The story is about a girl who wakes up with no memory of who she is to find herself being shot at and then rescued by to guys she doesn't know and isn't sure she should trust but since the only option is the people shooting at her she goes with them. At their compound she learns about three ancient races, one that is now extinct and the other two that are at war. She learns about the prophesy of one who can end the war, one way or another. Is she that one?
I really liked the story but thought that it was too hurried, especially the romance (though they do try to explain that). I think that they could have even made a second book out of it if they had slowed down and really explored the world and the romance more. But still thought it was a really good book, just would have liked more.

The Reader was, I have to be honest, a heard booked to get into. The characters from the getgo were cliche and I felt like I had seen them all before. (mysterious girl nobody knows about, good looking guys you know will end up in an awkward love triangle etc.) I unfortunatly did not finish this but I am sure this would appeal to a person who is just venturing into the YA conmunity.

Received a copy of this from Netgalley. This book was okay. It was every single trope and predictability rolled into one (very short) novel. It read a bit like amateurish fan fiction in most places because it was stilted and clunky - especially the language at the beginning, it wasn’t naturalistic to speech at all. There was also so many inconsistencies, mostly little things like the main character asking questions about stuff that had already been said as if it was brand new info and I don’t know if I just misread, but I’m pretty sure she was described as a brunette in the beginning but in the shop she’s called a bimbo? I don’t know. I also disliked that the synopsis made it sound kind of good, fast-paced, punchy and packed with heat...but in reality it wasn’t any of those things. Also disliked large plot-dumps that was regularly interspersed. Overall, it was a meh read.

This was an enjoyable quick read. As a light read the book gripped me just enough, however I must admit the plot was very predictable.

I liked the way the story was built around the main character starting with when she woke up on the beach without her memory. The setting was great and the background was set just enough to allow comprehension throughout the book. I liked the idea of the Readers, Jacks and Seers as an evolved/mutated human species.

I’m not really a fan of instaloves and this one was no exception as I saw it in the first meeting, however I appreciated the way it was tied into the story. The one thing I really disliked was the ending, it was rushed, the anticipated war from the prophecy really fell flat for me.

Thanks to NetGalley for the chance to read this book in return for an honest review.

The Reader by MK Harkins is a young adult fantasy novel along similar veins to the Terraway Series by Mary E Twomey.

Ann is found on a beach and quickly rescued by two men and taken to a compound. I won't say too much more due to spoilers but I absolutely loved this book. The only downfall would be that it was far too short and I would have loved it to have been padded out and extended into a trilogy.

I certainly hope this writer writes more books around this idea!!!!

5/5 for me!!!

In a Nutshell: Super powers, heroes vs villains, action...

The Reader revolves around a hidden society of people who have a war brewing between them for centuries and the one who can tip the scales is unaware of herself; thrust into the world of super natural abilities and a man hunt, our MC has to balance reality, destiny & past while the inevitable sets in,

This by second time reading The Reader (Last year I was approved of its previous edition), this time round I actually came to love this book. After finishing , I wanted to venture more of this world and the characters. (And the sequel is fortunately out so YAY!)
The premise was intriguing from the start but the world building was more solid this time round. I got to know the characters and watch them flesh out as chapter passed out, especially Devon my heart reached out to him! Our MC is quirky, with a strong mind set and not hapless, I adored her even more in this edition.
I wanted more involvement of a certain mean character, I felt it would've been a fun match to watch.

Now to the cons:
I adored this installment it kept me hooked till the end, however what felt a bit a jarring were how the chapters ended, it felt like it broke mid scene and I felt slightly confused every time we moved to a new chapter.
Secondly the story seemed to concentrate on just the few characters around her while her ‘close friends’ were brought up every now and then for convenience.

Overall A remarkable series start, it has a little bit of everything a YA reader is in search of!

Thank you M.K. Harkins, Victory Editing NetGalley Co-Op & Netgalley for the opportunity to review this e-Arc.

I had no idea what this book was about and I believe it was better that way. It was original, weird (in a good way) and so addictive. There wasn’t any messing around and we got thrown into the thick of it pretty much right away. I loved the mystery at the beginning about who Devon and Archer were and I loved how not everything was revealed all at once.

I clicked with Ann right away. Sometimes, I feel like characters who discover they are part of a new world can be whiny and annoying but I didn’t feel like that with Ann. Devon and Archer were also great -I loved the differences between them - one being a little meaner and tougher acting, whereas the other one was chilled and funny.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book - I got a stuck about halfway through so the last parts of the book i felt like I was dragging myself though. However, I stuck around because it was fun, original and had brilliant characters. I will definitely check out any other works the author brings out!

*I received this book from NetGalley in return for an honest review*

Reading the synopsis I found myself drawn to the premise of this book. It seemed like something I would enjoy. I read this book over a day as it is very short, which in my opinion is one of the leading reasons that I did not enjoy this book. There was no time for any kind of significant character development, it felt very rushed and although I do enjoy some tropes, this seemed like a very cookie-cutter type of book with many tropes like the 'chosen one 'and a love triangle playing a very big role. Some of the choices the characters made were or seemed disingenuous and the main character herself was not likable and I just did not care about her. The premise of this book was really something I could get into and would be interesting if it had been developed in the right way, but the writing itself was not for me.

