I could not get into this book. There were so many characters and so much going on, it was impossible for me to keep it all together and actually enjoy it. I gave it a couple shots, but could not finish. If I do get into it later, will update my Review.
Will be using in a challenge and letting Chapter Chatter Pub know it’s out

With thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the book in exchange for an honest review.
This was an excellent storyline and with a really good twist at the end. I would like to read more about Phillipa Adams in future and the rest of the police team. They were all very entertaining.
Highly recommended.

A gripping crime novel full of character with secrets. All is never as it seems and with some digging the truth will be uncovered. Enjoyable but I found it hard to connect to any of the characters.

I was lucky enough to get a copy of this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book had a really strong opener. A wife has been brutally beaten and tied to a chair in her living room - the police suddenly break into her home following the discovery of her murdered husband. From this point you're quickly introduced to the main character - a troubled young police officer who is dealing with her own troubled past - which remains a mystery for the entire book! So much so that I found trying to find out if this was a follow on book because you never find out what her troubled past actually entails!

While this book was good - it wasn't mindblowing. The writing flowed well, the characters were difficult to gel with or even like... yet the plot was clever. I liked following the story of the murdered husband.. a 'good' teacher who wasn't all that good in reality. The plot twists unfolding were all really clever and well written.

There were a few characters introduced who were of no benefit to the story AT ALL (I'm looking at you, Stepmother!) and the ending was all tied up- in regard to the actual murder mystery that is, however the fact that the main police lady had a mysterious troubled past is what peaked my interest more, but there was no reveal, no more back story.. no inkling of what was to come.. so that let it down massively for me.

A good concept yet had a lot missing.

I have never heard of this author before but I am glad I have. I absolutely loved this book and the authors writing style.

3.5

Good premise and characters. Pippa is a interesting one, she has many layers. The story focuses on its characters and their relationships. The mystery reveal is something I seem to be running across lately so I wasn’t all that surprised but overall it was still an enjoyable read.

Thanks to NetGalley, the author and Harper Impulse and Killer Reads.

The Good Teacher by Rachel Sargeant was a fairly easy read. I loved the way facts and the truth is trickled to you throughout the story so that you keep second guessing what you think the ending is going to be.

I loved this book and would definitely recommend this book!

Thanks to NetGalley and Harpers Impulse for this ARC.

The story was instantly intriguing, but something was off for me with the writing and plotting.
I felt disconnected to the characters and lost interest in what was happening with the murder mystery, amidst the police station drama.
While it was somewhat interesting to see a young woman rise up through the detective ranks, her inner-voice was way too obnoxious for me; the MC seemed to always be blushing, doubting herself, or remembering a mysterious, violent past experience. The men that surround her in the precinct are pretty terrible and stereotypically dickheads.
I didn’t really understand the characters (like the randomly placed stepmother) or their motivations.

This one didn’t work for me, but others may enjoy seeing the MC try to prove herself as a detective and the *twist* at the end.

I do like a good psychological thriller but don’t often real crime novels like this one, but I liked the sound of the plot. It was amazing! So gripping and compelling that I read it over a weekend.

Pippa is new to CID, and has a lot to learn, but a natural instinct for detective work. She has to get used to the banter, and often sexism, from the other detectives, but you can see her grow in confidence over the course of the novel. I really liked her as a character and found her back story very interesting. She’s a multi-layered character, and I really hope we’ll have more books featuring her in the future, as I feel there’s more to discover about her.

The plot is perfectly paced, revealing a little at a time. I had a few theories as to who the murderer was along the way, but it wasn’t what I expected in the end.

Well plotted, excellent characters and an unexpected twist at the end make for a very engrossing read.

As an avid crime reader, I found this book to be somewhat predictable and lackluster. I disliked the teacher enough that when it came down to it I could care less about who killed him. The main cop wasn’t any better.

Despite knowing from the title that this one wasn't likely to be about an award winning excellent teacher, I still didn't quite see where this book was going until the end. A teacher is found brutally murdered, his pregnant wife tied up in their home. Although he seems to be a wonderful teacher that everyone loves, it is clear that he's definitely gotten on somebody's bad side. Lots of twists and turns to keep you guessing.

