The book itself is full of plot twists, lies and betrayal. It is definitely an enjoyable book and while I was able to guess a few things that were coming it did not take away from the plot itself. The ending is very well done but I won't lie and say that I hope there will be more books after this.

It took me some time to find a proper analogy to start this review. Not that it was hard but I just didn't want to be misunderstood. Now after all that imagine that you go to a restaurant for the first time and you order a dish that you have never had before and you absolutely love it, so you decide to check out all the varieties of this dish in different restaurants. After couples of years you have tasted hundreds of versions of this meal and nothing surprises you anymore until... A new restaurant opens up. So for that exciting rush you go there to see if you can be surprised one more time only to find out that the dish was simply predictable and after a first bite it just tasted the same as other ones. You knew what to expect and what the outcome would be. Lovely but after all these years that flavor just became boring to you. That's what this book was for me.

There used to be three groups of supernatural people, Seers, Readers and Jacks. Thousands years ago a war ended the existence of future seeing Seers and since then Readers, whose ability was reading others minds, were living in hiding, waiting for The Lost One, supernatural human that blood was mixed between the three races, that was prophesied to end the war so the Readers could come out of hiding and live their normal lives again. Would the years of research of The Lost One would finally be over?

I was very excited to read this book, especially after reading other readers reviews, so I was very happy once my request to NetGalley was accepted and a copy of this book landed on my kindle. It started as an exciting journey and finished with struggles and boredom. I felt like I've read this story before and with each page I knew what was going to happen. Obvious actions of the characters made this read just predictable and cliche. Of course there was a love triangle, of course she has chosen the one that she didn't like in the beginning, of course there was a treason from the other one. Obsession, killings and friendships- all of these were just a natural sense of being and there was nothing that would surprise the reader.

I like the way this story was executed- writing was really good and everything was explained in detail. I loved that the heroine had no memory, therefore everything had to be put into words and reader was learning alongside Ann. This made it an easy read and I wasn't lost at all - sometimes when authors have a vision of the world they're trying to introduce in the book and they don't use the proper structure or words and I find myself lost or just simply uninterested in a book at all. This wasn't a case here- I actually found this idea re-freshening and original- it's just the character's actions were to be expected.

I don't think I will be reaching for a second book in this series. I fell like whatever author wanted to say has already been said and I just don't think I could spend another hour on reading the same story all over again. This book was a one time read- I don't regret my time, however I wouldn't spend any more of it. I kind of feel sorry that such a beautiful writing didn't have more original plot. I hope this will change in the future as I see a great potential in the author.

Thank you NetGalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Very good story. The plot twist threw me for a loop. I loved the characters. They were very well developed. To wake up and not remember your life or who you are, has to be very hard. Yet Ann handled it. With all the information she obtains, she finds that even with her memory gone, the information she is finding is way out there indeed.
The writing style is very honed.

I really enjoyed this book. It was fast paced with me reading it in two sittings. I liked the premise of Readers and Jacks and found it interesting to see Ann piercing together her story and finding her destiny. I am looking forward to seeing where the story goes next.

I began this book with no knowledge of the book. It was actually nice not knowing. I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait for the next one!

The premise is fantastic and the writing flows nicely. Personally, the storyline and romance felt rushed but that’s probably due to the short page count.

3.5-3.75 Stars

The good: I loved the storyline and the characters. I don’t think I have ever read a story like this and really appreciated the originality of the plot. All of the characters were very relatable.

The bad: I felt like the ending was rushed. I felt like some of the character development could have been more detailed.

All in all, I would definitely read more books about this world.

I was provided this book for free from net galley in exchange for my honest opinion.

This book can be summarized in four words: great idea, poor execution.
A conflict that spans millennia? Check. Soulmates? Check. Three superior races who have lurked by humanity for centuries? Check. All the ingredients to make a good book. Alas, this is not the case.
Overwhelming whiteness and straightness (the MC can be the soulmate of 4 different people? I was hoping for a poly romance! But no) are among the faults in this book: the plot and the characters are poorly developed, the MC suffers from a mild case of "not like the other girls", the male supporting character seem to have sprouted from an Abercrombie catalogue.

I really enjoyed this book, it was a nice easy read, and even though it was really obvious how things would end, it still answered questions I didn't even realize I had!! It also set up rather nicely for a sequel which I have already downloaded!!

The Reader was a definite favorite of mine this fall season. The book starts off with a woman found on a beach, badly injured, without memory of who she is or how she came on the beach. She is taken by two men to a compound where her life and the dire situation of Readers is made known to her slowly, but in tantalizing drips throughout the book. Ann's particular situation is even more sacred as she is assumed to be the "Lost One" of her kind. Devon and Archer play a central role in her survival and foretold future. Both Devon and Archer have secrets that are left untold until the very end. The characters were fantastic! The story was unique! I cannot wait to read the sequel to this book!

I received an ebook copy of this book via NetGalley for an honest review.

To be quite honest, I had forgotten the premise of the book when I finally had the chance to read it. And I think that made my experience reading it that more enjoyable! It gripped me from the start and I couldn't put it down and I would've finished it one go if it weren't for adulting. Such a bummer.

The whole idea of there being a superhuman race in the world was such an interesting concept. Plus there being Jacks who are the cause of all that's bad in the world would explain so much even in our world today. Wish we could do what was done in this book.

I think the only negative thing about this would be that I wish it had been longer. I feel the end was a tiny bit rushed. I still enjoyed it tremendously, though. Can't wait to get my hands on the sequel!

A girl with amnesia, two gorgeous guys vying for her attention, a secret compound and the fate of an entire society resting on her shoulders. That's the premise that sucked me into this PNR novel.

It's a quick read with twists and turns and many reveals. I can't help but wish the characters and the plot were given more time to develop. I was interested but not connected. Still, it was a captivating plot that kept me guessing until the end.