I absolutely devoured this book. From the first word to the last, I could not stop reading.
Everything about The Reader was perfect! The characters, the conflict, the twist.
The author crafted a believable world for the Readers to live in. I could picture the compound clearly while reading.
Ann kicked butt as the protagonist. Even with no memory, she was whiny or weak. She could have absolutely crumbled multiple times in this story but she kept on going. Getting stronger and more sure of herself with each page you can’t help but root for her.
Devon made me want to smack him a little bit. But by the end of the story I loved him like I love Ann.

Do yourself a favor and read this book. You won’t be sorry!

Imagine a world where there are different classes of people: the Readers, the Jacks, and the Seers. The novel opens with Ann waking up injured in an unknown place without any memories. Suddenly, she is saved by two boys who keep talking about police and Jacks. Can Ann figure out what happened to her and who she is? Will Readers or Jacks prevail?

I really like this concept, but I feel like it could have been fleshed out more. The story was good, but everything seemed rushed. The romance aspect was a huge part of the plot, and yet it seemed entirely superficial. I think I just wanted all the events and characters to be a little more developed. I was surprised with the twists at the end, but this would have been more impressive if I felt like I knew the characters well enough by that point for the surprise to be justified.

I would just like to say it takes a lot to entrance me as well as this book did.

It took me less than 2 days to read the whole thing - not because it was short, but because I was so hooked on it I couldn't stop reading it. The entire book was phenomenal - the story was great, intricate, and well thought out. The entire world had been created, every aspect thought of with no plot holes (that I have thought of, at least). The romance isn't too over the top, and blended well with the story. The main character is believable and very human in their actions, yet not dumb either. The ending wrapped up exactly the way you would want a story to end - tied up with a nice little bow. If there were a sequel (aside from The Jack, since I was never really very fond of that character in the first place as a person, I don't particularly want to read a story about them) I would read it in a heartbeat. I would recommend this book series to anyone.

I came into this not having any idea what the book was about and just so curious. I loved this book. I am so glad that I started reading it with a fresh slate. Ann was such a strong amazing young lady that found herself in a strange place without any memories and an injury that she had no idea how she got it. This was an entertaining, fun, and fast paced booked that got better with each page. I am so exited to read the next book in the series. Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to write about this book after I read it.

I was curious to read this book when I saw the cover and read the description and it turned out that my feeling had not fooled me: this is really a great book. I liked how close the reader is to the protagonist Ann and how you can really understand her feelings and decisions. I also enjoyed reading about all the other characters and the exciting science fiction/fantasy story featuring seers, jacks and readers. Besides that, the love story was also very nice-written and I enjoyed it. I can defintely recommend this book!

The Reader

When I first saw this book, I tried to look for a description. I tried to read other people's review on it, but they all said that it was best you start with no description. After receiving the book, I could see why. I loved how the main character and I were receiving new information at the same time. It was almost as if I could really understand her. This book had an excellent mixture of drama, action, fantasy, and romance. I highly recommend this book for teenagers and young adults. No major sexual references. No major violence. Trust me. You will LOVE this book.

I started this book without reading the synopsis or reviews and I really had no idea where it was going to go. That is unusual for me but it was kind of fun. Turns out “the reader” is a mind reader not the bibliophile that I was expecting. Hahah

I loved the world of the reader and their underground city sounds like a little slice of paradise. This story is part sci-fi, part love triangle, part world war... a little bit of everything for everyone. The novel was short and mostly focused on world building and meeting all the important characters; the actual plot/end of the story came in and went in what felt like one chapter. Overall very interesting and I did like the main characters I just wish I didn’t finish it in a few hours.....

I really enjoyed this book, until about 70%, I saw that coming and it annoyed me that Ann fell for it. Lol
And I also found the ending a bit of a let down,
But I did enjoy the book and I may read the second book.

Once I got past 'main character doesn't know what's going on and no one will tell her' this was a quick, simple read. I liked the setup of the world, I figured out one twist well ahead of time and another only a page or two before it happened, and I'll be looking out for the next book to see what happens next, since there's only one very minor thread to carry over. A simple, fun read.

Receiving an ARC did not affect my review in any way.

I wasn't sure what to expect with this book. The cover looked intriguing. There wasn't much of a description to go off of, but I decided to read it anyways.
Once I started reading I couldn't put the book down. M.K. Hawkins did a really good job of keeping the reader in the dark with what was going on and giving just enough information to drive the storyline.
I look forward to reading more books by this author.

I absolutely adored this book. I loved the setting, the pacing, the characters. All of it was well crafted and kept me engaged the entire time I was reading it. I read it all in a day because I couldn't put it down! Ann is a compelling Main Character and the side characters are just as intriguing.

Would love to read more from this world! an absolute 5/5 for me!
