An extremely detailed world and writing but to the point of difficulty getting immersed in the plot. I would still give The Priory of the Orange Tree another chance with the full novel in the hopes of getting into the groove of the writing and plot.

Even though dragons and high fantasy aren't usually my thing, the beginning of this book was so carefully crafted that it made me want to read the rest of the story. From the very first paragraphs, you can tell how complex the world-building is going to be. The pacing is slow but it never feels like it's dragging, and the writing is very pleasant.

Even in fragment form, perhaps one of the best fantasy stories I've ever read. Like, ever. Stop everything, read the whole book. It's worth it.

This book is extraordinary. One of a kind. I've been folliwing Samantha Shannon's work since the very beginning and she has improved her craft tremendously. She introduces this new world and characters bit by bit and it never feels rushed. I fell in love with the characters (Ead!) and I can't wait to read more of this world. Bravo, Samantha!

I was so excited for this one, but all the exposition! Jeez. A very slow beginning and I didn't connect to any characters. Won't be checking this one out in the future.

Dragons are my favourite fantasy creatures and I loved The Bone Season so this was an instant buy for me,The world is very interesting, and I already like the characters. I can't wait to read the whole book.

This preview is dense. There is a lot here in the small snippet of this almost 900-page book. We meet several key players in the story, are given a few crash courses in the history and politics of the nations represented in the story, and enough mystery/intrigue about why these nations are at odds. I'm intrigued enough to buy the book.

Anyone who is familiar with epic fantasy stories should read this book; and, fans of fantasy and speculative fiction should not be daunted by the size of the book, but know that the story within it contains a world with rich characters whose lives are about to become interconnected for reasons lost to their histories. Not only will readers be satisfied with the narration up to the end, but also feel a sense of accomplishment for completing this amazing and adventurous fantasy story. Readers will find the time and a way to read this book as I did.

I thought this excerpt provided a good taste of the world and characters, and what is to come in the rest of the book. The worldbuilding was nicely paced through the excerpt, and I found myself enticed with the story, even without having read the rest of the book just yet. I look forward to reading more from Samantha Shannon.

Enticing fantasy world with a fresh take on the dragon mythology...took a while to finish. A book to be savoured slowly.