New detective Pippa Adams is thrilled to catch a murder investigation her first week on the job, but things are not as they seem in this excellent, fast paced thriller. Carl Brock is a respected teacher who works with children who are the hardest to reach, when he is found brutally murdered Pippa must try to piece together what exactly happened. Was Carl a pilar of the community or a really horrible person. As this story unravels to the surprise ending, it is impossible to put down. As a side note I would love to see Pippa show up in more books, she is an excellent, endearing character. Addictive thriller that will keep you hooked until the last page.

I really enjoyed this book! It was quite engaging, kept me super interested, and was hard to stop reading. I was extremely surprised by the ending, which is always a great sign for a thriller! I especially liked the main character, Pippa. I found her very relatable and I’m intrigued to know more about her—would live to see her as a character again! I highly recommend this!

The first day in a new job is always a little intimidating but being thrust into the middle of a kidnap and murder case is quite some introduction for new detective Pippa Adams. It's up to Pippa and her colleagues to investigate why local school teacher Carl Brock was targeted and murdered when everyone they speak to thinks so highly of him.

Pippa was an interesting character who was determined to do whatever she could to fit in. She'd already made a crucial career decision to put her love of dancing behind her to join the police force, and now she's made the move from being a beat copper to become a detective and wants to prove herself good at her job. She will do whatever it takes to fit in and has already toned down her upper class accent, and refused her mothers attempts to approach family acquaintances who are her superiors. But despite all that she still finds herself tongue-tied and prone to saying the wrong thing at the wrong time much to the amusement of partner Sergeant Mike Matthews who nicknames her 'Christie' after a comment about Agatha Christie.

Much like an Agatha Christie novel, The Good Teacher, is definitely more of a whodunnit case rather than a gritty police procedural although the opening chapter certainly packed a punch in setting the scene. The rest of the book follows Pippa, Mike and their team as they start to investigate the victim himself to figure out who he really was, and what he had got himself involved in that led to his eventual death. But with so many people proving reluctant to talk, the answers will take a little digging deep into the backgrounds of the people they meet during the course of the investigation before they get to the truth. The investigations will certainly throw up a few surprises. some more obvious to the reader than others, until they get to the real motive behind the case.

The Good Teacher was a great introduction to the writing of Rachel Sargeant as despite buying a copy of her previous book, The Perfect Neighbours, it's one of the many books I've bought that I still haven't managed to find the time to read. Having published both a psychological thriller and now a crime novel, I'll be interested to see what direction her writing takes us next.

Plot and characters are ok,
Not a bad book overall
Thank you to both NetGalley and Harper Impulse for my eARC of this book for my honest unbiased review

I’d like to thank HarperImpulse & Killer Reads and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘The Good Teacher’ by Rachel Sargeant in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

Reg Kenny is on his customary early morning cycle ride when he comes across the body of Carl Brock who’s been stabbed and left in a ditch at Martle Top. When the police arrive at Brock’s home to tell his wife, they find her bruised and chained to a chair in the lounge. DC Pippa Adams is stationed at Penbury Police Headquarters and is working with DS Matthews to find out who committed these crimes.

When I started reading ‘The Good Teacher’ it felt as if it had been written a while ago and I wasn’t wrong; it was Rachel Sargeant’s debut novel in 2010 that had been updated and re-published. I thoroughly enjoyed her previous novel but, oh dear, this was such a disappointment. The characters were flat and lifeless, the detective inspector rude and overbearing, and although the plot was interesting, the whole novel was uninspiring and the conclusion unexciting. I wanted to like this novel and kept reading in the hope that I would, but I’m really sorry I found little in it to enjoy.

Excellent book! Loved the characters and it was a great storyline. I would highly recommend this book.

I enjoyed the plot of this story, and it moved at a fair pace. The main players were fairly well developed and reasonable relatable. However the book was rather choppy, character point of views randomly changed mid chapter which made it difficult to know whos view point you were currently in. There were also a few to many main player, not enough to be confusing but enough that it took away from how well a reader gets to know a character. The story had suspenseful twists and turns and a good twist at the end. I also found that the main detective very often had something "niggle at her thoughts" or something she couldn't quite grasp. It happened to often to be realistic and you didnt get any insight or even a clue that they would be resolved until literally the last paragraph. Overall it was an average book.
